I haven’t seen Boyhood, but Linklater’s brain must have had just the right amount of hollowing when he made Dazed and Confused, because that is one of the best stoner movies ever made. Not to mention it features some of the most realistic dynamics between high-schoolers ever put on film. And a killer soundtrack. I guess this is a review now…  9/10

Tolkein is just a terrible rambling writer.

Don’t get me wrong, I love the books and have read them all, but the man was just hyper-verbose and had no concept of when to be concise or cut something down.

All correct.

Except for the spelling of the author’s name. I quit halfway through The Two Towers. Twice.

Ghostbusters (2016)
I liked it. I was unfamiliar with the cast, but am now a Kate McKinnon fan; without her the movie would have about half the charm (and most of that half would be from Chris Hemsworth). Not as good or as funny as the original, but considerably better than Ghostbusters 2. The effects were pretty meh, some of the weapons were a bit much and some of the music sucked, but I enjoyed it more than I expected to due to all the haters. Hoping for a sequel!  6/10

I’d probably give it an 8/10 and I don’t remember the music one way or the other, but otherwise I agree with this completely.

McKinnon and Hemsworth were both amazing.

I was pretty close to giving it 7/10. It would be at least 6.5 if I didn’t hate half points. For some reason I’ve been a bit harsher with scores lately. The Shallows probably deserved 7/10 as well.

2003 Clone Wars vs 2008 The Clone Wars
Time

Dumb moments aside, I far prefer Clone Wars in both style and content to the later series. It was the only Clone Wars material (including AOTC and ROTS) that made it feel like there was actually a war going on. The scene/episode where the commando clones are taking out battle droids using only hand signals is the best Star Wars I’ve seen outside the original trilogy. I also never liked Ahsoka; even after she eventually matured and became way less annoying the damage was done.

(In TCW) some of the villains are lackluster when compared to the micro-series. General Grievous is practically the Cobra Commander, because I always see him running away and/or getting his butt handed to him. Also, I felt the stories in TCW were all over the place and didn’t tell that much of a consistent story (at least not until the later seasons). In the micro-series CW, I always thought the villains were a threat as they were ruthless and calculating. Not so much in TCW.

I also agree with this, Ventress was badass and Grievous didn’t seem like the joke he was in other incarnations. They all seemed much scarier villains, including Dooku.  (That bike-jousting guy did suck though).

If you need to B*tch about something... this is the place

I know it’s frowned upon to complain about the software, but…

I miss the “Top” button we had briefly. I’ve nearly posted advice regarding markdown syntax a bunch of times by going to press the lowest button on the page. And don’t even get me started on said syntax’s inability to float images left and all the “captioned” posts rent asunder…

Convincing Casual Fans to Begin with "Star Wars"

I think that most people who remember the Phantom Menace being released still think about Star Wars as separate trilogies, with the original one being the classic films worth watching. It’s the people who grew up with all of the Star Wars movies that will just assume that Episode I is the place to begin.

Not in this particular case. This guy is my age and should have known better, but he was never into Star Wars like folks around here. He even gave me the “they’re trying to reach a new audience” line when I was vilifying George’s digital scribbling and other dehancements. They honestly thought that not starting at Episode I would “make things confusing”.

I’ll make sure to remember ZkinandBonez and OO5’s point about the PT never explaining the Force etc. next time it comes up.
