ESB:R will be a mixture of HDTV and Blu-Ray sources, with the Blu-Ray being the main source for the edit. I'm just completing transferring the colour correction to the Blu-Ray and then i'll be reapplying the FX work to the sections that are using the new source.
REALLY?! Interesting!

Thanks none, I was hoping this might get spun off, much too technical for me. ;-)

So, of the Blu-ray changes we know about, I'm missing a shot of the Cloud City furnace (a nice frame I think with Chewie's arm over it, maybe the wipe if if looks reredone), and several of the Ewok eyes. I liked having the choice of frames, but maybe they could be marked by scene, sometimes I get lost in the movies.

Star Wars coming to Blu Ray (UPDATE: August 30 2011, No! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!)
Time

I just found this blog entry I wrote 7 years ago:

Q: Do you pay much attention to fan reactions to your choices?

LUCAS: Not really. The movies are what the movies are. ... The thing about science-fiction fans and "Star Wars" fans is they're very independent-thinking people. They all think outside the box, but they all have very strong ideas about what should happen, and they think it should be their way. Which is fine, except I'm making the movies, so I should have it my way.

(from CNN.com)

This is like George Lucas grabbing our VHS copies of the original trilogy and beating us with them, screaming "Mine!" like some flannelled 6-year old. Come on George. He says that the original trilogy we grew up with was incomplete and that he's "sorry you saw half a completed film and fell in love with it."

Can I love a movie series and hate the person who made it, especially the way he treats it now? I grew up with these films, all I ask for it a decent transfer of what I was perfectly happy with literally my entire life. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate what he's trying to do with Special Edition and the DVD Specialer Edition, I just want a choice.

*gets off of soapbox*
I forgot I got riled up back then too.

The originaltrilogy.com forum provides information about fan projects. Due to the underground nature of this scene, there are no downloads or torrent links posted here. You are expected to search out these projects yourself.

As far as this community is concerned, you should own the official retail release of a fan project's source material if it is possible to do so. Content producers deserve to be compensated, so if you don't own the retail release (if available), you have no business possessing a fan project. This applies equally to fan edits, custom DVDs and restoration projects.

If a project is sourced from an HDTV broadcast, and that movie has subsequently been made available for purchase on Blu-ray Disc, you are expected to own the BD before obtaining the fan project.

The forum administration do not have the resources to police this, so we will presume that all members comply with the above unless told otherwise. Any blatant contravention of the above may result in posts being removed, or in extreme cases member sanctions.

Forum rules now say that you should own the Blu-rays before obtaining a project based on the HD broadcasts. Please bear this in mind.

Yup, I just checked it and that shot is the one with the huge gash right through R2D2, it looks like the tear was held back together with glue. No doubt this would have been replaced for the 1997 with a replica from an alternate source, and this is assuredly the reason for the framing difference.
Do you have an image of the tear?

I may have an answer.

Wasn't that the one shot with that really big negative tear on it? If so, they would have replaced it with a duplicate material, maybe the IP, which might have had slightly tighter framing just from being copied.
Could be the case, but those frames in the GOUT are pretty fucked up by the DVNR, maybe that's why you have the difference, motion trailing.
Looks significantly moved to the right to me.

Wow, this is a huge discovery!

And Harmy, another one for v1.2! It even has an impossible to replicate camera shake that will take you FOREVER to match! ;-)

UPDATE: 97 has the same crop as 04.

Blu-Ray players and AVCHD?

Hi all, I'm kind of new to this format.  What determines what Blu-Ray players can properly play AVCHD burned on DVD R+DL discs?  I have had pretty good luck so far, but I have a friend who says his BR player can't play them?  I've looked on-line a bit but not found any solid information.

Does it have to do with firmware updates? Brands?.  I'm a little confused.

Jason
Mine has an AVCHD logo on it. It also says it in the manual.

Also, that is quite funny reading that Ady's ESB Reconstruction thread now, 005, thanks for the link :-)
I looked for that the other day because I thought I was making it up, but you WERE the "Lord__Vader" guy who came in and said "If you won't make in HD, I will!" and you did and it was amazing.
Ginge, I'm quite sure 005 linked to that to illustrate the "you can do it yourself" point, no to point out Ady's reconstruction. Also I'm pretty sure that you're thinking Revisited, as Ady's reconstruction didn't take any creative  liberties, it was basically the same as Despecialized, only in SD and some of the minor fixes of the kind you ask for left in (like the shadows on Han's shoulders).
Yes, I wanted to point out that some people who complain about this and that end up doing their own version and it working great.
