Anyway, although I happen to really like this additional SE shot of the Falcon interior and crew (perhaps someone can put the WHOLE screenshot up? -  it seems to be a re-use of one just a little earlier in the approach to Bespin City), I personally always found this 'floating' element in the top left-hand side a HUGE distraction in the overall shot, as the eye is drawn away from everything else....including the more interesting subtle 'Cloud-car' elements that are going on.  Also, it is not seen in any of the subsequent background shots of the City whatsoever.

As you wish.

Ah, a text commentary. Seems like that'd be pretty hard to read on an iTouch! Still cool, I didn't know about the text commentary, a spoken commentary would have been awesome though.

It's a bit difficult to read:

I love the text commentary.  While an audio commentary would be awesome (I still want Ady to do an MP3 we can sync along with the DVD, shame he doesn't like the sound of his voice), the text commentary allows for simply pointing out changes as they happen.  When I showed it to my wife and her friend, I ended up doing an audio commentary of my own though! ;-)

Hate to post twice in a row, but here's the link to the "complete" list.

I didn't go through each individual frame that was changed (like the Visual Comparison does), but I tried to compile everything from the First Post, the DVD commentary, and the Visual Comparison text.  Since most of those deal with visual changes, I may have missed some audio stuff.

I don't believe it is complete, so feel free to PM me if you notice anything I missed.

The PURIST version has no music from the other movies.  That's about it, really.  It's also only a single-layer DVD with no menus.  If you did not download one of the DVDs, you may have ended up with the XVID version, which is almost a "rough draft".

And you're free to have an opinion.  The edit does have parts that people seem to split on, and that's OK!

I'm still not sure how they broke that saber.  It looks like one could adjust the brightness and get a decent fix (I set the white balance to the core of Vader's saber on this):

This brings out the Emperor's "slug" in a big way (never noticed it until I was playing with this yesterday).

The best way is saber replacement:

Special thanks to Ady for sending me an AE project file with his sabers so I could replicate them exactly using Photoshop.  This is also responsible for my random signature.

I did some editing a few years ago in college.  Final Cut Pro 3, I think it was (I wasn't in college that long ago, they just were behind the times).  I have a degree in "Media Communication", but I work in IT.  I really want to edit again, loved it.

Really want to see your friend's work.  Sounds awesome.  Of course, we'll need a different thread, don't want to take this one too far off topic (again).

It has never been the editing bits of SW:R that has had people impressed, but rather those added elements. It is just down right ridiculous how easy it has become in to do editing on your home PC in the last few years. It is no exaggeration to say that it can be done by absolutely anyone who is willing to give it a try. But those added elements are the thing that makes Ady's edit unique, it, not the editing, is what puts many here in awe.

Right, its not the digital editing that makes this edit unique, its the added or removed elements.  The seamless removal of the SE Ronto that walks in front of the camera using dozens of elements from GOUT and Laserdisc sources is probably the most unsung change of the edit.

Ghostface, I don't think you're being as difficult as everyone else thinks you are.  Everyone has an opinion, that's fine.  And its hard to be constructive at this point with the edit being completed and finalized, never to be re-revisited.

Wow, I was thinking about suggesting that Ady do that while we're in this lull.  Not the whole random donation part (as I lack the funds to donate), but the rough draft review idea.  I hope it works out and you get some good critiques and hopefully the random person you pick doesn't just disappear with it!  Maybe you could watermark it not only with a "rough draft" title but their name!  LOL

I think Ady is holding off on RotJ until he's ready to start work on the Revisited version.  Apparently the colors are really bad in RotJ, or at least a lot more work to fix than the prequels.

Ady, are these going to be the color bases for the Revisited versions?  Do you have the hard drive space to keep all these HD files around for x years?

I'd also like to ask you if you work in the film industry, a film school student/ graduate or have no connections whatsoever

He asks this in sincerity, because one of the first "negative" reviews was from Mojo_LA who is a Hollywood VFX artist that worked on BSG and Star Trek (among other things).  His only real FX problem was the TIE scene which is explained here (before Ady did some tweaks to the shot, I believe).

As he explained:

Ady and his small team have done incredible, very professional work. It's 95% to the same standards we work towards on prime-time TV shows. I was very serious when I said that Ady could use his edit as a resume and get a job at probably any effects studio in Hollywood. I know I would hire him!

And this is a guy with real experience and a job in the industry, who actually offered to use his render farm to help fix what he thought could be better!

Editing wise, he didn't care for some of the changes:

I like most of what Ady did, but my friends and I were horrified at the music added to the saber fight in ANH. It doesn't belong there and is a far worse change than anything Lucas ever did. I'll take a 100 Greedos firing first over THAT.

Hamfistedly laying music behind it doesn't appreciably change it or make it better, so why not just leave it be?

Most of what Ady has done to his cut DOES help it, but I think in a few spots he suffers from "kid with a new toy" syndrome and is finding every last change he can make just for the sake of it.

But that was his opinion.  Of course, comparing adding music to Greedo shooting first instantly changed the tone on the board and he ended up leaving.  We lost a good possible resource that day.

Not sure why I reenacted "The Tragedy of Darth Mojo", except to point out that we've been through this before with someone who knew what they were talking about.

How many other people have recolored the entire movie, re-rotoscoped every lightsaber blade and blaster bolt, added backgrounds to every cockpit shot, updated control panels, and fixed 98% of the continuity errors?  Even ignoring the editorial changes, its a damn fine piece of work.

It's not so much the editing for me as the SCOPE and the attention to the Blessed Continuity.  This is THE LEAST Lucas should have done for us.

Technically if you only go by Revisited, this is the first time we've seen that Star Destroyer shot, and its flipped in ESB! ;-P

I tease, but seriously, how else do you build a fleet on the cheap without reusing elements and flipping shots?

^ undoctored shot from Return of the Jedi ^

If you notice, there are only 3, maybe 4 ships in that shot.  If ILM can do it, Ady can too.
