It sounds like I'll feel about this like I did about Animatrix and Gotham Knight: mostly meh, but worth watching once.

If TMP is to match up more with the OS another big problem is the shuttle bay which is much bigger than the one in the OS (it seems to take up almost all of the ship under the saucer and is on a totally different scale).
It doesn't match up to the more true to the OS shuttle bay we see in TFF (perhaps it may be possible to take the design ethos and colour scheme of TMP and overlay it onto the shuttle bay from TFF).
One matte, easily replaced or eliminated completely! Unless I'm not remembering clearly and there's another shot of it.

I say we re-fit the sucker from top to bottom if possible (even if it takes 18 months). If we rush it, it will look that way. But I am willing to put my heart into this. It's something I always wanted to do, and as I was doing the Special Longer Version I kept having ideas for a new version. This needs to be radically different then the directors vision. The core story will have to be left much the same, but how we get that plot told is open for any creative changes. I have yet to see the Adywan versions, but from what I have read about them, that is the direction I think we should take. I just got some new software (Adobe CS4), and would like to train up on it with this project. My friend is all up for doing some radical effects too. We don't want campy or jarring, we want classy and respectful.
Great to hear!
I love how you mention that this needs to be more like an episode of TOS, not the 2001-esque drone it is now. I did read somewhere that they deliberately avoided battle scenes to make it as different as possible from Star Wars, but it will be nice to have an option to watch something a bit lighter.
So, how far are you planning on going with this edit, FF? Are we talking Adywan "tear everything apart and put it back together" level effects-wise? There are enough high-quality 3D models of Star Trek ships that anything is truly possible! I'm afraid that I'm putting too much faith in our own efforts, but I'd love to watch something that's almost like watching an all-new movie!
Anyway, here's my ROUGH mockup (less quality than my normal mockups, believe it or not) of my vision of Rec Deck Into Starfleet Command:

I added the window where I mentioned, and tried to recolor the walls to be farther from the TMP Enterprise interior and closer to the walls in the courtroom in TVH. It needs a little more color, the wall with the screen I think needs to be flat and it needs to cover the area with the pictures of the Enterprises. Maybe update the UFP logo, or replace it with a Starfleet Command logo?
I'm going to Chesapeake this week on a business trip, wanted to see if anyone from the boards here lived nearby and wanted to hang out sometime.
I appreciate Johnny coming in with errors and fixes right off the bat! As Adywan has proven, the more people suggesting and mocking up, the better the end result.
I like the idea of maybe using the BoP from Enterprise for the opening. Recolor the purple cloud blue, maybe show that the closer V'ger gets to Earth the less "cloud cover" it has. I'm not sure if the 100% CGI will look right in this edit, but we really don't know how well the rest of the effects will be cleaned up by FF. Just trying to minimize the matte lines would go a LONG way is making the effects look better. The bottom D7 on my DVD cover had a matte line probably 20-30 pixels thick (in the HD image I was using from TrekCore)!
In the Rec Deck into Starfleet Command images, I was thinking the thing that would most obviously change something from being in the middle of a ship to a building on the ground would be windows. Maybe have that grey box to the left of frame be a slightly darkened (so that we don't have to worry about additional lighting sources) view of the establishing shot from TVH (just the section with the Golden Gate Bridge; as you know, wherever you go in San Fransisco, the Golden Gate Bridge is visible. Just like the Eiffel Tower in Paris. Movie rules.)
I decided this morning what my ultimate goal with this is: to have my dad enjoy this edit. My dad loves Star Trek, but hates TMP. I've tried to tell him that the DE fixes a lot of the boredom problem, but I don't think I've convinced him. I'd love to take this edit to his house and be able to say that I helped make an edit I knew he'd enjoy.
Dark Lord of Comparisons here, coming at you with my CGI/Puppet Yoda image:

After making this image a few months ago, I decided that I do like the design of the CGI Yoda for the most part. It really looks like they have the same bone structure, just that in the OT he's malnourished and a bit more frail. His cheeks are sunken in, etc. The CGI Yoda reminds me of baby pictures, where your face is round and your bone structure isn't all that noticeable, while Puppet Yoda isn't as well fed and getting well up there in years.
Really, this whole conversation is neither here nor there, I just had to share my comparison because that's my thing. The only thing I really feel bad about is having to have TPM Puppet Yoda on the picture. No one needs to see that. ;-)

So... Tuesday's episode:
Who was the kid?
Beats me. Spirit of Jacob as a kid to throw us off?
Whose list was on the cave ceiling?
MIB said Jacob's.
Do the names have The Numbers next to them... or do the numbers have The Names next to them?
ooooo, good point.
Who wants to see a spin-off show about Locke and Ben as history teachers?
A modern Odd Couple. Genius!
If the alt2004 is "course-correcting" as we watch it... is it possible that like Desmond who was on the plane and then off of it again- that Locke actually DID go on the Walkabout when he was telling Boone about it and then as the plane landed (and Desmond had disappeared) that his legs stopped working, he needed the wheelchair, and he, at that point, didn't go on the walkabout.
Whoa, that would prove interesting.
If Cooper didn't push him out the window to cause his back injury/paralyzation... what did?
Car crash?
Is the alt2004 timeline different not only because of the bomb, but did Jacob not touch the Losties in that timeline? Is that why Locke is happy, Hugo is lucky, Kate didn't kill her father, and Sawyer (potentially) is not a Con man?
It seems that way, but did Jacob meet with Hurley before he gave him the guitar case in 2007? I can't remember. Because Hurley was WAY unlucky before then.
(Who wants to see a spin-off show where every week Sawyer tries to Con Hurley out of his millions, but is foiled until the next week?)
Another genius idea! You should work for ABC!
If the Valenzetti equation is about manipulating the "variables" (4 8 15 16 23 42) to prevent the end of the world, does the number next to the names in the cave mean that those 6 people are the actual "variables" that must be manipulated to prevent the end of the world? Without Jacob's touch, are those people unmanipulated and will the alt2004 timeline end with the end of the world?
Makes perfect sense to me. There is plenty of manipulation going on with those characters. Most of it by the Smoke Monster, oddly enough.
I had a crazy day at work today (IT, US Military Contractor). All kinds of calls and problems. I was stressed this morning, but got over it and by the end of the day I was laughing at the problems. Server losing 3 GB of memory and restarts every time I try to log in? Hilarious!

They fit in better with the general beigeness (though the one on the end could do with alteration to match the rest).
Right, and I'm sure we can find a hundred line drawings of the original Enterprise to fill that spot.
Couldn't get the picture from Archer's ready room to look like the ones on the Rec Deck, so I just replaced all of the pictures for this mockup:

Speaking of the Rec Deck, are you keeping the scene with Decker and the Ilia probe? The idea of adding a picture of the NX-01 to the historical display has been around for a while. ;)
I would very much like to include stuff such as that. What if we could have a photo of the new 2009 movie Enterprise as well? I was never a fan of the Enterprise show, but can understand the desire to want to update that historical photo on the rec deck.
I'm all about adding the Enterprise Enterprise to the Rec Deck. In fact, they were thinking about doing that in the DE. However, how could we justify adding an alternate timeline Enterprise? It would be like adding the Mirror Universe ISS Enterprise...
4.7 GB is the DVD-5, or as much as a single layer DVD will fit. It's just the right size for that version.
IV is finished, V is in progress.

Nooooooooooooo!
DVD-5 and DVD-9 are single layer and dual layer DVDs respectively. The movies are 99.9% the same, but the DVD-9 come with the bonus features, etc.

I absolutely love those logos. Great work. They keep with the Episode X look, but also keep a certain retro look as well.
Yes, I love them too!
Check out these comparison I made between deg's TOS.5 model and the model they used in TMP:DE:

I'll make a top down version later.

How do you make these things sharper? (and I know it's not just the "sharpen" tool cos that causes all kinds of other problems)
It's awesome! I mean I'm good at photoshop but making things sharper and making it look GOOD has always eluded me other than using A LOT of liquify and moving lines individually... Please let me know, I have personal pics I'd love to sharpen. lol
Strangely enough, all he does is run the default Sharpen operation a couple times. We got his secret a month or so ago. The picture has to be clear to get that much clearer, fuzzy pictures will always look off.
Figured out another lead on a more modern Enterprise:
http://deg3d.biz/splash_TOS.5_E/TOS.5_E.html
deg is a good guy, seen him around the VFX blogs I follow. I asked him if he would be willing to throw something together for us using his TOS.5 model. It's his vision of a post-TOS/pre-TMP Enterprise, self lit, very detailed. I really just want a better mockup to put on the Blueprints page.

I have a few of the forums bookmarked that I like to open as tabs, but fairly often, I'll be not logged in on the second one. Is this some kind of record locking problem with two pages trying to access my profile at the same time?
I've also had it happen while opening topics as tabs.
DE
I've never had this problem. I use Firefox 3.6 currently, but I've opened a half dozen pages in tabs on IE8 also, along with Firefox 3.5. What do you use, DE?

Could the viewscreens on the bridge stations have some moving graphics added? (As was done with the Defiant on Enterprise.) Maybe a graphic timer counting down to shutdown of life support and other systems.
I think the moving graphics are a good idea, but after seeing Star Trek III, any countdown on the bridge monitors is going to make me think 0-0-0 DESTRUCT
Alright, I'm not sure I'll ever be 100% happy with it, but here is my cover for the FFE:

Since who knows how long/expansive, this edit will get, I'm sure it won't be the final version. It needs text anyway.

I love the inspection scene because it's Kirk's love scene.
It's kind of erotic too (he gently caresses her curves and then...ahem...enters her).
All of a sudden, I'm not so sure I like that scene anymore. ;-)
I'm glad Bingo and Ziz came along, I'm way too excited about this edit to be one of only a few contributors. I'm going to try to finish my DVD cover/poster, then I will reveal it to the world!
I like the idea of doing something about the bridge, I'm sure there's something on that bridge that makes it "obvious" its the second season bridge (as opposed to the third) anyway. I think maybe turning off the screens at the very least would help. No lights on but the overhead. Kirk's last look at his ship before they remake her. I wish we had a shot of him leaving the bridge empty, and the lights could turn off row by row after the door shuts behind him...
The relationship between Kirk and the Enterprise is one of my favorite aspects of the show. I wish we could cut the inspection pod scene out, but leave the shot of Kirk with the E reflected in the window. That shot is one of the defining shots of Kirk to me, showing that he loves his ship even though everything about her is changed.

Batman Returns is my least favourite. It's sort of too serious for a silly take on Batman and too silly for a serious take on Batman. The Shumacher films are mostly worthless, but they're consistent.
Two words: Christopher. Walken. All of your arguments are therefore invalid.
