This And the fact that the fans asking for Boba Fett to return ended with... well, Boba Fett kinda return, only shows one thing: Lucas did not have a "grand plan".

He wanted to please himself in TPM without thinking about the fans which I think was a couragous move even if I don't like much the result. But then why try to please the fans by removing Jar Jar and adding Fett? If "the plan" was for Jar Jar to be a better character in EP 2, I think it would have been better than watching Lucas trying to "fix" the story to please everyone, resulting a mess of a movie.

Going back to Qui-Gon not disappearing and Lucas saying he'd explain it in Episode II.  Then all of a sudden, its 5 minutes before the last movie ends:

"George, remember how you said that you'd explain why Qui-Gon didn't disappear and Obi-Wan and Yoda do?"
"How dare you mention what happened in 'those movies' in my presence!  But I suppose I should try...  How about this.  Yoda tells Obi-Wan that Qui-Gon figured out how to keep his individuality and be a ghost.  There, done."
"But sir, how does that explain anything?  Qui-Gon didn't disappear, that's the point.  If Obi-Wan and Yoda had to disappear to become ghosts, why didn't Qui-Gon?  And if Qui-Gon taught Obi-Wan and Yoda to do it after he was dead, how does Anakin show up as a ghost at the end of Return of the Jedi?"
"WHAT DID I JUST TELL YOU ABOUT MENTIONING THOSE MOVIES!  That's it, fine, you know what?  I'm going to replace Anakin in the third movie with Hayden, what do you think of that?!"
"How does that help-- what are you doing?"
"Choking you with the Force!"
"You know what, I quit."
"I'm going to make Chewie and Yoda best friends, what do you think of that quitter?!"

Not quite on topic, but it came to me just now.

Doubleofive, why not try doing some stuff yourself? It's really not so hard once you get to grips with the software you're using. Well, if you're artistically inclined, of course. Do you do anything creative?

I need some software with which to get to grips, but I do have a general degree in media communications.  I just don't have the opportunity to use it much.  I do some light logo design, and did design the logo for the company I work at, which is cool to point at and say "I did that."  Wish they would update the website so I could just point you there.

Bringing back the rearranging of the ending sequence of RotS.  This is from the "'Explanations' of Vader" thread on SW General:

Tarkin was a Wayne Pygram in a halloween mask :

Pygram Tarkin

Wow, that's not the best makeup job, and why on earth is he so old 20 years before ANH?!  Here's a picture of Peter Cushing in 1957's The Curse of Frankenstein.

He looks great!  Certainly not ancient like RotS Tarkin.  Maybe it didn't take 20 years to build the new Death Star, maybe the movie should have ended with the construction just like has been suggested!  Perhaps that is what was meant all along?

But then the prequels came along and gave both Yoda and Palpatine lightsabers, so... yeah....

Some of you are aware of my continued quest to shield my kids from the Prequels.  So it probably doesn't surprise you that we have a Galactic Heroes Yoda floating around the house that has had its lightsabre dremel'd off.

But I agree with you Gaff, (it's so great having a female Star Wars fan that shares my innermost thoughts on the subject (PM sent!)) I was shocked and dismayed to see Yoda and the Emperor with lightsabres.  It seems that they were certainly above or beyond this in the OT.  I thought it was kind of amusing that the Force Unleashed took it upon itself to show Palpatine losing his sabre before you fight him.  They seemed to want an OT style fight between you and the Emperor, but they felt they had to explain why he wasn't using a lightsabre.

LOL, Gaffer needs a new avatar.  Unless he likes this attention.  You should check out his video reviews.

I use deviantart, but I'm not putting my artwork anywhere at full res, not a chance. I don't mind sending to people privately sometimes when I know them a while, but I can't publish anything for free, whether it's inspired by other material or totally original.

So legally (or contractually), no one could use your mattes unless you were getting paid?  Man, that sucks.  Guess it comes with the "job in the industry" territory.

I confirmed that the settings are the way they are supposed to be got one random message.

Just thought to check my spam filter, which I have hidden on my gmail.  Hello my friends!  How I've missed you!  Odd that they started going to spam, odder still that some would get to my inbox.  Sorry about that.  If someone is using Gmail and having this problem, check out the spams.

EDIT: everything is coming in great now.  Some IT guy I am, huh?

Love the visuals, but I think the celebrators should be a bit bigger/zoomed.  Part of me is looking at it like "what the heck am I looking at?  Oh, those tiny guys there!"  Maybe if this was used as part of a pan down from the planet down, but as a static shot, its a little too grand for me.  Might be different in motion since nothing else would be moving, I'm not sure.

Actually, one thing I must ask, is there a comparison anywhere of the lighsabers from all six films? They change every film, I know, but a side by side would be helpful. I don't mean just screenshots from each film side by side, either, I mean like a fanmade six lightsbaer comparison, based on each of the films.

Lightsaber blades?  Lightsaber handles?  How does one do that without screenshots side-by-side?

Oh God. Someone please fix that Falcon matte behind Han and Lando. Maybe add a dude into the painting behind the Falcon to blend the "Hey, I'm an actor walking in front of a bluescreen" look. Maybe have him working on that B-Wing cockpit in the background? I really dislike it when Lando starts walking toward it.

Yeah, I have to say that that matte is pretty sad.  Its really sad when you think that the only scene with the full-sized Falcon ended up on the cutting room floor, and the only times we see it are either model shots or paintings with no life or true dimension for them.  I do hope that Ady can get the models to redo these shots.

It's all your work guys, I just write it down. :-)

Thanks to Darth Solo I came into possession of the mattes released in the ScreenThemes set.  Using Photoshop CS3's Photomerge and some editing of my own, I have managed to show how much more (or less) of the matte we gain from these files. (mattes are red tinted for clarity)

I'm not sure how much we'd gain vs the HD images, but creative editors can do some pans and such, for example on the walker.  Barring Vaderios and Venal recreating each matte from scratch, which would be the perfect plan.

Signature update problem

Tried the same thing and while it let me update it, it showed up as:

A New Hope: Revisited <a href="http://wp.me/Pr3Gu-5q">Change List</a> (make sure I didn't miss anything!)
A New Hope: Revisited Visual Comparison (<a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/doubleofive/ANHRVisualComparisonPart1">Part 1</a>) (<a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/doubleofive/ANHRVisualComparisonPart2">Part 2</a>)
Empire: Revisited Final Trailer <a href="

which not only didn't show up correctly, but cut off half of them.  I'm going to the WYSIWYG editor to see if I can fix it from there.

You can't honestly expect them to show something like a vote from a Senate that big?

Actually that's exactly the kind of thing we have come to expect from Lucas LOL.

Well I don't know about just a vote on it's own being shown, but if the sequence consisted of all the senator's pods going up, them voting, and then showing their pods landing back in place, without cuts. Every single pod, of course.

Then I expect Lucas would have leapt at any chacne to cram it in the film.

"Now this is senate voting!"

One possible solution is to pretty much remove the Sarlacc entirely in either of it's current forms.

When we see it it's either in isolation or framed in by sets.

Once in a while there is a live action element that crosses the field of the Sarlacc in either it's physical set or CGI forms but they could be isolated for later use.

A redesigned physical model could be built and dropped into the space, it needn't be life sized, the Sarlacc isn't as huge as the sand worms in Dune so scaling down the sand isn't as much of an issue as it was for that movie. Though the bigger the model the better the effect (I'm not trying to underplay how difficult this would be, designing a model and building it, matching the lighting and reintegrating the live action elements would be a massive undertaking).

So like much of what is being proposed here it's not so much impossible but difficult.

For me part of the problem is the written ambition of the script doesn't match the resources available on the location and that's something that can only be augmented with CGI in a limited way.

Stuck with the footage as it was originally framed I think the beak and extra tentacles was as much as they could do back in 1997 (they couldn't move the creature so they added parts to it and animated those).

Threepio in the script describes Carkoon as a pit and the nesting place of the Sarlacc but the location is more of a dent in the sand.

Ideally the pit should be more rocky (so sand doesn't fall in it as much) and when the barge first turns up it would be great if the Sarlacc wasn't there and was enticed to the surface by the sound of the party arriving.

It would be visually much more interesting to see a giant Lovecraftian sand/sea monster heaving it's way up a stony pit than just having a sand crater with a sexually worrying mouth already hanging open in it.

Star Wars is always at it's best when it takes the visual language of one cinematic genre and turns it on it's side.

The sequence was meant to evoke images from maritime adventures (pirate ships, sea monsters, walking the plank etc) but it's a little too conservative with it's references so it would help to revisit some of those films and see what works and try and figure out what can be put into the existing footage in a convincing way.

Angel's mockups show the potential of shifting the live action elements around to compose much more interesting shots.

As with so much in ROTJ the problem isn't so much the story but the presentation not doing the story justice.

I love the bolded idea. Well, I love them all, but this one seems to be something the COULD be done by covering it in the shots until Luke looks over the edge and the beak pops out of the sand.
