yeh that sounds about right although i know there are a few more things but i just can't remember off hand what the hell they were. lol

Except for the PURIST changes, which I just assumed, the others were the lists you made the day of the releases.

A few weeks ago you posted a new Vader voice. Did you change his voice for the DVD-9 and PURIST?

I think to help get us back on topic, we should make a list of the changes between the XVID vs DVD-5 vs DVD-9 vs PURIST. I think I made a partial list for fanedits.com, but I for one am curious as to what exactly was changed back in PURIST.

My partial list between the XVID and DVD-5 is:

- Removed the ILM crew member from the droid sale
- Removed the wire and batteries seen up Luke's sleeve in Ben's hut
- Removed the remaining wires from Ben's sleeve during the sabre fight
- Ponda Baba's arm swapped for Dr. Evazan' s arm & hand
- Slight tweak to the TIE approach. The background & camera is no longer static at the beginning & a new Death Star surface
- Fixed the gunport shot during the TIE battle where the gun remains static when Han swings the chair and the gun can clearly be seen over the top of the chair instead of behind it
- Typos in the credits fixed

DVD-5 and DVD-9:

- Replaced "fixed shot" where gun was added to the Death Star Control Room to prevent a continuity error and erased a gun from the following shot. Now there are three guns on the rack after our heroes leave the droids behind.
- Remixed Vader's voice even further to match the rest of the trilogy(?)

DVD-9 and PURIST:

Changes from the full version:
- Changed 3PO's line back to "There'll be no excape for the princess this time"
- Re-edited Obi-Wan's Hut scene back to its original version
- Removed the extended Death Star reveal
- Removed the extended TIE Fighter reveal
- Removed all music not originally found in the film

That sound about right?

I prefer torrents over Usenet just to irritate people. :-)

That's only partially true, actually. I had bad experiences years ago trying to use the binary groups -- maybe it's changed since then but back in the day it was rare when I could find all the parts of a given set. It was always 18 of 22 parts or whatever, and I almost never managed to actually download anything. Soured me on the whole idea, so I'm reluctant to try again. Give me one click to deal with, I don't mind waiting. Plus I only download one or two items of this size a year, if that, so I'm not into paying for it. To each his own, of course.

But any opportunity to watch an Internet subculture gnash its collective teeth, I'm there. ;-)

I'm with Ron. I can either pay a couple bucks and get it right now, or I can use my bandwidth to help others get it and just be patient.

I got the DVD-5 in one afternoon through torrents. Not saying its the only way to go, but it worked for me that one time. PURIST took a couple days last week, and I'm still getting the DVD-9 because poor -1 is the only seeder. It'll start flying (relatively) when there's more than one (tomorrow sometime, if my estimates are correct).

No, the ramp is BEING LOWERED, it is not touching the ground yet. It hangs from the hydraulic pistons. Just watch the scene ;)

NOW I remember. Sorry. Makes sense. Don't know how it could be fixed, but back to my original observation of "good eye."

Is there any way to delete most of that whole conversation? I feel silly...

I forgot about the shuttle scene being dumped.

As for the first point, it is not bending, it's just squishing down. It lowers noticeably on each Han's step.

In that case, I think it might be deliberate, because the ground feels strange, doesn't feel like rock.

To contribute something after a long time. Two minor things:

- inside the asteroid creature, when they are lowering the Falcon door, as Han is descending it, the door lowers significantly on his each step. It's a detail but looks odd, like a spaceship door cannot handle a person's weight. It makes a metal hydraulic ramp look like it was made of plastic.

- the ramp of the Vader's shuttle bends like a thin wooden plank as Vader descends it at the end of the movie. Again a detail, but it just looks bad.

No worries about the second one since it'll be gone, but good eye on the first one! Unless its supposed to be squishing into the interior of the slug. I don't recall, is it bending, or just squishing down?

Onto ANHR, any additional FX work will jump out as new and different to fans who have seen the film numerous times. Casual observers would most likely not notice anything that seems out of place. As a whole, the new edit flows and blends seamlessly between the original work and the enhancements. With all the garbage mattes phased out, new additions don't look like they don't belong. There's a certain polish to the whole product that makes it look like all elements are from the same time period. This can't be said of the official SE's as so many little things were left alone and broken to an extent, causing the new, pristine FX work to stick out.

This is why I'm afraid to show it to my wife. I mean, she likes Star Wars, but without the commentary track, I don't think she'll notice any changes and think I'm crazy for downloading the torrent for the last several days and buying DL DVDs to put them on. I'm going to have to go with the commentary track, thank Ady for that.

Speaking of "Ady", I've always pronounced it at "add-ee-wan" but since its short for Adrian and you're British, I guess its pronounced more like "a-d-one"...

Ady, I appreciate how level-headed you are about all this. It seems so many people around here, myself included, can get so thickheaded about changing things back or ignoring the PT. I'm glad that the guy who did such an amazing edit of ANH also has so much respect for the other movies.

But enough about that, back to ESB.

I like the idea of trying to get "Luke" from Ian on that extra DVD. I also think that well placed static would do nicely to cover any edits. It'll be interesting to see how its done in the end.

OK, utorrent says the download is at 0.1%, after quite a while of waiting even for that. AND, the "ETA" is shifting between "1w 2d" and "2w 1d", and I can't help but fear that w=week and d=day...

No one could upload it to rapidshare...?

EDIT: OK, now it says about 10h (hours, I'm sure). Still a bit too long to leave my computer on for, seeing as how I have to go to sleep sometime tonight!

I've been downloading it off and on since it came on the torrents. Several days ago. You're just going to have to stick with it. And it is on Rapidshare, just not in one huge file. But that's a different kettle of fish altogether.

I would actually like to see a more elaborate reveal of the Death Star II in ROTJ to give it a bigger sense of scale. I don't know how this would be possible, but it's one of the things that I think could be done better in the film

This just came to me: Beginning of RotJ, after the crawl, the camera pans down to the curve of a gray planet with the Executor in the distance. The camera switches to one closer to the Executor as a shuttle flies toward camera (the shot I mocked up a few days ago). The camera pans or switches angles to reveal the shuttle flying towards the massive DSII, taking up much more of the frame than the original shot.

I think they never really show in RotJ that the DSII is huge, maybe you should never be able to see the whole thing in a frame, just pieces of it, never getting the whole picture of what it looks like.

Ady, out of curiosity, why do you think it doesn't work? And what further were you planning on doing to it to complete the effects?

Personally, I see no reason why it doesn't work and any reason it doesn't look finished. But perhaps your insight would change my mind.

adywan said:

I have to say i wouldn't want another version of my edit appearing any time soon on newsgroups especially one with that scene in the movie. That scene was omitted from the final edit for a reason and that is because it doesn't work and the effects were never finished.

Ady said when it come about that he wouldn't put it in because it doesn't fit in with the "voices crying out in terror and were suddenly silenced."

I think its nice to have as a deleted scene, but talk about taking you out of the movie, especially if you were watching them in release order. "Who's that guy, and what the heck is that thing?!"

Is it bad that I never noticed the color problems with any of the movies until I saw the first Revisited screenshots? It seems inexcusable to have destroyed the color in this way. I was thinking earlier that maybe its a good thing that they didn't remaster the OOT, or you might not have a color guide at all. Everything might be blue!

The Bespin Betrayal plot line is resolved in Han not "accidentally" shooting Lando in the Sarlacc.

Which reminds me of another ROTJ change that Ady could make. In this scene, the original lines of dialog were:
Han - Don't move, Lando!
Lando - No, wait! I thought you were blind!
Han - It's all right. Trust me!
Lando - A little higher! Just a little higher!

In the SEs, Han's second line was changed to "It's all right, I can see a lot better!", which was shoehorned in and always sounded "rushed" to me. IMHO, the original line harkens to the "resolving the Bespin betrayal" concept, and flows a lot better. (I'm not a knee-jerk Lucas hater, but this is one of the few SE/2004 changes that totally baffled me.) It seems to me that Ady could restore the original dialog easily, as the background music during that sequence hasn't changed.

I kind of like both lines. I wish we could have it be:

Han - Don't move, Lando!
Lando - No, wait! I thought you were blind!
Han - It's all right. I can see a lot better!
Lando - A little higher! Just a little higher!
Han - Trust me!

But I doubt it would work.

doubleofive - Another nice mock-up back there, giving a taste of what Adywan may give us where the shuttle is concerned. Thanks for these.

Thanks IF. I wish I could do more, but I lack the GOUT to pull elements from the original versions for my mock-ups. I'd love to do the mock-up for my "windows closing on Cloud City" idea, but I'd need the original window/wall. Does anyone have the GOUT that is willing to take screenshots for me?

Hey Ady did you ever plan on changing the stormtroopers laser blasts to blue like in the prequels? Or do you just plan on changing the prequels to match the OT?

I personally don't have a problem with the clones having blue blasts and everyone else having red. I don't really have a justification why except that the blue looks really awesome. Besides, it would be really hard/impossible to change the clone blasts to red, with the hundreds of thousands of blasts during the Battle of Geonosis alone, especially when the dust flies up and the air is lit bright blue as the troops continue to shoot through the dust...

Sorry, I love those shots for some reason.

Anyway, I'm sure Adywan never really considered changing the stormtroopers' blasts to blue, since that would be bringing the prequels into the OT, which he tries to avoid. I'm not sure how we can justify that with an "in universe" explanation, but I'm sure George didn't have a reason other than the Battle of Geonosis would be really confusing if they were all shooting red at one another.

And blue is awesome.

This is my first edit I've been "involved" with from the ground up, and I just think its incredible how much freedom fan editors truly have. I mean think about it. We can have Boba Fett removed from RotJ. A few months ago I wouldn't have known that was possible.

I agree with Savage, I wish we could all meet in person and have a committee (of which Leia would have no part in). Even when we disagree here on the boards, I think we handle it pretty well. Each of us has our own opinions and experiences with the Saga. Some have grown up with the OOT, some appreciate the prequels more than others. I wish we all lived close or even in the same country...

Enough gushing, back to the issue at hand. Like I said, I never considered the fact that instead of fixing the way Boba dies, we can remove him altogether. The more I think about it, the more I like the idea. Just keep him confined to be awesome in ESB, and not let RotJ ruin it by making him one of the Three Stooges. He doesn't have any lines and he has nothing to do with the plot (except letting Han accidentally get revenge). The Bespin Betrayal plot line is resolved in Han not "accidentally" shooting Lando in the Sarlacc.

I actually cringed looking at the 2004 DVD screenshot. Cringed, I tell ya!

So the excuse is that the blue looks more modern, right? Have I just failed to notice that all movies made in the last few years have a strange blue hue to every shot?

It's not just Empire either. When I was going through the movies looking for R2's translation screen, the shot in ESB is pretty good color-wise, but the shot in RotJ is of a definite blue shade.
