I've always wondered with all the projects out there why there hasn't been more focus on this disc. It's the best looking OUT source there is imo.

I disagree since I think the JSC looks the best, but I definitely think it's worthy of preservation which is why I'm working on it at the moment. :o)

I just watched Althor's new JSC and I have to agree, they're easily the two best sources.

I guess it's probably the color that is the deciding factor for me. It may not be theatrically accurate, but I really like the color on the Technidisc.

So I really look forward to checking out your preservation.

One interesting thing about the Technidisc SWE is that it has baked-in rainbowing. That is, it has rainbowing baked-in to the master that can't be removed via the phase inversion that comb filters rely on.

 Darn =(

This doesn't mean we can't get rid of it. It just means that we have to low-pass filter the chroma which is fine since there's very little effective chroma resolution in the Technidisc SWE master anyway.

I've always wondered with all the projects out there why there hasn't been more focus on this disc. It's the best looking OUT source there is imo.

I guess technical issues you mention, as well as a lot of frame problems I don't really understand(?) must be the reason(s)? I remember msycamore mentioning being unhappy with efforts in trying to deal with the rainbowing problem.

Why are you guys so keen on this release?

I don't mind to reply.

For me, this hits my Star Wars sweet spot.  This was the last release of the movies before the Special Editions took more liberties with the movies.

I'm not interested in a "despecialized" or recreated experience (not knocking the effort that went into creating them).  I want to recall the movies just as I grew up with them and liked them.

I've seen several people state they felt this was the best version (at least at the time) of the laserdisc transfers to DVD.  It has uncompressed sound and a widescreen anamorphic picture.  Other than making the picture anamorphic, it's my understanding this presents the definitive edition laserdiscs just as they appeared.  I own the limited edition 2006 DVDs and watch them from time to time (I prefer them to my Blu-rays).  I look forward to hearing the uncompressed audio on my home theater and watching the anamorphic picture and getting sucked into the movies all over again.

I now have two sons and I want to show them Star Wars as I first saw it and loved it.  I can't speak for everyone, but that's the reason for my interest.

Thanks to all involved in these projects.
May the Force be with you.

I'm totally with you on most of that. Except that this is any kind of definitive release, there are many, many better LD transfers. In fact I would put this one in the lower part of the list. The main reason being the mpeg-2 artifacts and overall low image quality from such a low bitrate. It's hard enough as it is to fit a 2 hour movie on a single layer DVD without using more than 1/3 of the space for audio.

Since this release someone found a LD with a digital transfer of the 1977 stereo mix that is superb. So I wouldn't even give this the top spot for audio quality, though it may have held that honor when it was released?

If you want a very fine LD transfer I would suggest

_,,,^..^,,,_ 's OUT Rules 2.0

It's so much better looking than the old LD transfers, it's not even in the same ballpark. Any fan who hasn't seen it should check it out. It looks even better than any of the GOUT sourced releases imho.

It was upped to a.b.starwars 902 days ago. Unfortunately it is dead at myspleen though his 1.0 release still has seeders. I have not seen 1.0, but he considered 2.0 to be a significant upgrade:

  • a bit more saturation than OUT 1.0 - NO color correction was applied
  • the new sharpen/denoise script is less aggressive than the old one
  • a proper color matrix is used this time for the final release (TV.709)
  • proper levels used; PC -> TV, from captures to release

It really is stunning. I would go so far as to say it is the definitive LD transfer at this point.

It was pretty noticeable to me. I was even kind of lol wtf?! who would do this?
Bit starved MPEG-2 looks terrible imo.

If you can, check out the OUT rules transfer by the guy with the beware cat avatar. Pretty stunning for a LD transfer.

That and msycamore's Technidisc are my favorite LD transfers, and I"ve checked out most of them.

Whatever method _,,,^..^,,,_ the person with the cat avatar uses produces superior results.

His (her?) OUT rules speed corrected transfer of the PAL A New Hope (less DVNR) is the best LD transfer I've seen. I know there was some discussion of what looked like minor scaling issues? It seemed to discourage any further progress, or transfer of Empire. It's unfortunate because the results look really really good to my eyes.

Having matched the colors of Team Negative1's preservation (the video sample) to the GOUT, we can now directly compare it to SRV13:

 Stunning!

The greens issue is weird. In the -1 frame there is too much green behind Vader. In the SR frame there is too much green on the left edge of the frame, but it looks much better behind Vader?

hmmm, bummer :( The GOUT is truly diseased in many ways.

Thanks for clarifying that Zyrother. I appreciate that this isn't actually film grain (which would not bother me) but some kind of digital "grain" from the poor processing / upscaling.

I still look forward to seeing what kind of results can be achieved with the amazing work DrDre is doing here.

A video sample for SRV13 is being processed. Should be finished by the beginning of next week. We can then do a proper comparison. The slow moving grain is much more apparent on my HD-TV than on my laptop. Also the static nature of the grain can't really be seen in a single screenshot.

Is this the same static grain that is so clearly seen on Teamblu's most recent effort? I assumed it was something they had added rather than something they brought out from the GOUT.

I found it quite distracting, it almost seemed like looking at the image through a lace material or something. I would rather watch their V3 release due to it.

Info Wanted: Best ROTJ preservations/reconstructions
Time

Dark Jedi's ROTJ V3 GOUT is quite nice, imo it came out best of the three. I think mainly due to ROTJ GOUT being a better transfer than SW, or ESB.

Part of the reason for what you perceive as a lack of attention is that there are already good ROTJ restorations out there, that and maybe the fact it is widely felt by most SW aficionado's to be the weakest of the trilogy?

Oh, and who cares about the 97 special editions, lol :P

I can understand some younger peoples fondness for them though, as that may be how they were originally exposed to SW? As an older guy who saw SW in the theater and the drive-in I personally don't have much love for the special editions.
