Info & Ideas: ESB and ROTJ Wishlist

It might be nice to see a revival and enhancement of the Star Destroyer gunner room from ANH in the space battle (where the officers contemplate shooting down the escape pod).

It could be used for showing Star Destroyers targeting fighter craft as the gun doesn't look big enough to do much damage to the capital ships.

I really like this idea. I added it to the Wishlist.

My mom came across the Ewok movies, so I should have those soon. I'll see if anything could be salvaged from them (2-sided full-screen DVD doesn't seem promising for very large elements).

Wow, just wow. You guys are too funny. I love doubleofive's forced subtitles for Chewie and R2 idea, but I love TheBoost's cockney idea just as much. Maybe these aren't mutually exclusive. The accent could be so thick and full of cockney slang that it needs subtitles just to understand it.

-G

Exactly! You know that R2 is told to watch his language a few times, maybe he swears all the time. Even if 3PO directly translates what he's saying ("He says that he's found her and keeps repeating she's here") 3PO could be editing R2 for content, if you know what I'm saying.

How about we go through and take out Artoo's beeping, and put in dialogue... to make the film easier to follow? I think he should have a cockney accent.

I was seriously thinking about subtitling R2 and Chewie. I think it would be fun to try to figure out what everyone else is responding to. Not in a serious way of course, but a fun side edit for someone.

STAR WARS: EP IV 2004 REVISITED ADYWAN *1080p HD VERSION NOW IN PRODUCTION
Time

I had my dad over this weekend and we were looking through my DVD collection for something to watch. We had it narrowed down to two movies and were about to make a choice when he noticed my stack of Star Wars DVDs.

"Why do you have so many Star Wars movies?"
"One of them is a fan edit, where a guy went through and fixed all of the mistakes and stuff."
"Can we watch that?!"

Now he hadn't seen the movie in a long time and maybe saw the 97SE once and never saw the DVD, but I think he really liked what he saw (he had to leave before it was over and didn't get to see the DS Attack).

It was nice to watch Star Wars with my dad again, because I remember when I was growing up he used to read the crawls to me even after I could read. I wanted to thank Adywan again for giving us a version of Star Wars we can watch and it be new again.

BTW, my wife commented (it was her second time watching ANHR) that she liked the electric needle: "i liked it. it made it NOT look like they glued a syringe to the bot." I agree with her. Maybe some tweaking (it looks like it appears a bit late in the shot since the needle is so small), but I still think you should keep it.

Also, I really watched the Kenobi Hut re-arrange this time, and I have to say that it makes so much sense in its scripted order that I don't think I can go back the way it was.

doubleofive, awsome work on your Revisited Visual Companion. Second only to Adywan's text commentary track!

One small note, however. The shot that shows the new Tie reveal says that it features "GC Tie's" rather than CG.

I just host it because it was my idea, but Ady did all of the comparisons and text. Which is good, because I was trying to do it myself not having either movie on my computer, taking each disc out. I got about 45 minutes into the movie when Ady said that he started doing it himself and had literally found hundreds of changes more than I had. So I let the master do it himself. ;-)

Is it just me, or does Luke's saber in the 2nd frame look too short, too skinny, and too bent?

No need to get bent out of shape, Luke!

Looks to me like every frame Ady posted has something wrong with it's lightsaber rotoscoping (no new ESBR screens indeed!). Something we'll only see if we go through it frame by frame, but you know some of us will.

I don't think Ady had to figure it out...

Just playing. Language is funny sometimes. :) Think he'll ever clue us in?

You know, I knew it would come across as that, but I was too lazy to restructure the whole post.

I think its either for splitscreen video ease or he did a rough version of PURIST for the Visual Comparison...

Someday, I'm want to make a splitscreen comparison of the whole movie. Not sure how I could do the straight-up rearranged scenes short of rearranging them on the original...

If it's a DVD comparison you could have two seperate audio channels for the viewer to switch between.

Right, I'm thinking something like WookieGroomer's Split Screen. But this is definitely a "someday" proposition, and others could definitely take this up instead of me.

I'm beginning to wonder if this was the reason the PURIST edition exists (since Ady said that no one but him has figured out the real reason behind it)...

There is a R2 unit right at the beginning of the Mos Eisley sequence that has a white dome with white panels and a green frame thing for the eye.

If a colour scheme like that were used it would make the droid look even less like R2 and push the impression even further away.

Ah, interesting. Replace this red droid:

With this green one:

I'm gonna give that a shot, see how it looks.

It would be interesting to see how a battle droid would function without the remote assistance from a Trade Federation Ship. One would argue that Palpatine gave the order to have all of the Trade Federation droids shut down. Then again, he also gave the famous "Order 66" to the clone army to kill all the Jedi, and in the book "Dark Lord: Rise of Darth Vader" it was revealed that not every clone trooper followed that order.

That being said, I look forward to your fan fic about that battle droid head in Adywan's fan edit.

Fan fic should be fun, though true be told I never liked that battledroid in there. I think a pit droid would have been more appropriate, ah well.

Fan fic would be fun, unless Ady approves of it. That would make it EU. Then we would become the very thing we're trying to fight... ;-)

I'll work on it some more, but I would need to know a couple things about the PTR (will battle droids talk? etc.)

Woot? V2 of SWR? For gods sake dont become another Star Wars tinker man!

Hang on, we aint stung in the pocket for every re-release :-)

Id love to say i had the new updated edition to people who have revisted already (just for those in the know ;-)).

I find all this V2 of SWR a bit anal, and also insulting to Adywan who spent over two years of his life correcting mistakes and tinkering with effects to make them better - for free!!!

No matter what Adywan did, some people were never satisfied with what they got, and feel the need to go one step further with the ultimate 'Revisited' edit. Even then they'll complain or want to change something else. Any edit past the 'Revisited' edit by Adywan is a totally different edit and therefore shouldn't be called a 'Revisited' revisited edit.

Its done, dusted and best left as is, and that is a masterpiece. Thank-you Adywan!

And I thought it was Anakin that was whiny.

Damn Straight if it aint broke don't fix it

Um, it was Ady's idea, and its mostly so we can have an audio commentary. He might change maybe 3 things. I would think of it as a NON-PURIST version with commentary more than ANHR Revisited.

I think a shockwave in any form is a good idea. It seems in the original that Alderaan just sort of popped like a balloon when hit, which I don't think works very well for a planet. Since the Death Star is basically overpowered reactor and metal, I think its alright and even more dramatic when it just pops.

Maybe next year, after ESB:R is finished, i may do a V2 of ANH:R with a few very minor changes with a commentary track.

The only thing I would suggest for a ANH:R 2 would be to remove the Trade Federation Droid head from the Jawa Sandcrawler. It was cute, but not really necessary. Also, it boggles the mind. We haven't seen the Seperatist army anywhere on Tatooine, and Jawas are not known for traveling off of Tattooine.

OK, I've been afraid to admit it, but I was thinking about writing a fan fic about that battle droid (OK, I started writing it). I'm thinking it was discarded by Jabba after buying a few dozen after the war, but they weren't very efficient. Don't want to spoil too much in case there's actually an interest and I feel like actually finishing a writing project (I'm not much of a writer, just an idea kinda guy).

Something I just noticed in Adywan's list of corrections...

adywan said:

...140 - The window at the back of Vader's cockpit has been blacked out because there should be no window...

...154 - When Vader spins out of control you can now see stars through his cockpit windows...

Is this a typo?

I'm taking it that the window Ady is referring to is the one that could be directly behind Vader, as opposed to the ones above him. In the regular TIE fighers, the pilot area is just a pod, with the engines on either side. With Vader's TIE, the pod has a tube with wings connected behind it (which means that any portal directly behind him, be it a door or a window would be blocked). The windows in top (the 4 long rectangular windows) are indeed present on both versions of TIE fighters.

Monroville is right:

I guess I'll throw my two cents worth out there....please ditch the star trek "praxis" ring. please.

The Praxis ring is in the Stargate explosion he used to replace the original. He'd have to find yet another explosion to replace it with in that case.

Okay, even though that's just a maybe, seeing as I just missed out on finding out about ANH:R in time to contribute any ideas for it the first time round....I hope to get a chance to mention a couple of little extra touches / missed possible 'fixes' for consideration this time round.

Now I give you permission to ruin ANHR for me like you always threatened. If there's a chance to fix it, bring it on!

doubleofive - I have a couple of things in mind for a 'mock-up' of the 'Torture Droid' that Adywan wasn't 100% happy with the first time around, if you'd be willing to help me with that sometime....

I would love that. Didn't get into the credits the first time around, time to earn my keep! ;-)

Sorry, I'm still in shock. I'm trying to compile a complete list of changes to what will be V1 (what does that make the XVID then, or the DVD5?!) and not a day has gone by since I posted it that I haven't found at least one thing I missed or never noticed.

I can't think of what you would change. Unless you'd be changing things BACK (spinning starfield, anybody?)

I definitely like the SE shot better, as it actually shows Cloud City instead of blank and dull clouds. I hope Ady keeps this shot.

Maybe I should have clarified that this isn't a pre-SE/post-SE comp; these are both from the DVD. The top is the shot while the Cloud Car pilots tell Han not to deviate from his present course. The bottom is the SE Approach shot where they reused that same plate for the expanded footage. This is fine, I never noticed they were identical, I was just searching for where they got this plate.
