Hello all, I’ve been on a trip so I haven’t had the chance to work on the Crackle saber but I just returned home a couple days ago and have gotten back to work on it. Here is a very, very early test on Rey vs Kylo in the Force Dyad Lightsaber fight (so early that the entire scene isn’t finished yet lol) but I just wanted to update y’all on progress.

As always, any issues that stick out to y’all, let me know. This is a super early test though so I haven’t really applied any polish to it yet.

Good to have you back! This looks great! Seeing the two crackling sabers in the same shot is selling me even more on the effect you’re doing.

The only issue I spotted while watching on Mobile is when Rey lifts her saber and tells Kylo “You’re lying” the mask used lasts for a couple frames too long and overlaps over Kylo’s face when it cuts to his face.

Any discrepancies between events in the canon material are just a result of the story being told from two different viewpoints. For example, the last arc of The Clone Wars and the Ahsoka novel do not agree on the conversation Ahsoka had with Maul and the circumstances around their encounter. I believe that the events we see on screen are the correct ones, yet the only reason the novel and the show disagree is that Ahsoka doesn’t remember the events correctly in her telling of the story.
This is also why the Novelizations can sometimes disagree since the story is being told by a different in-universe entity than the movie. A history book can’t be 100% correct all the time. It is not protective to freak out over retcons and contradictions. Instead, gather all the information and decide for yourself whos account of the events was most correct.

There should be a proper release of the 1977 Star Wars at this point

Honestly, every time I watch the OT I watch a different version. Sometimes I pop in my Blu-Rays and watch the 2011 cuts, sometimes I watch Despecialized, sometimes I watch Revisited. Sometimes I watch a different version of each, like DE Star Wars, RV Empire, or 2011 ROTJ. The only versions I haven’t watched yet are the D+ versions.

I just finished showing this edit to my Father and he told me that it made the movie 100% better!

My dad saw the original Star Wars when he was 13 in Fresno and he strongly disliked TLJ but after showing him this he enjoyed it so much better.

He loved what was done with the Finn and Rose Crait run and loved how Canto Bight was cut out and he said it made the movie flow so much better since they didn’t take him out of the movie!

He still doesn’t like the story decisions with Poe and Luke but he even admitted that this couldn’t really be helped with editing. Great job guys!

On a different note, Kylo’s new vision when he touches vader’s.

I like the addition of Luke, but I think a different shot, like of him holding the Anakin’s saber in a close up would work better than Kylo stabbing him. Honestly I prefer the one from the earlier workprint. It still works and I can see how Luke is important to Kylo’s journey, but I prefer the other one.

Alright, having compared workpirnt 3 and 4, I have some opinions about the LUTs.

For Exagol they look great, everywhere else they are almost too much. It’s like we swung the pendulum from being too blue to being too red. You can see this especially in Kylo’s face, it almost looks like he’s sunburnt. I wonder what it would look like if the intensity was just brought down slightly. Another issue with the LUTs is that the movie becomes incredibly bright, almost too much.

I think a middle ground between what the movie had and where the LUTs are now would provide a better product.

Or you could show it heal in Ben’s hand when he shrugs. You could do it with the audio and e visual of The crackling could just fade out back to normal.

Or like right before he shrugs.
He pulls the blade out and it’s still crackling, it transitions to normal and the audio is where most of this happens. Some sort of healing sound? Then the knights reaction then the shrug.
