Ideas and Suggestions for :Star Trek The Motion Picture (True Fan Edit)
Time

Alright, I went through some of the movie mistakes and picked out a few for examples:

The transport doesn't cast a shadow on the E, even though it is lit by the spotlight.

As the transport nears the dock, the red circles show that the interior there jumps down just before the shot is done.  The yellow circle shows a guy whose head seems really big in comparison with the size of the doors.

This is one I spotted myself just watching the movie once.  The starfield remains static as Spock's shuttle approaches, but the angle of ship moves, and the stars move on top of the nacelle!

I just now realized that this sequence of dull flipping shuttles won't be in the FFE, so nevermind.  It's still upsetting that they didn't catch that in the DE.

By the way, sometimes the nacelles glow a little blue, other times they're dark.  Does this correspond with the yellow/blue deflector dish, signifying the warp drive being on or off?  I think that for the FFE, the deflector should always be blue and the nacelles dark.  Seems to be the way it is with all of the other movies, am I right?  (Random images at TrekCore show that it is the case).  Maybe have the yellow deflector in drydock, but blue from the point she's turned on.

One could put a few frames of Borg imagery into Spock's mindmeld with V'Ger?

A lovely idea, maybe only 1 frame even, just as a treat to us.

I saw the Enterprise episode "Unexpected" on SciFi today, and there is a nice Klingon D7 lookalike in it. The engine nacelles have a blue glow though.

That's the problem with using any of the shots from TUD or "Flashback".  After TMP, all of the Klingon cruisers have glowing engines.

Here is another crazy idea I had last night. Decker should have some personal effects in the captain's quarters to make them look less sterile.  (Presuming Kirk gets them temporarily, and Decker has not had time to remove anything yet.) A picture of his father, the late Commodore Decker, would be a nice touch.

Matt Decker doesn't look his best in "The Doomsday Machine", but maybe a headshot of clean shaven, happy William Windom could be put into a TOS uniform?

That is a crazy idea, but it just might work.  I'm sure we can make Commodore Decker, therefore making the connection canon!  I've always wanted to do one of those fake family photos you see in movies....

Love this line so much, I've added it to my sig.

BTW, good to hear from you Ady.  Any day I log on here and see you've posted with any sort of update is a welcome surprise.  Hope you're doing okay, and that taking care of your mum's affairs isn't too stressful.

Aw, my first sig quote!  Thanks cor, anything I can do to brighten people's days is great.

And yes, Ady, its great to hear from you.  I always look forward to your long posts full of quotes and rebuttals.  We try to answer the questions we know so you don't have to keep repeating yourself, but its nice to have your confirmation.

I don't get that, surely V'ger would have stored Nero, his crew and his ship in the same fashion as the Klingons and the Starfleet vessels thus making for a much shorter Star Trek 11?

My personal take on the Borg was that V'ger sent a final message back to the machine planet (via the Black Hole therefore backwards in time) telling them of the benefits of merging carbon units with machines only to have the message taken too literally, pretty close to the explanation given in the wee animation there.

Other comics establish that Nero's ship was constructed using tamed future Borg technology, therefore his ship would probably been seen as a friendly to V'ger.

Neither here nor there, unless the FFE V'ger has stuff from alternate universes. ;-)

I like your explanation that the machines should merge with carbon units and they took it literally!  LOL

Random Thoughts
Time

Every time I turn the HDTV in my hotel room, I have to set it to let the program decide what ratio to use so everyone doesn't look fat (they apparently upgraded the TVs but not the cable).  Every time I turn it back on it resets back to stretch, even though it remembers what channel I was watching.  Is this something with TVs in hotel rooms, or should I avoid buying an LG 32LC50C for fear of wanting to THROW IT OUT THE WINDOW ONTO ALL OF THE CARS PARKED BELOW ME?!

Wingreen is staying and Morrison's voice will be altered for the PT. That's one of the 'written in stone' audio choices for the Revisited series, and there are no plans for a purist version of ESB:R.

What the buckethead says is the truth.  I'm so excited to only have ONE version of ESBR, instead of the 4 different ANHRs (not including the NTSC/PAL differences).

ANHR has:

XVID AVI which is a different version from the
DVD5 (PAL/NTSC) which is a different version from the
DVD9 (PAL/NTSC) which is a different version from the
PURIST DVD5 NTSC.

ESBR will have:

DVD9 (PAL/NTSC) which will be the same as the
AVCHD (playable in most Blu-ray players)

AND THAT'S IT!

Besides, putting Wingreen's voice back in would be a simple fix to do for the individuals who want to have it.

Actually he just officially retired this month, believe it or not.  But he sat out all last year and played very little the few years prior.

Thanks for the offer oh-oh-5.  I'll keep you in mind if we end up short on road kill ;-)

Wow, I was totally joking about Frank Thomas.  Man, you can play baseball forever!

I would join, but I have 0 interest in baseball, and I played fantasy football once, where I never logged in after the draft.  I think I'd be a bit better at football since I understand it a bit more and know some of the players...

But seriously, if you need another body to beat the living crap out of, I can try it.

OH, and one time we did one of those college basketball finals tree things, and I won the award for not getting a single one right!

I should've been more specific. I meant to say that Vader's voice needs to sound like James Earl Jones for the "Apology accepted, Captain Needa." line. The line as we've all heard it sounds like an Ian McDirmid sound-alike (to me, anyway).

Not sure what you're saying, man.  You think that line sounds like the Emperor?  That's odd, but everyone's ears are different.  Maybe with the 4% speedup of PAL?

Since we don't see the beaming very often (especially since we're cutting the accident) and this is the only movie where you can see the tube-like confinement beam, I say we try to redo the beaming altogether, make it match the rest of the TOS movies.  I'm thinking about watching TMP tonight, but I may just watch the beaming to see if we can do something like that...

UPDATE: Watched the bits, we've got Kirk beaming into the office complex and McCoy onto the Enterprise.  I think there's enough there that we can make new blank background plates and cut out the shapes of the characters to let us do a new transporter effect.  I'm bored on business travel this week, I'll take a crack at new background plates tonight using the HD images from TrekCore, the greatest site for fan editors ever.

If TMP is to match up more with the OS another big problem is the shuttle bay which is much bigger than the one in the OS (it seems to take up almost all of the ship under the saucer and is on a totally different scale).

It doesn't match up to the more true to the OS shuttle bay we see in TFF (perhaps it may be possible to take the design ethos and colour scheme of TMP and overlay it onto the shuttle bay from TFF).

One matte, easily replaced or eliminated completely!  Unless I'm not remembering clearly and there's another shot of it.

I say we re-fit the sucker from top to bottom if possible (even if it takes 18 months). If we rush it, it will look that way. But I am willing to put my heart into this. It's something I always wanted to do, and as I was doing the Special Longer Version I kept having ideas for a new version. This needs to be radically different then the directors vision. The core story will have to be left much the same, but how we get that plot told is open for any creative changes. I have yet to see the Adywan versions, but from what I have read about them, that is the direction I think we should take.  I just got some new software (Adobe CS4), and would like to train up on it with this project. My friend is all up for doing some radical effects too. We don't want campy or jarring, we want classy and respectful.

Great to hear!

I love how you mention that this needs to be more like an episode of TOS, not the 2001-esque drone it is now.  I did read somewhere that they deliberately avoided battle scenes to make it as different as possible from Star Wars, but it will be nice to have an option to watch something a bit lighter.

So, how far are you planning on going with this edit, FF?  Are we talking Adywan "tear everything apart and put it back together" level effects-wise?  There are enough high-quality 3D models of Star Trek ships that anything is truly possible!  I'm afraid that I'm putting too much faith in our own efforts, but I'd love to watch something that's almost like watching an all-new movie!

Anyway, here's my ROUGH mockup (less quality than my normal mockups, believe it or not) of my vision of Rec Deck Into Starfleet Command:

I added the window where I mentioned, and tried to recolor the walls to be farther from the TMP Enterprise interior and closer to the walls in the courtroom in TVH.  It needs a little more color, the wall with the screen I think needs to be flat and it needs to cover the area with the pictures of the Enterprises.  Maybe update the UFP logo, or replace it with a Starfleet Command logo?

I appreciate Johnny coming in with errors and fixes right off the bat!  As Adywan has proven, the more people suggesting and mocking up, the better the end result.

I like the idea of maybe using the BoP from Enterprise for the opening.  Recolor the purple cloud blue, maybe show that the closer V'ger gets to Earth the less "cloud cover" it has.  I'm not sure if the 100% CGI will look right in this edit, but we really don't know how well the rest of the effects will be cleaned up by FF.  Just trying to minimize the matte lines would go a LONG way is making the effects look better.  The bottom D7 on my DVD cover had a matte line probably 20-30 pixels thick (in the HD image I was using from TrekCore)!

In the Rec Deck into Starfleet Command images, I was thinking the thing that would most obviously change something from being in the middle of a ship to a building on the ground would be windows.  Maybe have that grey box to the left of frame be a slightly darkened (so that we don't have to worry about additional lighting sources) view of the establishing shot from TVH (just the section with the Golden Gate Bridge; as you know, wherever you go in San Fransisco, the Golden Gate Bridge is visible. Just like the Eiffel Tower in Paris.  Movie rules.)

I decided this morning what my ultimate goal with this is: to have my dad enjoy this edit.  My dad loves Star Trek, but hates TMP.  I've tried to tell him that the DE fixes a lot of the boredom problem, but I don't think I've convinced him.  I'd love to take this edit to his house and be able to say that I helped make an edit I knew he'd enjoy.
