Well like i said i am a total noob about Star Trek..

Johnny pointed me the trek site that had HD snapshots..

My first reaction to the matte shots was: Oh my.. Is this for real? are they look so painted in the movie?

So considering that it might be a challenge for me..

But id like to know how radical FF will be in this edit..

Here's a short intro to the drama that is The Motion Picture.  Originally it was going to be the pilot for a new TV series.  But after Star Wars came out, they decided to rush it into a film production.  It was given a release date, but it wasn't enough time to tweak the effects and pacing.  The director saw the final cut in the theaters at the premier in 1979.

When they released it to home video in the 1980's, they used the TV version, which had deleted scenes put back in with even less effects work done, some even having entire backstages visible behind the actors!

When they were going to release it on DVD in the early 2000's, it was finally decided that they should finish their twenty year old movie.  The director was brought back in with an effects team to fix the worst mattes (the planet Vulcan is night in the original mattes, but the actors are obviously in day, etc.) and create new effects, but nothing that couldn't have been done using the technology in 1979.  It was a "if they really had the time originally" edit.  The problem was that Paramount didn't think ahead and only had the new effects rendered at DVD quality.

So when it came time for the Blu-ray last year, the only version of the film they had at HD quality was the original theatrical version, which they scanned in and released.  It's like the opposite of Star Wars.  They didn't future-proof the Special Edition, so they had to release the Original Unaltered Version on Blu-ray!

So before you get too far into freaking out about the mattes, go to the DVD screenshot area of TrekCore.  That's the version that FanFiltration is editing from and it has several better mattes (but they still might need a touch from the Angel!)

If I can't find one, I'll try making a visual comp between the Theatrical Blu-ray and the Director's Cut DVD, as it is my "thing".

ALSO: This is the only alternate version of the TMP theme I have.  LOL

But do you have any idea how hard they are to pull off convincingly?  I'm not talking about creating the shot - I'm talking about the actual flying.  Forget space camera placement and all that jazz, 'cause the real skill is in piloting that ship as close as you can to the camera without taking out either the camera itself or the crew.

Trust me on this, when you've done one successful flyby, you'll want to do 'em over and over again.

I forgot to say that this is example number 10000 by Ric on how to be a successful sock.  I LOLed.

I love the Giacchino version of the TOS theme, but I think its too off from the rest of TMP.  Also, the main theme is repeated in TMP, so replacing it at the beginning would make it "re-emerge later" in the same movie!  LOL

RE: Johnny: RE: The Prologue: are you suggesting we replace the Road Show intro starfield with the TOS footage?  Maybe in a shortened version, as I doubt we can show 3 minutes of TOS and not have people recognize it.  I do like the idea of the prologue coming where the Road Show intro does, before the Paramount logo even...

Interested to hear your recreation of the old music with the recent cues.

I wouldn't ask you to do that for me for mockups, but maybe if FF doesn't have access to them for the final version.

EDIT: Speaking of the intro, I like the idea of using the opening of the series theme (you know, the part that the captain talks over) during the new footage, either repeated or stretched out.  I love that music, and feel that it needs to be used more in the movies.  We could even start out with the TOS version, and move into the TNG version to fit better with the existing TMP credits.

EDIT2: Might as well let you know what episodes will eventually need to be digitized:

  • Amok Time (Spock brooding in his quarters with his harp)
  • The Omega Glory (Shots of the empty hallways, engineering, and sickbay)
  • This Side of Paradise (Shot of Kirk walking onto the empty bridge, shot of people lined up to use the transporter, shot of Kirk packing his suitcase, maybe shot of Uhura leaving Kirk on the bridge earlier in the episode)
  • Tomorrow is Yesterday (Shot of Enterprise in orbit around Earth, the one without the moon since you can see the stars THROUGH the moon they just pasted into the second identical shot)

I won't say that I think the moon landing was faked, but I'm not saying I don't think it might not have been. ;-)

It's super convenient that JFK says, without having a space program at all "we're going to put a man on the moon by the end of this decade" and 6 months before the end of the decade we have one.  And only something like 12 people have been there, all Americans...

I honestly don't believe any of this, I just like to point out these things.

And here I was thinking this morning, "At least BSG had a better ending season." ;-P  The new question/answer ratio needs to go up DRAMATICALLY in these last 10 episodes.

So, I'm still not feeling it.  The on-Island stuff is OK, but the flash-sideways stuff brings up too many new questions/storylines that they have no time to resolve them all.  I'm very eager to see how it all ends without disappointing us all.

I'm still working on the work print. I'm just trying to trim and pace the film with all the footage that is in TMP now. After I do that, you guys take a look and tell me what we should replace with these new effects and footage from outside sources. Then I'll do another work print with all the new ideas and footage we all contribute, and then do the same thing again and again till we have a great project we all like. I know we are going to replace the first attack, so I am going to just mark that area of the film with a place card marker that says Missing Scene or something. Or, I will just use the scene as is with little modifications that you can disregard, as they will be replaced later on.

"I love this plan! I'm excited to be a part of it!"  Seriously, this is the part I love about fan edits, especially the attitude of most of the editors here.  We can work together to make an edit we all can enjoy.  It seems like we're on the same page for the most part, so we shouldn't have too many conflicts of interest.  And we have one veto vote with you, so what you say goes.

Have you put much thought into the prolgue at the moment? I dig the TOS montage idea but don't personally have access to any of that stuff atm.

Anybody working on prologue concepts?

I would, but I only have TOS on Blu-ray and no way to rip it.

I was kind of disappointed that "SUNdown" wasn't about Sun (while "LOCKdown" was about Locke).  Really doesn't matter.

Interesting that the lines have been drawn, and who is on each side.

On one side we have:

ZombieLocke/Smokie/Esau/Man in Black/The Man Outside
Sawyer (Candidate 15)
Claire
Sayid (Candidate 16)
Kate?

On The Others side:

Jack (Candidate 23)
Hurley (Candidate 8)
The Kwans (Candidates 42)
Ben
Lapedius

Basically, all of the characters I don't care about are on the Evil side, and all of the characters I like are on the Good side.  Yay for me!

Perhaps you could add a few Klingons wearing the Star Trek 11 leather masks to hide the shame of their as yet uncured Terran look (once a cure was found it may have taken a while for everyone to be fixed and maybe some could never be fully cured).

Reading the above has just jared something in my memory. I know this has nothing to do with our edit, but here is a little bit of Trek trivia for all of you.

Did you know that In Star Trek III,  the Klingon woman Valkris wore a leather mask? All shots of the leather mask had been edited out before the film premiered.  There are production photos of her with it on. I think the movie program book has it.  She removes the mask just as she makes contact with Kruge. You can see the bottom of it when she is standing behind the freighter crewmen, and asking them to open communications.

I've seen this somehow.  Maybe in my "read along" copy of Star Trek III?  I remembering comparing the story to the movie when I was small, and wondering why Kirk didn't say "you Klingon bastards" in the story book.  Didn't realize it was a bad word, I guess.

I will say that as much as I am impressed with and love the new shot...there is a part of me that likes the simple hard cuts of the original.

The PT is full of flyby shots just like this. In fact, I believe there are no flyby shots that are made up of two different shots (one shot with a ship coming up towards the camera and the next shot with the ship moving away).

I'm not saying I don't like the new type of shot. I'm not saying the shot can't be effective. In fact, there are some I really like...it's just something I noticed in the PT specifically and I thought it was over used, IMHO.

Again, I love what Ady did with the shot. Not trying to start anything.  :D

<hesitant> It's easier to add shots like this to the OT than take away shots like this in the prequels? </hesitant>

I know what you're saying SSWR, but I love flybys.  And it doesn't stand out like the ones ILM did in the SEs.  I think its short and subtle.  Now, if Ady redid EVERY shot like this, I'd have a problem...

Eject? they have no oxygen masks.

TIE pilots have them but their fighters explode as soon as they're hit.

so you got Imperials that could survive in space but really never have the opportunity to eject and the Rebels don't even have masks for it

and even in ROTS you had those dumbass clone pilots with rebreathers connected to an open faced helmet

I think the TIE pilots have masks because they don't have life support in their ships at all.  Rogue Leader can back me up on that.

Design wise, you can't see their faces because they're EVIL, but that's beside the point.

Nice to know that Angel is watching.  What we really need is a matte for the following:

FanFiltration said:

Do you think you can make two new matte painting type mock-up shots for around the view screen? We only need to change the surroundings in the above two camera angles. I want it to look a bit more like it was Star Fleet HQ, and not the Enterprise rec deck. Also needs to be livened up a bit. A bit to boring, and 1970's looking. Just don't want this room to match the Decker/Ilia rec deck scenes later in the film too much. What do you guys think?

We really just need a different shaped viewscreen and walls, as this room is used later in the movie.  TrekCore has HD shots you could base them on.

I'd love to see the comparison shot.  I love the new one, but I'm very curious to see how it compares to the old.

Me to the rescue!  Check this space later for a comp.

EDIT: It may not look like much, but its got it where it counts:

You can "View Image" for a teensy bit bigger version.  It's not frame-by-frame exact by any means, just gives you a general idea.

Gibberish?  Lifting dialog?  My vote is to put another call out and re-record dialog in Klingon!  Certainly we can find someone on BBS or somewhere who knows enough to give us dialog to fit whatever we want.  It's the most spoken fictional language in history!

I like the proof of concept, maybe a little less "inside the ship".  It'd be awesome to have just a ship entering the cloud and getting blasted, but that would be hard to do with with visuals we have.

Can't wait to see your rough cuts, FF!

Right, it sounds like an episode, but not like the rest of the movies.  And my goal was to avoid the pretentiousness, which "Thy" will just bring more of.  And there's already a Motion Picture edit called "Phase II: In Thy Image" and even a Star Trek V edit called "Phase 2: In Thy Image".  In fact, they are the only two Star Trek movie edits on Fanedit.org besides Kirkless Generations!  LOL

From FF's list, "The Human Adventure" could work.  I've never really understood the tagline, but it might fit.  "The Continuing Voyage" isn't bad as it is descriptive and even a little spoilery as V'ger could be the voyager.  We do already have a movie with "Voyage" in the title, but I still kind of like it.

I still like my idea though. ;-)  I'll try to mock up a title on the way home.  Plenty of flight time.
