Terminator Salvation declared Rotten by Top Critics on Rotten Tomatoes.
Time

The show was awesome, but had a few too many Time Traveling Terminators.  The Connors burned all they could, but it looks like there were plenty of scrap to build a whole new Skynet around.  Remember in T2 when the chip and arm of the first T-800 were such a threat to humanity?  Now they're outdated models and everyone has a piece of a T-888!

You'd think Skynet would have uploaded itself with T-800s and started producing infiltrators from day one.  At least its only 14 years after JD and they're figuring this out.  According to T1, they had just started making T-800s in 2029, THIRTY TWO YEARS after the 1997 JD!

This kind of makes sense with what we know of the changing timeline from the TV series.

But this movie completely ignores the TV show.  There's two timelines to the "Terminator" series:

TIMELINE A (Official): The Terminator; Terminator 2: Judgment Day; Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines; Terminator: Salvation

TIMELINE B (Alternate): The Terminator; Terminator 2: Judgment Day; Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles

And as far as in-universe timelines for the movies, there's the T1/T2 "closed-loop" timeline, where Judgment Day occurs in 1997.  Then the events of T2 change the future, so that Judgment Day now occurs in 2003, so everything from T3 onward follows the changed (2003 Judgment Day) timeline instead of the original (1997 Judgment Day) timeline.

I think there are too many changes to the Salvation timeline for it to actually ride the T3 timeline.  Kate being a surgeon instead of a vet, 10 years too early T-800s...

I'm not sure what I'll do if I ever update my Terminator Timeline again.  Either create a new timeline due to the changes made in T3, or move T3 to a new timeline and guess that T4 is what would have happened if Skynet hadn't sent the T-X back.

I didn't care for it.  It had its moments, but it was TERRIBLY edited (partly to make it PG-13, partly for no apparent reason at all).  I liked all the references to the previous movies, but they made me want to watch the original films INSTEAD of finishing the one I was watching.  My full review is on my WordPress.

SPOILERS (not present in my full review):

  • So Marcus is a cyborg, a Terminator body with a human brain and heart.  And why does Skynet need this?  If they already started production on the T-800 which is designed for infiltration, what reason would they have for keeping Marcus' free will, which allows him to escape and save John?  And if they're so effective, why not do this to all of the prisoners instead of continuing with the T-800 who all look the same (that we've seen).
  • I didn't see John being upset during his "WE ARE ALL DEAD!" speech because the Resistance was being inhuman, but because John didn't want his dad to die before John could be conceived.  As low on the totem pole as John seemed in 2018, I think the Resistance would have been fine without him existing.
  • Where did Kyle learn his survival techniques, being one of the only humans in LA and a toddler during Judgment Day.  Who raised him?  Questions, questions.
  • Where are my fields covered in skulls?  Every time we see the future, we see fields of skulls!  I didn't see any skulls in this movie, let alone fields of them!
  • On the big Arnold reveal towards the end, most of my theater laughed in disbelief.  I thought the effect was well done, but still cheesy.  Don't they make any other models of T-800?

But seriously, I blame everything on McG.  Of the two prequel/sequel/reboots this summer (a genre that didn't exist last year), Star Trek wins by actually being an enjoyable movie.  TS has just too many pacing, editing, and creative problems.

EDIT: I just figured out what it was like!  A bad fan-edit!  Bad transitions, obviously missing sequences...  It's like McG fan-edited his own movie!

That's a bit harsh. He may not have had much creative input but he was undeniably crucial to the logistics involved in making the films; that's his job. It's the *executive* producer who's usually accused of sitting around and making money from it, and in this case the EP is Lucas himself.

I was just going off of the interviews on the DVDs and such.  Rick has always been a target of abuse from my friends and I, so I give him a hard time.

I played D&D 3rd Edition my last couple years of college, and then moved on to variations of 3.5 Edition for a couple years.  Had a couple friend who were really good DMs (what amounts to the storyteller/god of the game).  My roommate was known for his harsh tactics and insane attention to detail.  He spent an entire summer building a whole world, then ran probably 7 or 8 of us through it.  It was crazy.  Mine was the only character to live the whole way through.

Early this year, I decided that since I couldn't find anyone to play with, I would DM.  So I bought the 4th Edition Core Rulebooks and "Keep on the Shadowfell", a premade adventure meant to introduce people to the mechanics.  My wife, one of her friends, and her friend's husband all play, so I have to both DM and play at least one non-player character to make the fights more even (I made a dumb fighter who wouldn't be able to spoil the story).  We just finished "Keep" and I'm about to start them on "Thunderspire Labrinyth", the next premade adventure as I'm not ready yet to create my own.  I am modifying "Thunderspire" a bit, giving it some more coherency and a bit tighter plot.

It's fun, but I miss just playing.  It's hard to DM because if people aren't having fun, its no one's fault but your own!

Amazing.  Being a bit too young to have caught the movies in theatres, I've always wondered how people reacted to the shift in episode numbers, especially how kids reacted to it.  I've never heard a story like that before, but it's a pretty well-informed rationalization.

I learned my roman numerals from the Star Trek movies, so when I finally realized what the "V" meant on my home video I think I asked my dad, but he didn't know.  Never really thought about it after that.

Executor Bridge! How wonderful :)

Pity i cant say the same for ROTJ version of it.

Based on ESB matte-set then:

I post that in some big rez to see some details or what.

I hate dead blacks...

This shot is going to have to be worked on for many reasons. For one thing: why is that station right in the middle of the friggen walkway?!  Think about it for a second: take the opening bridge shot in EMPIRE and stick a guy on a console right in the dead center of the set.  Is Vader going to have to say "excuse me" every time he wants to pace up and down the center walkway to keep an eye on the other guys?

Or the whole wall for that matter?  Strange.  They had the whole set (looks like they built more of it because there's no more matte lines around the center window), but they put the consoles up wrong and put one guy in the middle of the walkway!  How strange indeed.

Has been montioned, with a strangely similar conclusion as to why in the post.

A lot of that going around lately...

(EDIT) vaderios beat me to it. And there is a lot of this going around lately too....

Is there any feasible way to fix it?

As you can see, the blurriness is the fix!  ILM cut out the characters with no level of blur at all (look at Lando's hair and Chewie's whole body).  Its just a matter of finding the balance between the cardboard-cut-out SE and the maybe-too-blurry Revisited Trailer.

Kingdom of the Crystal Skull Edit Suggestions

He didn't have me mock up any more credits, so I don't think he planned at all to have opening credits.  It's a loss, but not much of one.

You know, its weird taking so many shots for someone and still having no clue what he's planning.  So far, I like it a lot.  Beginning with the Elvis and car chase was a bit much.  I saw the movie in theaters with a friend, his first Indiana Jones movie (he's young(er)!).  I think opening with that turned him off, or mislead him as to what kind of movie this was supposed to be.

Like "Anything Goes" is better in that regard, but I like "Anything Goes".  It's catchy.

Maybe G.E. Predator could use it, too. Wouldn't hurt to have it up with the proper a.r. a few times.

I'm a bit hurt by that, Ripplin.  I uploaded the trailer in my YT last night to share with all, especially those YT viewer who have not yet seen the trailer...yet I'm not really feeling any appreciation for my efforts just because the picture is a little stretched.

All Ripplin meant was that more people will find it if more people have it up.  Some people won't appreciate it not being in the right AR and will give the whole project a pass if they think that's the way its going to be...

My question for Ady is how is he going to do officers pit part without it looking repeated? I see it's using the part from where Needa and the other guy are on the bridge when the falcon flies so close to the bridge. All those officers are posed the same way as in the earlier shot, so how is he going to stop it from looking like reused shot?

Alright, I went through the film and found examples of all the pit shots to compare, and I ran into a problem:

The pits on the Executor and Avenger are set up differently.  Check it out:

You can see that Executor's stations are set up in a straight line, none against the outside wall.

The Avenger has them staggered.  The bottom right shot comes from what is supposed to be the Executor, but is obviously a flipped shot of the shot above it (the SE puts the commander's rank on the correct side).

Now Ady's beautiful new shot uses an Avenger bay on the Executor.  I'm sure no one will notice (no one has mentioned the bottom left shot before!), and I think if the new shot is short enough, even less people will notice its a reuse.  If Kershner can do it in the original, Ady can now.

EDIT: look at the different colors in every shot!  Who quality checked this thing?!

I'll just say "No problem" for everyone.  I love playing detective, and finding the right frames and what had been changed was fun!  Glad I had the extra time to do it though, it did take a while.

EDIT: Don't want to make two posts in a row, so here's my mockup of the side view of the Emperor hologram:

Brilliant job, Adywan! The colours are vibrant, everything resounds with crystal clarity, and every updated element is a major improvement. Absolutely no negative reactions here; everything's awesome. As stoked for this release as I already was, you somehow managed to crank to excitement factor up another tenfold. Kudos, sir. You are truly a pinnacle in this fanbase.

And 005, many thanks for your comparison slideshow. It was quite helpful in pointing out some of the minor details that I otherwise would've missed. :)

Can't wait for 2010!

Heck, I showed it to Ady and he missed stuff!  Angel pointed out the hint of a window in Leia's shot as she's shooting the Stormtrooper, so I added it just before it went live.

Also, I didn't know where to put it, but Ady has made Ian McDiarmond say "Yes" twice before he says "he would be a great asset" instead of the one he does on the DVD.

There's definitely a side frame - when the Emperor and Vader are walking from the shuttle when the Emperor first arrives.  They're walking, sure, but I think it'd work.

He just needs a still frame, as the Emperor really doesn't say much from the side.  He could even pick a frame where you can't see his face at all!
