How do you capture DTS from a LaserDisc?
Time

Hopefully someone comes by who will walk you through it step-by-step, but the basic process is you use a sound card that can capture bit-perfect SPDIF, use a recording program that also doesn't resample to record a WAV file, and then run that through BeSplit.

I've done it with AC3 before but never owned a DTS LD myself.

How to capture HDCP-encrypted HDMI sources (Vudu, Netflix, Directv, Virgin Media, etc.)
Time

I haven't been following that thread. One poster said "Okay, follow up to my previous post - I am a huge idiot."

I won't start to believe any claims of "updates" unless someone comes forward who CANNOT capture HDCP through the splitter to their BM device but CAN capture non-HDCP sources through the splitter to their BM device.

Maybe such a post is in there somewhere; I haven't read through the whole thing.

First make sure the PC has a free PCIe slot.

HDMI 1x2 splitter that strips HDCP + Blackmagic Design DeckLink Mini Recorder = $161, not factoring in shipping

Like everything under the $400 range, this card maxes out at 1080i60. To get 1080p60 you would have to sacrifice multichannel sound, unless you massively expand your budget.

Which is the BM device you mentioned in your February article.... one and only but expensive ?

I suppose I should update the thread. They now make a relatively inexpensive card ($145) that does 1080p23.976 and 1080i59.94 with 8-channel LPCM, but it only has HDMI and SDI inputs; no analog.

Decklink Mini Recorder.

I need to buy the best HDCP stripper, suitable for Desktop, able to capture both encrypted and non-encrypted sources (both analog and digital).

I don't have a clue what you're talking about at this point, since there is no such thing as HDMI or HDCP in the analog realm. There are other copy protection schemes there.

I guess I'm just confused. The files themselves would fill a dual-layer DVD, but that's somewhere between ten and fifteen hours of material [my mental math skills are failing me].

He was talking about burning a data disc.

The larger x264 encodes of the The Little Mermaid series from Cinemagic HD in the UK are unfortunately cut, due to their broadcast regulations against flashing imagery.

Airings on HD channels are just upscaled.

At 4K you are looking at about 20TB per film, minimum, the storage alone, even at the end of 1995 when prices dropped to $300 per GB it would have cost around 6 million dollars to store a single 4K scan of the film, and the computers of the time would really not been able to handle it.

Snow White was restored in 4K in 1993. I believe the Cineon system relied heavily on tape storage.

Didn't someone point out that the only reason the Averaging trick works is that you're essentially creating a new composite conversion each time you play back from your component source? They said something about phase or inversion that went over my head.

Trying to do the same trick with an LD would be like averaging YCS-100 capture 1 with VP-100 capture 1; they won't cancel out.

So, any checkerboarding on althor's full cap of SW JSC? I couldn't find any. Of course there is some rainbowing here and there on noisy parts of the picture and very small moving details, but I see that even moreso with my Panasonic captures.

I decided to buy a Toshiba DVD recorder to check out the filtering, but the D-KR4SU that I got just has a 2D comb filter with plenty of rainbows and dot crawl.

The manuals for the D-R1 and D-R2 note 3D Y/C Separation, but it looks like the feature was removed from the D-R4/D-KR4 onwards! (Unsure about D-R3.)
