Something to consider though, it’s not an altogether unlikely an explanation that the people writing these books are as much a fan as we are, and specifically sought out the Legacy clip to use for the book. You could even say that this is the Occam’s razor explanation - the shot from Legacy is arguably the highest quality clean still of that shot out there, which is why it might have been used.

Important to note as well, the writers do not technically work for LFL, they work for Haynes publishing.

The Authors said:

Because Lucasfilm considers the revised version “canon,” I didn’t know whether they’d allow Haynes to use the earlier still frames, but I’m glad that they did, simply because the original version more clearly illustrates the X-wing’s S-foils in operation.

I suppose it is possible that Haynes got permission to use images they just happened to have found. Hell, maybe the authors themselves found it. However, there is a slight color change in the Death Star, which I was taking to mean that the rough Legacy preview on Vimeo had been further tweaked.

If they’re taking screenshots from Vimeo previews for their books, how is that a sign of anything deeper or more troubling? Deeper or more troubling than what? It’s a tie-in book that probably won’t really sell a whole lot to anyone who isn’t already a superfan. What signs are you seeing in the decision by an editor or graphic designer to use a frame from a Vimeo screencap that are so troubling?

If Lucasfilm continues to have to go to fan restorations they found on YouTube over actually restoring the film, then there’s something wrong there. Film history is being ignored because fans posted clips somewhere? What if they accidentally use Revisited or any of the other fan edits that are right next to it online? Why would they know to reference Legacy if they didn’t have Legacy on hand?

I’m the “irresponsible” one in the Twitter thread. I don’t see how LFL could have even accidentally scanned the exact print in the exact way with the exact damage with the exact cleanup. Even if they have their own better scan, THIS book is using Legacy. I didn’t say it was an official project. They are using it as a resource if nothing else.

And if they’re taking screenshots from a Vimeo preview for their books, they’re a hell of a lot worse off than we ever imagined.

I suspect this is probably well known, but something I just read today that the escape pod shot used several times in Spaceballs is actually unused footage shot for Star Wars.

I know there was a bit of talk about the escape pod shot earlier in the thread so thought perhaps this might be worth sharing.

I’ve never heard this before and I’m not sure I believe it. The escape pod shot in ANH is well-known as being the first shot completed, and nothing about the Spaceballs design resembles anything else in Star Wars.

I thought the first completed shot was a Death Star turret firing? Your point stands regardless, of course.

Google says the escape pod was the first shot Lucas actually approved, the rest weren’t good enough. Close enough.

When the shield generator explodes, a piece of shrapnel flies towards the left side of the screen and then bounces back off from the inside of the wall it was housed in.

LOL, it looks like it bounces off the edge of the film frame.

It’d also be nice for the writing on the screen to be rewritten with the “actual” Aurebesh alphabet (which was used for the tractor beam text in the 2004 SE of ANH). As it is now, it’s just gibberish.

But yeah, replacing the naked hand with a glove is a good call.

I’m sure the text will be replaced like Ady did for R2’s readout.

*Alter Vader’s line to say “Your Mother once thought as you do.”

Alright, I don’t agree everything you said, but this one is something I wholeheartedly agree.

As far as I can recall, other than the damned prequels, there isn’t a single mention of Luke and Leia’s mother in OT. Which is kind of weird in a way and it would be really nice have a little mention like this.

I wouldn’t want Vader to say “Padme”, but a line like “Your Mother once thought as you do.” would fit perfectly.

I agree completely. Even if it’s not for ady, it’s a change I’d love to see someone figure out some day.

James Earl Jones has done an audio of the entire bible, I’m sure the phrase “Your Mother” is in there somewhere.

Someone at some time did this.

*If you are adding female rebel pilots, consider re-voicing a stormtrooper, or better yet a biker scout, with a
woman’s voice. I wanted to suggest that for ESB:R but it was too late.

I don’t think the Empire is an “equal opportunity” kinda regime…

I don’t see why not.

Hey Adywan, do you plan on changing Ackbar to look more consistent with The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi?

Adywan has said in the past he wouldn’t be making changes to his trilogy for consistency with the sequels unless he feels like it (like adding the extra bunk to the Falcon in one shot of ESBR).

Complete Comparison of Special Edition Visual Changes
Time

Holy crap, I did Greedo Shot First.

https://twitter.com/StarWarsVisComp/status/1168554173136166913

Frame by frame comparisons, GIF’s, the whole nine yards. I conclude that the “new” shot is based on a wide shot of Han shooting Greedo. They took the clarifying shot Lucas claims didn’t exist in the 70’s and changed it so Greedo shoots (at different times with different effects). It’s a fun read, hopefully.

I mean, the EU figured out 35 years ago that Imperial fighters don’t have hyperdrives because they’re cheaper to produce that way, but the Rebels don’t see their pilots or hardware as expendable. It makes sense. And yes, the whole thing is moot because Adywan already showed X-Wings going to lightspeed, so it’s already canon in Revisited before RotJ.
