But Ilia does use alien powers, at least in the Director's Edition. She uses her powers to relief Chekov of his pain after being electrocuted. And who knows? Maybe Ilia telling Kirk about her oath was her way of stating to him "Not going to happen" in a professional manner. She doesn't really have a friendly expression going on when she says it to his face!

It would be a nice way of telling the Admiral that. ;-)

And Chekov can just get a hypospray and feel better.  I think that's what FF is going for.

AltUhura's credentials do explain why she is promoted from cadet to bridge officer so fast, admittedly better than the explanation for AltKirk.  I'm saying if AltUhura had magic alien powers that she never uses and was replaced by a robot halfway through the movie then vanishes at the end, sure, we can cut it out.  AltUhura has a few movies left in her for those to be justified.

I think it has to do with the fact that it doesn't really matter and never comes up again.  The celibacy oath seems like something left over from when Ilia was going to be a major character on a TV series.  Her having to take this oath and being in love with Decker would have made for great television.  However, she doesn't live long enough in the movie for her oath to have made a difference.  It's a plot point that goes nowhere.

If its cut, she goes from being a weird-talking alien in love with Decker but who is forbidden by oath to do anything about it to being a weird-talking alien in love with Decker who freaking left her on Delta IV and she's mad about it.  In the end, I think the movie might be better without taking on this what would have been interesting in a full TV series, but not important to a character who dies after 15 minutes of real screentime.

But that's just me, and like I said yesterday, I have no real attachment to this movie.  I just don't think it needs to be there.  The more dialog that we can cut, the better.

It took a week to get my new laptop tuned up. I'll be starting to edit again this weekend.  I'm going to need some advice for the Ilia intro scene. I've got some real tricky moments that I need some feedback on.  All that garbage about her oath of celibacy has got to go, but it's just not as simple as cutting a few lines out. I've spent way too much time tweaking this scene, and may have lost all the correct  story telling perspective on how it should play out. It's hard for me to just type out what I am trying to do with it, so script and visual examples are on the way for you to look at.

I have no real strong attachment to this movie and actually watched it with commentaries more times than without.  I think between us, Jeyl with the love, you with the edit, and me with the "cut everything", we can figure out if it works.

It is a bit crap really (perfectly in line with the Imperial policy of making weak points in their plan obvious but still a bit crap).

What if the view was replaced to a balcony overlooking the base proper (it is just a back door and we know there are lots of buildings there).

The Rebels could go down the bunker tunnel but end up in an observation area high in the cliff overlooking the base buildings as seen next to the landing pad.

Or a hanger for ground vehicles and bombers which also stores munitions thus making the Rebels boom go a little further.

I like the way you're thinking.  But if its up on a cliff, you would only be able to see the sky from the angles we see, so that's not very exciting.  A ground hanger would look awesome, but would really be redundant since all of the ships they need would be housed in the DS2 and they'll probably just blow everything up when they leave after completion anyway.

I wish we could keep the current "small building" idea, but explain why EVERYTHING explodes from the couple charges they plant....  Of course, we don't want to explain too much, or we'll be treading into Prequel Lucas territory:

To me, this shot doesn't look very good because of the way the asteroids get zapped. As they are hit, there is a flash of orange "plasma" around each asteroid, then they just vanish. To me, it would look way more realistic if there was a real explosion, even a small one, when hit, followed by the asteroids actually breaking into tons of little bits and pieces, like the asteroid is breaking apart.

Or maybe if the explosion was big enough to completely engulf the asteroids as they are hit. As it stands now, it just looks too fake to me.

Another shot that doesn't look great is right after Han & Leia kiss. An asteroid smashes into the Star Destroyer, and the entire top of the ship seems to disappear upon impact.

This is what I keep poking Angel to do.  He shows all this incredible work, but we never know how he did it or if he would have to work 3 hours on each frame to get the desired effect. ;-)

Nothing says he couldn't have had a guy show up and say "Hey, I'm Red Leader."  Or even (gasp) assumed that the viewer would be smart enough to figure that MAYBE ANAKIN DID THINGS OUTSIDE OF THE FIVE HOURS WE SEE HIM.  Or leave it to the EU to do his dirty work.
