Jesus Christ, care to elaborate Mala? I just can’t comprehend how AOTC is a superior film.
Just got back from seeing this.
My overriding thought from beginning to end: This is an absolutely Exquisite Corpse.
Rian takes JJ’s entry, laughs at it, and savagely ends the two most useless characters while finishing the trilogy in one movie, giving Abrams nowhere to go if he attempts to make a ROTJ lookalike.
Sure, I could pick apart the logical gaps in the spaceship pursuit and the Godspeed Maneuver™, but that’s for a future fanedit.
This movie is multiple main course meals, and for that alone it’s worth putting up there with the Original Trilogy.

Star Wars Episode 9 - …?
I’m still trying to figure out why I’d want to watch episode IX.
I do despite how unsure I am about TLJ because I seriously have no fucking idea what IX is going to be. I had a feeling for the trajectory of VIII after TFA (even though I was only, like, 30% right), but after TLJ I seriously have no clue where IX is going to go.
Also so I can figure out how I want to edit the sequel trilogy as a cohesive whole. Some things I’d like to change about TLJ might not be doable depending on where they take IX.
Im almost sure when I do my edit of The Last Jedi (which is already being planned in detail) that I will make it the last episode of the saga. I think it works beautifully as such.
I’m freaking whipped, y’all. I love that movie. The grand, mythic scope, the intensity, two and a half hours and I still didn’t want it to end.
Also, I didn’t read hardly any posts before writing this, so I can’t wait to see how contrarian my opinion is. 😛

The animal cruelty message just felt kind of forced in for me. I feel like despite there being some cool stuff on Canto Bight, I feel that cutting it down significantly would benefit the pace of the movie as a whole experience. Each man to their own. Glad to hear about some more people who enjoyed the film.
It wasn’t really an animal cruelty message, that was just used more as a specific example of the pervasive inhumanity of the casino/galaxy at large.
Hmm. I see where your coming from. Maybe it just stuck out to me more. I’m heading to bed but will be back in full force tomorrow to discuss with the people who weren’t very happy with the film.
P.S. Yoda looked great up close. Far away was a bit hokey but the scene was written, scored, and shot almost perfectly.

That’s the thing. At least fans should be a bit consistent. I personally really, really enjoyed The Force Awakens but my main gripe was that it played it too safe. So no wonder the Last Jedi felt so refreshing and amazing to me.
I personally felt that both did served the purposes they needed to. As happy as I am that JJ will be back, I do still wish they brought in someone else to bring it somewhere else (though here’s hoping JJ can deliver).
Also, since I guess my review will just come out in random fragments, here’s something I just realized: my least favorite scenes in TFA were Snoke scenes, my most favorite scenes in TLJ were Snoke scenes.
I don’t see how anyone can complain about Snoke in this film as well. He served his purpose as a great foil to our main protagonists. He was also animated well, acted well, and written brilliantly, especially in hindsight of how things turn out. I could care less about some elaborate backstory. It’s not like in Return of the Jedi we knew anything more about the Emperor than the fact that he was the evil master of Darth Vader.

You could also get rid of Leia’s superman moment. But besides that? Well what you have is a Star Wars masterpiece. Now begins my full review. Feel free to poke any holes through it if you disagree:
This film is so incredible in so many ways and I don’t know where to start so I will just start moving through some of the great things.
Firstly, Luke’s fate was one of the most beautiful and inspiring scenes in Star Wars history. This film instantly feels so much richer and more satisfying than both Force Awakens and Rogue One.
Rey and Kylo’s relationship was absolutely perfect. An amazing moral drama between the two that had my eyes glued to the screen. Luke and Yoda’s scene might be the most heartwarming scene in the whole film. Luke’s training is full of interesting moments (sometimes too much humor), and an amazing depiction of how the Force connects everything. When Rey feels things around her and we get her describing the beauty and chaos with the accompanied visuals, it was just visceral.
The multiple perspectives and descriptions of the Kylo/Luke flashback work perfectly. I felt so sorry for Luke and the guilt he felt. His dialogue about it being a “fleeting moment” and only then realizing his great mistake was just wonderful. I also actually started to see why Kylo would have that as the moment that sets him crazy and loose.
The relationship between Rey and Ben Solo was beautiful. Very saddening towards the end yet still emotionally rewarding. Their force bond was a genius and inventive idea from Rian Johnson. Their complex moral dilemma of Rey seeing the desire for good in Kylo makes sense and I totally felt it to be true. And Kylo’s use of Rey’s parentage against her and his persuasion was just great.
Luke at the end was a true Jedi. Using the force for the ultimate defense, using Ben Solo’s hate against him, saving his friends, and lighting hope for the galaxy. Then he finally finds his peace with a binary sunset. The same sunset he gazed upon when he once desired to be apart of something greater than himself.

That was actually a very nice and accurate description of the very high highs of the movie to me. Having in mind Luke’s character in TFA, what they did was masterful and very well executed. He walking all alone to face the huge and powerful First Order and WIN is quite possibly my favorite scene in movie history.
And I loved Luke+Kylo Ren’s story and their relationship, and deep down part of me wishes that THAT was Episode 7.But the way the movie flows for a while didn’t really feel that much like Star Wars to me, and that alongside the cheesy jokes and other cheesy moments in general took me out of the movie several times.
You also described my issues. I’m of the opinion that all pacing issues stem from Canto Bight and with the correct restructuring and cutting down of that sequence, the pacing will feel seamless.
I also plan to cut out MANY comedic moments as well as Leia’s superman moment.

It seems pretty clear that Leia was going to have a big part in IX, obviously in leading the Resistance but also in mentoring Rey and most likely saving Ben.
I completely agree. Apart of me is sad that we won’t see that story thread continue since it so well set up. But she was wonderful in this and her last scene with Luke is simply beautiful. The line of “No one is ever truly gone” served both the themes of the movie and spoke measures about Carrie and her positive influence on everyone’s lives and how our princess will truly always be with us.

I already have quite a few ideas:
-remove Luke milking the animal
-remove Leia superman moment
-MAYBE remove Luke messing with Rey with the piece of grass in the first lesson. Apart of me wants to streamline the scene and its tone, but another part of me just can’t resist removing literally one of the best jokes in the movie in my opinion.
-Most importantly, cut down and restructure the Canto Bight scene the most possible. For sure cutting down the weird horse chase sequence. Also remove most jokes in this sequence. Mainly just streamline and restructure this so it moves by a lot quicker, eats up less screen time, and we feel like we spend more time with Rey and Luke as an audience.
-remove many of the jokes. Some off the top of my head would maybe be Luke wiping his shoulder (maybe), removing Hux repeating Kylo’s command, remove Hux’s “You think we got him”. Mainly just make that sequence have much less humor.
-maybe end the scene on the falcon. The broom boy scene is kind of growing on me but we’ll see.
-Like Anojan said, maybe some rescoring in some places. There was nothing that stood out, but the score worked for the most part.

(I did enjoy TLJ - a lot, though I think this film may require a few viewings to take everything in)
I could see a few trims to humour, and a few scenes where the CGI didn’t quite work / sit right (though a 2nd viewing is very likely required).
As stated in the other TLJ Spoiler thread… it’ll be interesting to see what deleted scenes we’ll end up getting (and IF those deleted scenes will be in an initial TLJ home release…)

There are the slight problems which would remain, namely the interpretation that the Resistance is blowing up the planet out of revenge, and that Chewie was responsible for the destruction of the Republic by not immediately blowing the charges before the weapon fired. So we would ideally include the Ackbar scene or some version of the weapon preparing to fire again. We would also need to split the aerial battle again to smooth over the scene transition.
Would the following work?
- Detonate the charges
- “The oscillator has been damaged but is still functional” - just like in the original, except the last words are heard over Poe’s radio.
- “looks like our friends got in”
- Forest battle part 1
- Attack run (sans “prepare to fire”)
- Forest battle part 2
And Hal’s gone to so much trouble to get that line replacement 😛
This sounds pretty great if the Ackbar line could be made to sound a little smoother. I think if Hal finds a good line replacement that says something like “weapon recharged in 30 seconds” or “reprimed” then that line would be a must. The more to help lessen any confusion.
So I just saw it. It was pretty much perfect, no flaws whatsoever, my favourite Star Wars film now. I swear I’m not fanboying, I’m pretty set in my opinion, unlike Rogue One. I’m sure my opinion of it will diminish in further viewings but for now I’m comfortable saying I like it the most out of the films. I did find it funny how Snap Wexley I think, a major character in the books, is killed off so nonchalantly. Good thing I never liked his character much.
Good to hear you liked it a lot. My hype right now is seeping from every pore of my body. After first hearing that Luke never actually attacks Kylo in the final fight, I was a bit disappointed, but it sounds just perfect to me now. “A Jedi uses the force only for defense…never for attack.” It shows he grows to become a true Jedi master who uses his godlike powers to save what’s left of the resistance and his friends. Tomorrow night cannot come sooner.
Then it looks like a change might be in order for v2.1 or 3.

I agree with the suggestion. Maybe removing the snoke scene would help tonally and lessen confusion.
I don’t know how I’d improve on the lightsaber battle. I had some ideas the other night about how Rey might appear to Kylo Ren near the end. The image in my mind was that Rey could take on a more menacing appearance as a result of channeling what is pretty clearly the Dark Side, and Ren is so taken aback by this that he cedes ground to her in surprise and fear. But it’s not a priority for this edit, since I think it was done fairly competently in the original version.
That actually sounds like an incredible idea. Anything to give us more reason to believe that she would beat Kylo.

Seems like a pretty good edit if I were to choose one. Still not even certain on Ady’s at this stage though seeing it is going to be more of a fan edit than a fan fix like ANH:R and TESB:R were.
Sure ROTJ doesn’t measure up to the other two movies but I never really had any issues with it to the extent I’d rather watch a fan edit over the original theatrical.

Yeah, this fanedit that I linked is basically RotJ anti-cheese, and how much that improves the movie is almost ridiculous.
Look for more cheese cut and a restructured third act in my new alternate version of this. It will be uploaded in about a week. This last week of school before winter break has been back breaking so can’t find the time to upload.
It’s sad that because of this community I can never watch a Star Wars film without thinking of how I would edit it. I already have at least one definite edit I would make. More Green is all I will say
I haven’t seen it yet (will be in less than a day) but I know what your talking about. Someone like yourself with better special effects skills who could recolor Luke’s saber at the end to green would be awesome 😃. I also am curious if we will get any extra action of Luke in the deleted scenes. Rian Johnson said he has MANY deleted scenes that will be on the blu-ray and he said he even had to cut out entire sequences so that’s pretty cool and might serve for some good fan editing material.
I actually am really looking forward to the ending of the film and the big twist involving Luke (don’t wanna give away too much, since it seems that this ain’t so much of a spoiler thread after all).
