That is so cool, 005! I just wish I knew when it was on. They don't mark it as Star Trek Remastered on my channel guide. I've only seen the new effects once while casually browsing.

Yeah, my DVR labels it as a repeat of Star Trek. It's usually on late Saturday nights and is the first thing preempted when anything happens. It's usually syndicated to CW's or MyNetworkTV's depending on where you live. In the US, now that I think about it. Not sure of foreign showings.

I know it seems like blasphemy to mention it here, but this weekend's episode of Star Trek: The Original Series: Remastered is "The Cloud Minders", where the Enterprise visits a city in the clouds. TrekMovie.com posted a preview image that looks very familiar.

There is so much attention to detail in this, as each building perfectly matches the original painting:

I wish we could get CBS-D to help us with Revisited...

Ady has a big enough workload with this project alone, without getting side tracked about talk of two or three other projects on from here, that he may, or may not even be bothered to do in the end.

Just help him to focus on making the best he can do with what hes got.

Whoa, scrub that comment. Sounds like you may NOT have enough work to be getting on with at this pace!

How about a possible release date then ;-)

Darth Solo wins the prize for being the first to ask for a release date! Let's hear it for him!

I think we've talked about the "sith eyes" before and decided it was a bad idea. I think that if Sith get crazy eyes when they do evil things, why don't Jedi get some kind of physical representation of their goodness if they do something good, like help an old lady across the street?

doh! I encountered another problem. Since its actually my sister's computer that has the burner, I tried to put the revisited.iso file onto a usb-drive but it just won't work. It keeps claiming that the disk is full even though I've checked the numbers and there should be almost half the space left. That should be plenty of room, so I'm a bit lost on this one. Does anyone know what the problem might be?

USB drives are usually formatted in FAT32, which can only handle 4 GB files maximum. I had the same problem.

Oh, and just to make sure, you are making all of the Star Destroyer "exhaust" blue, right? I noticed a shot in RotJ that has both blue and yellow on seperate Destroyers, with most of the Empire ones just having white "exhaust." Also, what kind of consistency can be brought to the fact that most of the time in ESB only the three main engines are lit... I know you talked about doing the Falcon's, just making sure the Star Destroyers were included in that consistency check.

yeh the stardestroyers engines will be blue and as for the engines, i never noticed that only 3 are lit. not sure what to do there. I'll have to have a god think about that

I'm thinking that maybe when a Star Destroyer is at rest or in orbit it only need's 3 engines and it only needs all 7 when chasing Blockade Runners and Falcons. That could save you a lot of work.

A replacement for the titles
Time

I read that you were thinking about replacing the "Padawan Learner", "Ready for the Trials", etc titles from next to our names. I had a suggestion for a possible replacement that I mentioned on the Empire Strikes Back Revisited thread:

I think that the area next to our names that currently have our "ranking" that they're considering getting rid of should be replaced with things like "Purist" (original versions or death), "Revisionist" (changes/prequels aren't bad, but need tweaked), "Lucas Fanboy" (Lucas knows whats best), or others things we could choose in our profile. That way you'd know who you're dealing with without them harping on it.

It's not the best of ideas, but who knows what people will write if given free reign to their title?

EDIT: It was pointed out that "Lucas Apologists" might be a better term for the last one.

Sounds good, Ady. I don't hate the prequels as much as most around here, but it is a huge stretch to call them "great movies."

STAR WARS: EP V "REVISITED EDITION"ADYWAN - 12GB 1080p MP4 VERSION AVAILABLE NOW
Time

I was digging through T-bon'e Star Wars Universe and was just reading his review of the 2004 DVDs. He never mentions the bad colors (he believed they were deliberate changes), but I did find this part very interesting:

Right before the DVDs were released, I received a message from a friend who’s in the industry asking if I’ve seen the bad rendering of R2-D2 in Episode V. I really didn’t have any idea what he meant but he sent me a few pictures to compare the shots. I did and to be frank, I don’t really see anything all that upsetting. He seemed to be really upset about the big eye in particular.

Here's what he had to say:

What we are seeing here, is what appears to be a horrible re-rendering job of R2-D2. What I mean by this, is that they took the actual R2-D2 from the scene (that didn't have any 'blue' in it because it would have disappeared into the blue screen effects work) and placed CGI rendered 'blue pieces' over the originals to change the color of him from black to blue. What has incompetently occurred here is two serious flaws.

The first is the obvious poor rendering of R2's 'EYE' (the view port in the head that Kenny Baker could see out of) that is the square-ish panel on the front with a rounded lens in the center of it. What you will see, is how this horribly rendered replacement view port recreates R2's lens in an absolutely ridiculous and flawed way. Instead of being the right size, it is roughly 35% smaller and has the extra space around the lens made up with blue coloring. Just do a quick comparison between R2 in ANY other shot in the saga and you will see how HORRIBLE this looks and how poorly executed this change was.

Secondly, you will also notice in the same shot, that the side blue panels on R2 now also have an overlay of 'blue' to cover the original 'black' panels. These are just below the 'eye' and go around his head. The problem here is that by the end of the shot, R2 is moving his head back and forth, but the blue overlays move at a different speed to the rest of his head! So instead of a quick fine tuning that the effects element and rendering could have had, they sloppily just threw this overlay on, and didn't make any effort to perfect this effects shot.

In general, this is a horrible rendering job, and another embarrassment that no filmmaker should ever let get out. This DVD set was rushed, and the flaws of the rush are evident; especially the incompetent and inconsistent sound mix on A New Hope including the reversed music channels in the surrounds.

After looking at it for a while, I do see what he means but since my eye wasn’t looking for it, I didn’t notice it. The dark inset part of the eye is a bit small. Click on the image to the right for a nice comparison of all three versions of the shot in question. The top shot is from the new DVD set, the bottom left is from the original release (note the black panels on R2), and the bottom right is the 1997 Special Edition version. Looking at them all together it does seem they went a little overboard with the blue for the DVD release. Personally, I still don’t think this shot looks that bad but my friend was pretty adamant that it didn’t look so hot so I’d be remiss not to mention it. I mean, this is really nit picky stuff, after all. He’s a good guy and very professional so I’m sure his complaint is valid. I think he’s an R2-D2 fan so of course he’s a little biased. The set may have been rushed but it's OK for a set to hold us over until...whenever.

Here is the comparison:

http://img81.imageshack.us/img81/6541/1395fk3.jpg

I think I've noticed the drift before and this shot has R2's panels way more blue than the others, but CG panels when the 1997 version looks just fine? What do you think? Are they CG panels or just a product of the higher resolution?

And to bring it back to the revelency of the thread, how should Ady handle this?

You might need it if you're burning the DVD-9 to dual layer media using ImgBurn.

BUT, here is what you need to do:

1) Download WinRAR

2) Open the first file (should end in "part01.rar" or something similar) using WinRAR, then extract the ISO to wherever you want (it will automatically extract it from all of the parts, be patient and wait till it's all done)

3) If you're using Nero, or some other burning program, use "Burn image to disc" or similar, select the ISO file, and burn it to the Dual-Layered DVD

4) If you're using ImgBurn, you'll need to extract the ISO using the method described by Kurgan with DaemonTools, then take the files from VIDEO_TS_fixed.rar and drop them into the VIDEO_TS folder, REPLACING the existing files that are already in the folder. Then, you can either make a new image (someone else will have to walk you through that), or use Nero to burn the VIDEO_TS folder to Dual-Layered media.

Or, if you're sick of trying to deal with all this, PM me and I can put you on my PIF chain.

OK, so it won't differ quality-wise which one I use, Nero or ImgBurn, right?

Also, how do you extract the ISO?

Where do you extract it to? Just a separate folder?

If you just right click on the RAR file, one of the options should be "extract" or "expand". You can put the ISO wherever you want, as long as you remember where it is. And a burn is a burn, as long as you don't burn it too fast, so it doesn't matter what program you use to do it.

Ady, I just watched the "Old with the New" clip you posted, and I have to say that the audio is really shaping up. I think that I wouldn't even notice the "young Skywalker" instead of "Luke Skywalker", and the two "yes"s are almost perfect!

In other news, Imperial Fighter and I are almost done with our mock-up/storyboard ideas. Well, his ideas, I just put them together. He's not able to get me very many shots to do at a time because he's busy moving, but the ones he does get to me are shaping up very nicely. I think all will be pleased at the outcome, and I hope that even if you don't use exactly what he's come up with that it at least sparks some ideas for you. They should be ready to post sometime this week.

That's what I'm saying! Obi-Wan is tiny! I've always found his close-ups funny in this scene because I'm imagining them zooming in on a tiny Alec Guiness!

After thinking about it, I'm guessing they had him tiny so that they could have this shot:

http://img391.imageshack.us/img391/461/pdvd001hb0.jpg

which is cool, but weird if Obi-Wan is standing 15 feet behind Yoda and impossible if Obi-Wan is just made larger.

Alright, back to mini-Obi-Wan for a second. I think this shot could work if we go for the "Obi-Wan is standing really far away from everyone". Yoda would have to be out of focus while Obi-Wan is talking, then as he is vanishing Yoda would come into focus, rack focus style. If focuspuller on the boards is really a focus puller, he could tell us more about it.

I can't think of any OT FX shots that used rack focus or DOF. I'm not sure they could have done it with the technology of the time.

I always thought Obi Wan was standing away from Yoda and this was a perspective thing. The branch is the one shot screws it up, but like the tiny TIE in Jedi it's a mistake in the layer order. I hope Adywan includes a fix.

What is wrong with this scene? Because one or both should be out of focus? Just because something is not technically correct, doesn't mean it isn't romantically correct.

I'm not saying there's anything wrong with it. I'm just showing that Obi-Wan is a foot tall in this scene. I'm not saying it should be fixed because its either he's a foot tall or he's standing really far away from the people he's talking to, both of which is silly, but apparently important for some reason or they wouldn't have done it. It's easier to just leave him small, in my opinion.

i value everyones opinion and input and i will never agree with everything that is put in front of me. no one could ever say they would go along with everything that was put forward when doing an edit. Just because i don't like something doesn't make it good or bad. it just means that it doesn't go along with my vision, but could be very useful for someone else's edit.

Or useful for TESB: Purist Edition. ;-)

Speaking of the PURIST edition, I've noticed that if Ady were to make one for this edit it would have all of the SE changes back in, since most of the major changes to this movie are actually back to the original versions. I guess we couldn't call it "purist" for this one... "Revisionist" maybe?
