It appears to be recreated using the original elements from ANH, not digital.
I’m going to assume any DCP’s are still HD Branch. The use of it for the TROS teaser makes me wonder if Disney can tell the difference.
They only used that for the D23 preview, which only went up online AFAIK and was never sent out to theaters.
It definitely went out to theaters. It played before my IMAX screening of Ad Astra.

Did it have an MPAA card at the front? Are you sure it wasn’t just part of the ads before the actual trailers?
Definitely was one of the actual trailers. I don’t remember if it had the MPAA card but that’s only because at AMC they often don’t put the cards before trailers.
I saw it at a theater where they only play the trailers attached to the “print” (Ford v Ferrari).
And I still don’t believe they knew there was a difference between them at first. And I don’t see why they would hide it until D+ if they did. Early denials from LFL were that it was the same as the Blu-ray, which later changed to the “oh yeah, Lucas made this for the 3D before he left.”
Wait they fixed some things but put back old errors that had previously been corrected? I’m impressed.
No, they RE-fixed errors that were in the 97SE negative that they had fixed in HD, but missed some.

Speaking of, to put us back on topic, has ady said if he’ll be keeping the praxis wave for the explosion? It’s the one added praxis ring that I think actually adds a little something to the effect and energy of the shot (with the Falcon outrunning it being one last thrill). One of the only SE additions I miss a little when I watch the OOT.

It’s ok, according to replies I’ve gotten on Twitter, the guy who made the praxis wave hates the praxis wave. Lucas apparently got the idea while working on RotJ, and liked it so much he made this guy go back to ANH and add them there as one of the last changes before release.

It’s not consistent. Sometimes there’s less on the bottom, sometimes more on the sides, sometimes it’s cropped on all sides from the image we got in HD.
Is it just me or is the image geometry different?
The movies are cropped to 2.39:1 vs the 2.35:1 they’ve been in the HD Branch.
I checked the recolored badges when the Falcon flies at the SD, they’re colored AND the stars aren’t gone thanks to black crush and automated cleanup, so that’s good.
I heard the same rumors in 1997. I don’t believe it’s true at all. Ratings are a joke, I’m not even sure they had to resubmit it to the board.

Yep.
Absolutely. Of course it’s slightly different because it’s a new scan, but it was important enough that they had to crop every one of them again.
All I want is a BTS article on the remaking of the Special Edition. Just some explanation of why and how the 04-11-19 changes happened.

There have been no official explanations of any changes since the old “What Has Changed” articles in 2006.
Hell, they made #maclunkey show a Greedo emoji, but no one has explained what it even means.

It was a series of texts, which I only saw because my blind dog had jumped off the bed and got stuck underneath it, but I appreciated the dramatic take.
According to a member on the Blu-ray forums, the new 4KSE is now making its way to Vudu, albeit in 1080p.
Does anyone own A New Hope On Vudu? I went back to look at my copy to compare to Disney + and behold, they changed the Vudu version to match Disney +.
Holy shit, confirmed. Disney’s Movies Anywhere is still 2015, but Vudu is 2019. Trying iTunes.
The colors are actually pretty close to 4K77. As for the scan, I’m not sure the SE can look better.

That’s exactly what Reliance did, yes. Their restoration started with a new scan of the 1997 negative, and then all the 2011 changes (plus a few more) were applied to it.
I’m becoming convinced through my own brand of research. All of the 04 mistakes are gone. Some weird changes made in 04 are missing (Alderaan slides into position on the DS screen again).
So it’s 2009/10, they were working on the 3D version, presumably in 4K, perhaps hoping to downscale it for the Blu-ray. Maybe recreating all of the 04 effects in 4K was taking longer than expected, so they took the 3D release changes and applied them to the 1080p/2004 master and released it in 2011, finishing the recreated 04 changes in 2012.
This doesn’t explain why they bothered to mess with Greedo for the Blu-ray. Perhaps it’s an earlier draft?

It’s not just the sky that has been changed. The dunes were altered for the SE and they have reverted those back to the '77 version
I noticed this last night too. I didn’t realize it was the original sand though. The sky/sand replacement was 2004.

JEDIT: this would also explain why it doesn’t have the mistakes introduced in 04 (Ben’s purple lightsaber, the glow added without the core, Ghost Luke).
This is just me scrubbing through. Without a copy I can frame step or screenshot, it won’t be everything. But there’s definitely changes / improvements, even though Greedo is somehow worse.
