As Luke goes deeper into the cave, we can see that there is a stone arch there, like this is an old abandoned temple or something. There's probably some EU explanation for this, but for just a movie purist, it's a little confusing. Would you consider doing something about the arch?

Maybe remove it so that it looks like a natural cave?

Or maybe use the arch element to create a wider shot that shows us a hall with lots of arches? (kind of like the wider angle you gave us when Luke and Leia swing across the chasm)

The second option wouldn't really solve the confusion issue, but it would at least make it look like this is an "intentional mystery" and not some random set piece that got reused because they were cheap.

I seem to remember two EU explanations for the cave. One was that a Dark Jedi was defeated in the cave and somehow his death tainted the place towards the Dark Side. Another was that the tree itself, being a living thing and therefore having the Force, was Darksided. Yoda used the Dark Side energies to negate his Light Side aura so that he remained undetectable through the Force. Nothing about a temple being there, according to the Wookieepedia.

I just noticed the arch my last viewing of ESB, and I like either of Erik's suggestions.

That's wonderful Adywan. Thank you for accounting for my bad memory and inability to think about one thing while watching another.

Looks good :) I'm not to positive about the sound effect at 0.29 when the shot switches to clouds, that sound effect is really WHAM in your face.. a little TOO wham if you ask me

Also, the image from 0.55 seems to be pretty bad on the left hand side, snowy white with a lot of dark .. euhh. bleeding ? you know when you see it :)

comments posted, back to reality

you are a god :)

I don't think the sound is too bad, and I don't see the image quality problem either. What's the timecode on the video, instead of just the second count on your media player?

2 MINUTE PREVIEW CLIP -XVID- rapidshare

Looking good! Besides the color issues and new/brighter stars, I didn't notice much different, but I'm the kind of guy that needs to see things side by side to really see the differences (hence my suggestion of the Visual Comparison for ANHR). I get all excited about things that I think are differences just to find that they aren't different at all. For example, the movement of Hoth as the probe heads towards it. Has it always been like that?

I did notice that there's no more human arm attacking the Taun-taun, that's nice. I also liked that I think you turned down the wind as the Wampa is dragging Luke away. I always thought elements at that point sounded too much like 3PO's movement sound, which made the Wampa kind of sound like a droid.

I was sad to see no Taun-taun footprints and no activity inside Echo base as Han is entering, but I hope those are part of the "TEMP" too.

Just encoding it now. should be here in about 20 mins

I love that "a few months off" turned into "let me do the first color correction pass real quick" to "it took me 3 days, 9 layers and 123 masks to do this one Yoda scene" to "I'm just going to start to matte the transparency issues" to "here's the first two minutes."

I freaking love it.

You gotta read between the lines.

When the Falcon gets to Bespin, security won't let them land at first. Then when they do land, Lando is late in getting out to the platform.

Fett probably got there literally just a few minutes before. Security refusing to let them land was a delay tactic, and Lando not making it out to the platform in time was because Fett (and possibly Vader) were pulling rank on him.

Wow. I never thought about it like that.

doubleofive- I know that there is some 'debris' on the gantry in that 'birds-eye view' shot, but I certainly don't recall there being an obvious deactivated Lightsaber on it. I will check this out later today though.

If its not there then Ady can just put it there. I've always been OK with assuming it was there, so if it actually is, all the better!

I added an addendum to the end of yesterday's 'missing Lightsaber' post Ady. :)

I thought his lightsaber already was in the bird's eye shot. I was going to check last night, but I was distracted by Luke being so quiet that I could barely hear him in some "lost scene".

I just realized something. In the Official Site's "What Has Changed?" comparison between 2004 and GOUT it has many dozens of "Such-and-such has been digitally recomposited." Wouldn't that mean that they had access to all of the elements back when they were doing the 97 SE at the very least? If so why couldn't they fix all of the transparency issues back then? Why do them so half-assed if they had to go back to the base elements anyway?

I know all of these questions have no answers, but I wish they would open up the archives to Ady to allow him to take the time to matte out all of the elements properly. Heck, give him access the original background plates too. Let this one man take the time and his own money to do what Lucas would not do.

Jeez, I'm getting all fired up!

A question for you guys... I was watching the DVD9 the other day on my LG DVD player/recorder

Funny you mention this, because my LG DVD Recorder (LG LRA-850)
ironically doesn't play DVD-R's correctly, only commercially-made DVDs and anything I record using it. I haven't tried the DVD-9 in it because I figure it wouldn't work anyway since nothing I've ever burned works in it. I don't use it for anything but recording anyway, so it's not an issue.

A DVD recorder that doesn't play recorded DVDs? That is ironic. How do they get away with that?

I forgot to say that I was testing the DVD-9 and had my wife (a moderate Star Wars fan) sit down and watch the extended Alderaan Destruction Sequence. She saw bits and pieces of the XVID version, but hasn't seen the whole thing yet.

I asked her "You want to see the coolest thing that's not in the movie?"

She was like "Sure", kind of rolling her eyes.

I think I heard her gasp, and afterwards she said "That was awesome! Why didn't he put that in?!"

"Because it takes away from the pacing--" "So?!" "And Obi-Wan said they cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced."

"Who cares what Obi-Wan says?! That was so cool!"

And this from a girl who doesn't mind Jar Jar.

I'm still fine with it being right where it is, just letting you know how cool it is. I expected the shorter version you put online a while back, so I was blown away when I first saw the "final" version too.
