A theory about the coloring on the 04 DVDs.

I don't remember where it was mentioned, but there's an article the specifically states that ILM did the colors and just had Lowry clean it.  I think ILM tried to restore it themselves to save money, messed up the colors and hoped Lowry could fix it.

http://www.apple.com/ca/pro/film/lowry/starwars/index.html

That article mentions that Lucasfilm scanned the negatives, carried out the "re-mastering" (I assume this means the '04 alterations) and the re-colour timing. Then then attempted a cleaning pass through ILM, before deciding to give the job to Lowry.

Lowry received high-definition scans to work with from Lucasfilm. Although it is not clear in the article, it's reasonable to assume that the scans provided contained the tweaks and the new colours.

Thanks, that's the article I was referring to.  Why ILM would color-time their own movies so badly, I'll never know.

I did a mock up of what the shot of Veer's Walker being in the only one left might look like:

Used the shot of the tripped walker just before it gets blown up, the last frame of Luke's exploded walker, and Vaderios' matte at about the angle that it should be.

Vaderios has pointed out the turret facing the wrong way before and ImperialFighter has pointed out that the sun is behind the rebels in most of the other shots.  I don't think anyone has pointed out that there is a guy on a turret on frame right facing AWAY from the walker, confirming the oddity of this shot.  Were the Rebels supposed to charge the walkers at some point?  Beats me.

It's beautiful, but I feel like the mountain behind the walker takes away the feeling of a menacing big machine coming our way. I'd like to have the silhouette of the walker in an empty sky.

I wondered about that, but it wasn't a creative decision, I was just trying to match up the angle with Adywan's preview of Luke flying up the walker.

I'll see if I can move it a bit.

While I agree that they should have gone for an artifact or something more embedded into the collective unconscious (a REAL City of Gold, the original Cross, the Fate of Atlantis, the Infernal Machine, proof aliens built the pyrmaids, the last lightsaber (it did happen a LONG time ago)...), the mythology of 13 crystal skulls was not invented for Indy.  It's just more obscure.

Really, seriously?  Wow, I had no idea.  And I'm a Huge Nerd.

I know this is a work-in-progress, but going through it frame-by-frame (its so short, I'm justified!) I noticed that the falling walker doesn't move for the first frame.  I KNOW you're going to fix it, but I can't be too safe by not saying anything.

It's impossible to see in the full motion, I'm just having a great time flipping back and forth as everything moves but the walker defies all logic and stays perfectly still!

There is nothing saying you can't redo the skyline and make it clearer.

well you totally contradicted yourself about the sky here Monroville. As i've said i'm not changing anything about the new shot. it works perfectly well for me. The brightness matches the other shots in the sequence whereas before , as i have said already, the original shot looked stormy. I guess there is only one way to settle this as you need to see it in motion and in context with the rest of the sequence. I'm wondering just how many are still comparing the colouring with the 2004 shots instead of my colour corrected version?

IN MOTION

please don't post this clip on youtube because it isn't finished. ignore the first shot because that's just the colour corrected version and i haven't begun work on this yet

Wow.  Honestly, I was kind of worried about the busy-ness of the shot, but I think it flows well, and brings some more battle to the battle, just like you did to Yavin.  Great work.  I don't even think the reused tripped walker needs to be replaced, its hard to tell that its the same one!

I think its because Stargate tried to fit in with existing mythology.  Mysterious Crystal Skulls, no one knows about.  A council of 13 "gods" in a circle could be anything.  What 13?  Is that a significant thing somewhere?  Stargate (the series at least) had several aliens admittedly pretending to be gods still going by the names we gave them.  We have no explanation (that I can remember) of the Indy4 aliens, whose gods they were supposed to represent, how much technology and wonders of the worlds they are responsible for, why we would represent any of them as looking human.

Everyone knows the Ark and the Grail.  No one knows about Crystal Skulls, or a lost tribe they made up to fit their own mythology.  Instead of going with something everyone knows, they started with something real and added their own fake backstory instead of using REAL backstory and explaining it using aliens.

You notice that Hurley said that Luke found out Vader was his father, kept fighting and lost his hand, when in the movie, its the other way around?  Is this Hurley mis-remembering, or did he re-write it and Lucas actually use it, and the new version is creeping backwards through time, affecting his memory?  My brain just exploded.

Tie fighters? How about Republic Cruisers? and Hellfire droids and an army of Stormies? And droid spiders? And Landed Star destroyers? lol J/k

For what reason? i mean after the shields are down Tie fighter must take action to eliminate the remains or shoot escaping vehicles ;)

You misread, Angel.  We were discussing the added CGI TIEs in ANHR, not adding TIEs to the Hoth battle.

also the whole continuity problems will mean that unless i can get new shots of the ESB AT-ST to insert into this sequence, then it will have to go from the shot where luke looks up to see the AT-AT explode. One minute its there and the next its gone

Is there any way to create a new shot with 3-D models?  Similar to the way you added the TIE fighters in ANH?

Its the walking animation that no one can seem to get right that's the problem.  Flying TIEs around is easy, they have no moving parts. :-)

In this case, I like the original DVD shot better.  I could see adding an AT-AT in the mid ground on the left (to balance the far off AT-AT and the foreground one - one that is mid size between the 2 we see) but the matte Ady is using looks very fakish.  I could see maybe doing something with the cloudscape, but the back"ground" should stay the same (just color corrected).

But nothing of the original DVD shot makes any sense with any of the shots around it, like I showed.  And its suddenly foggy in the shots with Luke's target walker.  Doesn't make any sense.

Last night's episode (titled "Some Like It Hoth") was strangly on topic for these boards.  Hurley in 1977 trying to write Empire Strikes Back from memory, making it a little better, and avoiding Return of the Jedi especially the Ewoks?  Awesome.

... holy shit.  Why did I not watch that last night?

Off to ABC's website to watch it in HD ......

I watch my episodes Thursday morning so I can do my Facebook recaps, but I almost didn't for this episode.  Miles-centered?  Come on.  The title was the only thing that inspired me to watch it instead of tossing the recap to someone else.  I'm glad I did.  Its only a couple scenes, but part of it is ACTUALLY THE MORAL OF THE EPISODE.  I'll let you watch it yourself.

Wow...never noticed that, all these years.  And we think the Prequels are bad with continuity...How did that ever pass?

I'm sure it came down to money.  "Hey, this shot needs another week's worth of work to make it match!" "Eh, no one will ever notice."

Makes sense that more than one would be brought down by tripping them, and they probably would fall in similar ways.

Sorry, but I think the colors in the image on the far right looks best, actually. But then, I am watching this on a PC with different gamma than a television.

There is one thing that bugs me, though: It is illogical for Luke's airspeeder to be in the left in the picture, when he is clearly running after the AT-AT. The airspeeder should be on the right in the shot, if at all.

In the images on the left, there is still a boulder left from the 2004 image that I think stands out.

The colors may look OK on the DVD, but the entire shot doesn't match any shot before or after.  It's too dark, too blue, too cloudy.  If you really watch the Hoth battle, the changing weather and background jump out at you.

And what airspeeder are you talking about?  I don't see one in any of the versions...

From what I can remember its goes something like this

when Qui gon died there was balance in the force so he was burned on the Pior which is jedi tradition

then later on there is imbalance so he finds a way back via the force

the imbalance is so strong that OBI & Yoda disolve into the force at the time of their deaths

when Vader dies he has restored the balance to the force by killing El Sid, & as a result luke Burns his remains as is the tradition.

Never heard that one.  Why couldn't Lucas have made it easier?  Oh yeah, he didn't watch the OT when he was writing the PT, and only addressed issues as they were pointed out to him, promising answers in "the next movie."

I agree, but Lucas never explained if Qui-Gon learned this secret about staying around as a Force ghost and taught it to Yoda, who taught it to Obi-Wan just before they both went into exile, how would Anakin know about it?  And why didn't Qui-Gon disappear (of course, that's fixable, but Obi-Wan would have freaked out next to that pit if he had never seen that before).

It's all sloppy.  All Jedi should have disappeared when they died.  Then nothing would be wrong.  I'm still upset about that.
