well the colour correction on Empire is coming along nicely. Vaders saber is again red and not pink. The walls in Cloud City are no longer blue. But there are many shots where most of the colour information is almost gone. I've said it before, and i'll say it again: Whoever did the colour restoration on these movies needs to be shot.  I'll post some more screenshots later

So are you just color correcting Vader's saber to be red, or are you going to go through and redo all of the sabers and laser blasts like you did with ANHR?

I didn't even realize he had done more than sound for movies until Good Musician started complaining about how he ruined the score for Episode II.  Where do we find evidence of him in the editing suite?

Um, in any documentary on the making of the prequels.

Plus, he's the EDITOR.

I guess I never paid attention because most of the time that I saw him in the documentaries, he was mixing the sound, which makes sense to me.  Sorry I don't have the prequel credits memorized.

How many times do you watch Star Wars (OT,OOT, GOUT) - over a period of time?
Time

I watched ESB in whole just a couple months ago, with the commentary track on to try to find things that might need tweaking for ESB:Revisited.  I watched ANH:Revisited just before the XVID came out, and maybe once on DVD-5, but not the DVD-9 all the way through.

Other than that, the last time I watched the movies completely through was my sophomore year of college (2002-2003) to show them to a friend who hadn't seen them all.  I started with Episode I and II, skipped III because it didn't exist yet, then watched the OT over the course of a month or so.  I guess we also just watched the 97 SE tapes since the DVD wasn't out then.

Hooray for SFX work!  I can't wait to see what you come up with to fix all of these ridiculous things we've pointed out in the last few months...

From movie mistakes to logical flaws to continuity errors to things no human should have ever noticed about any film, its nice to know that this edit is in the hands of someone who takes every suggestion seriously and is looking only to tweak an already great movie into perfection.

2006 DVD OOT

Speaking of crappy DVD covers (which the 2004 DVDs are pretty bad), have you really ever looked at the 97 SE posters?  Now I love Drew Struzan, and he did do this in a hurry, but I don't know...

http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a115/doubleofive/posters/ep4se.jpg

Nothing much to complain about in this one.  That shot of Leia isn't from ANH I don't think.

http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a115/doubleofive/posters/ep5se.jpg

I love the Empire poster, but it has Vader's TIE from ANH and Ian McDiarmid, who wasn't in that movie until 2004.

http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a115/doubleofive/posters/ep6se.jpg

OK, the centerpiece of this poster is the beginning of the battle from the previous movie.  I don't get that.

Maybe this is because they're meant to fit together, but he could at least have tried to use more images from the individual movies on the individual posters.

Waaay off topic, but it hit me a couple weeks ago.

I'm sure I'll sound like a broken record, at least to Adywan, but would there be any NTSC/PAL issues with these? I know Blu-Ray is region free, but these would be on DVD-9s, so...? Sorry, but at least if you tell me now, I won't have to ask again. :p

I believe that since they run at a native 24p there wouldn't be any problems and your Blu Ray player would do the framerate changes anyway.

Hey, I lurked this thread from the beginning, and I'm more than willing to help out with what I can.  A problem with splitting the film up to color correct is that we all might have different opinions on a way a scene should look, and someone might do one shot one way, and the cutaway might look completely different.  I guess we could have one person do all of the Exterior Mos Eisley scenes, for example, so that the walls don't change shades in between shots...

I'd love to do more color correction on your scans.  Since I tried to do a basic first pass on the ones I posted, I might just go through and try to perfect each one.  We'll see.

And I had problems with the aspect ratio, as 2.2 seemed way too stretched, so I did it at 1.9.

Wow, 4K. That would be incredible.

I was thinking yesterday while doing those color corrections (which were tons of fun by the way) about scratch removal, and the great thing about having all of these people willing to work on it and no deadline, is that we can actually split the movie into hundreds of pieces and have each person remove the scratches "by hand" instead of running it through some filter that will also get rid of the film grain/atmosphere.  I'm not sure how well it would work, but its always a possibility.

Adywan, do your new HD ersions have better picture quality than you revisits? Obviously they do or you wouldn't have them separate. But to this day the best source of SW is the '04 DVDs right, all thius HD stuff isn't SW in True HD. It's artificial HD, because there is n way to truely get better picture quality from DVDs right?

Janskeet you really should read up on what HD is and that my HD versions are from a high quality HD broadcast in true 1080p HD and therefore NOT artificial HD at all. These have nothing to do with my revisited edit at all so any questions about the differences in picture quality between the two is irrelevant because they are 2 totally different movies so that is why there are 2 separate threads.

The best source is not the 2004 DVD's at all. You really need to read the thread before posting . you seem to be just posting for the hell of it sometimes and doing this will only get you put on peoples ignore list. I noticed you just made a new thread about where my HD thread has gone when its only a few posts below this one.

Edit: i guess you beat me too it negative1. lol

Actually, this is inaccurate.  There is no such thing as a 1080p broadcast.

Not in America.  That's why Adywan uses the German HDTV broadcast.

Alright, I tried my hand at color correcting these bad boys.  I tried to make it as simple as possible, so this is the three-step process I did in Photoshop:

1. Adjust the Levels for each shot.
2. Color Balance, adjusting the shifted the Cyan/Red between -30 and -50 and the Yellow/Blue between -15 and -20.
3. Used Selective Color to add Reds back in.

They're not perfect, but I think they might be a good starting point.

http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a115/doubleofive/Reel6/th_swr6-13.jpg

In doing this, I found that throwing a blue filter is a really tempting way to fix a film faded like this.  I can understand, but not excuse, the 2004 DVD now.

new guy here. I really enjoyed ANH:Revisited, which I've watched 3 times in the last week. I want to contribute in some way. I have an idea I'm still fleshing out. Hold for procrastination until such date as I can catch up with myself.

Anyway, I'm still working my way through all 122 pages of this mammoth thread, so apologies for repeating what may have already been dealt with, but I wanted to mention something I just noticed.

The few exterior shots of the Echo Base hangar door in the beginning could use a little fog obscuring the view into the hanger, and maybe some billowing out. Nothing major or obvious. Subtle. It's warmer inside the hanger, right? The interior shot of Han trotting in on his tauntaun has that misty quality of a warmer interior space that's open to the colder exterior. But the exterior shot immediately before it lacks realism because it lacks the high-to-low pressure movement of that water vapor. Even obscured behind adywan's excellent personnel restructuring, that extra bit of environmental effect would really help to sell this shot.

And thanks, adywan! Thanks for putting in all the hard work for those of us without the talent! Instead we can just sit around and catalogue our every whim for you to realize!

(Edit: I realize this would be harder in, for example, the shot of Threepio and R2 waiting for Luke. Or am I wrong in thinking the hanger is warmer than the outside? Or am I wrong in thinking that would create vapor billowing out of the hangar door? Maybe the temp. difference is not large enough.)

Great idea *8.  I'm not sure its necessary because it may be just as cold in the base as it is out, but the effect would be interesting to see.

2) After the generator on Hoth is blown up, is it possible to make the lights dim momentarily in the corridor that Han is rushing through, to show the instant before the emergency lights kick in? Or perhaps if possible add a reddish tint to the corridor scenes to indicate emergency power?

This would be awesome.  I thought it was strange that they lost their generator but they still seem to have full power...

Not necessarily.  The SHIELD generator got blown up.  POWER generators are something separate.  There's no reason to believe the two were physically connected.  Logically, they shouldn't be.

If the power generators failed and the shield generators were run by them, then the shield generators would turn off and the shield would be down.

Likewise the reverse - if the shield generators also provided power for everything else, then the whole base would go dark when the sheild generators were taken out.

By having the shield and power generators separate and independent, you're better off.  If the shield goes down, you've still got power to run your equipment.  And if power for the equipment goes down, then the shield is still protecting you while you work on restoring it.

That makes sense.  Maybe I was confused because Veers says "Prepare to target the main power generator"...

He says "main generator".

Oh, ok.  My fault.  Still, maybe an explosion that large might knock out main power, at least for a second.  My vote is still for lights flickering/dimming momentarily.  I wouldn't leave them off for the whole rest of the scene, as that would be too much work to have them constantly flickering or changed to red.  Besides, changing it to red would negate the color correction Ady is working on right now!

I don't have one solid site, but Wikipedia has a lot on aspect ratios.

Since this is off-topic, I'm going to put together a site with an explanation of how aspect ratios and anamorphic works and edit my post here with a link to it.

EDIT: In studying to make my own site, I found this site, which says everything I wanted to say.  So nevermind on my site.

I'm surprised we didn't see a 10 year old Han Solo winning a bet for the millenium falcon against a ten year old Lando in episode 3.

I could feel that scene coming, and I swore before Episode III came out if there was any sign of Han Solo in the prequels, I was going to leave the theater, go home, sell everything I have having to do with the prequels, and pretend they didn't exist, much like many of you have done without that motivation.

At first I thought all the nods towards the OT were cute and clever, but the more I thought about it and the more it happened, I began to realize what they were: pandering to the OT fans.  I mean, the characters at points almost looked into the camera and winked after some of them.  The one that comes to mind immediately is Obi-Wan's comment in Episode II of "Why do I feel like you're going to be the death of me?"  HAHA, its funny because Anakin eventually IS the death of him.  But wait...  If we watch the movies in numerical order as Lucas obviously wants us to do, no one will get that.  Instead of being an off-hand reference to things we already know, it becomes a "spooky" prophecy that echoes in the back of our minds as Vader strikes Obi-Wan down.
