Info & Ideas: ESB and ROTJ Wishlist
Time

Yeah, I know Ady won't do it, but like you said, maybe someone else will take up the challenge.  I truly wish I had half the skills of the many brilliant editors who frequent this site.  This would be a definite project, and I would likely donate it to Ady in the hopes that he would incorporate it.  But alas, my skills in this field are pretty pathetic.

I know this has already been extensively covered, but I wish that someone would create some CGI AT-STs for the Battle of Hoth.  It would only make sense that the Empire would employ more than just one type of vehicle, and it would improve the continuity between shots.  They wouldn't have to be close up and detailed, just some little chicken walkers hanging around the legs of the AT-ATs, with maybe a couple of close flybys from the snowspeeders (and here we would only need one of the existing Hoth scout models as seen below; no real motion would be necessary, nor would the whole walker necessarily be visible).

In the novel, the Death Star begins to rotate in order to take out Endor after the shield generator was destroyed.  This isn't so radical, but it could capture the tension you mention.  Also, if more capital ships are destroyed and the fleet in greater apparent jeopardy because of the Death Star and star destroyers, this might better capture the tension without the film having to be too dramatically altered.

Star Wars Redemption: Episode 1 (Rendering final cut!) (* lost project *)
Time

Mr. Benja, I just want you to know that I have no editing skills and therefore can provide little in the way of help with that.  However, I know that you are working hard and that it can be hard to continue with a project when there is not a bunch of commenting going on.  For what it's worth, you have my support and I hope you get through this as quickly as you are able se we can enjoy the many hours you've invested.  This is of course not a nag to hurry up (those things are rude, I feel), but merely just an expression of my excitement over your project.  Keep up the good fight!

What do you LIKE about the EU?
Time

I just bought Allegiance by Zahn.  To me, this novel fills a gap that is largely neglected by most EU authors: interquels between OT films.  Prior to this and Zahn's sequel, Choices of One, there are only two prominent interquels (that I can think of at least): Splinter of the Mind's Eye and Shadows of the Empire.  I'm aware of the Marvel comics, but those are lower down on the canonicity scale and have been forgotten in many ways.  I look forward to reading this book by my favorite Star Wars author and during a period of Star Wars EU that could use some fleshing out.

How would you have done ROTJ?
Time

Not much to add to this.  I agree with many of the points danny_boy made.  I simply enjoy ROTJ for what it is.  It's a different movie with matured characters.  It's not perfect but I really enjoy many of its subtleties.  Contrary to what many believe, ESB is not perfect either.  In the end they're different movies with different directors and different challenges to be faced by characters who have changed over time.  Batman Begins and The Dark Knight are vastly different films, but I really appreciate what they are as a continuation of the same story, but facing different challenges with a different style of directing from the same director.

That being said, I also see where zombie84 is coming from.  I really like the many ideas he has put forth as quite fascinating and potentially better.  But as it is, I am quite content.

Of course I look forward to ROTJ Revisited, as I'm sure I'll never go back to the original.  I certainly prefer ANH Revisited to any official release.

The Prequel Radical Redux Ideas Thread
Time

I think I'm one of those guys that does not mind the existence of multiple universes in Star Wars.  As I've said elsewhere, I appreciate Star Wars as simply the OT, sometimes the OT and PT, and sometimes as the OT and some EU.  I think with the various fanedits around, I extend each the same courtesy to each of them.  I watch them, enjoy them as an alternate but similar story, consider how I might like the concepts there better than the official storyline, and hope that one day one will be completed that will surpass all else.

For these reasons I truly like these radical redux threads.  For instance, I would love to see Count Dukoo as a misguided renegade instead of the new Sith apprentice.  He'd be a more interesting villain because it would allow for more grey area instead of so much black and white.  I would love to see two Death Stars.  I would love to see a lengthier and grander space battle and ground battle as part of Endor.  I would love to see more romantic discussions about sand and quick forgiveness for the mass murder of innocent primitive people.  Well, maybe not that last sentence.  In any case, there is so much I love discussing and there are so many ideas that make for a fascinating series that were not incorporated.  I hope that one day I do have a six part series that will be definitive for me.  But for now, I enjoy the originals, the many edits, and the radical redux threads allowing me to imagine grander possibilities.

As an additional note, I still think there should be more cooperation and sharing among the many talented editors here.  For instance, there are two Ep III edits going on that show great strengths in different aspects from two talented editors (one more auditory and musical, the other more visual with neat special effects).  I think neither feels like working directly with the other, though they are sharing a few things.  I honestly feel a large project utilizing the strengths of multiple editors would get a project done quicker and with a finer end product.  If no one could work together like this due to different visions of the end product, the editors should at least be willing to allow other editors to borrow and build off of their fanedits without reservation.  After all, each editor is simply borrowing from George Lucas.  If more cooperation of this sort took place, I imagine that many more of these radical but brilliant ideas could become a reality.

Ender, socialism claims itself as the "true" form of democracy. It's just another interpretation of the word "democracy", you can share it or not. It's aplication in the real world, has commonly derived in autocratic governments, ergo the socialist system has flaws, as well as capitalism has its own flaws (poverty, exclusion, etc.).

But you can always remain with the theory, and its allegiance to democracy (a very particular sense of democracy).  The nazis, on the other hand, defined theirselves as an anti-democratic movement... Which is why they are more easily accepted as the bad guys anywhere in the world you can be.

So summing up, OT feels universal because the bad guys are universally evil. Not politically evil. The Empire is against life itself, not against free market, and that's why you, and a cuban could feel the same way towards SW.

I just find it hard to express these kind of things in a foreign language, and just wanna point out that the aim of this post wasn't to keep on with the off-topic but to (intend to) make a point about the universality of a story, and the risk of destroying it.

PS: I just found out you could (considering my english isn't pretty good) read this better in JRR Tolkien's "On fairy tales" and "Letters". (when he speaks of allegories).

You explained yourself quite clearly and make an excellent point.  I'm reading The Secret History of Star Wars right now, and only now realize that Lucas's inspiration is much related to the North Vientnamese vs. the U.S.  I disagree with George on probably 97.3 % of his politics, yet he tells a universal story that I can greatly appreciate.  Again, excellent point.

Yes, I have a tail, and scales too.

I would love to see the bunker battle deleted scene from ROTJ reinstated! I've always felt that Han, Leia, Chewie, etc. reached the control room far too easily.

While I agree, it also would be interesting to try to integrate this into a later point after Han convinces the bunker folks to open the door again.  Adywan and others have wanted to show more efforts on the parts of the Rebels, and I wonder if it might be worthwhile to show that the battle was not over once the Ewoks surrounded the Imperials just outside the bunker doors.  Just a thought, though.

... it gives you a much needed idea about why the Empire is so bad and it has a great pay-off in the Yavin battle, when Biggs dies.

"The empire already starting natiolalizing commerce in the central systems"... The Empire's bad because it's socialist?? Really?

Without making this discussion overly political........

With all due respect, there is a Politics thread in the Off Topic section if you want to talk about politics in the real world (well American Politics on the whole but you could always start another thread if that one doesn't tick your boxes).

We have no idea if the Empire strictly followed any political model known on Earth.

We know it is an Autocracy and shared some aspects with the Roman Empire, The British Empire and the Third Reich but that's about it.

If you are proposing that the dialogue be changed so that the Imperials inject pro-Socialist sentiment in between their normal lines and the Rebels make anti-Socialist comments inbetween  shooting stormtroopers etc. Then that would be different.

That would be a Redux idea and radical ideas are welcome.

As for powering the engines down I'm all for it.

It currently looks like Solo is going to ram the hanger bay (which is what would have happened if Bill Shatner was flying the Falcon).

I understand, appreciate the respect you always show, tuck my tail between my legs, and provide a sheepish explanation that I simply was trying to show why Biggs felt the nationalization of commerce indicated the Empire was evil.  *Hangs head in shame*

You know, even just being really old would have sufficed.  Reflected force lightning is a corny explanation and it was probably my biggest complaint with ROTS (remember, I like the PT better than many on this site).

By the way, you really do like the radical ideas, which is why you seem to be lord over each of these radical redux threads :)  The merging of the two characters would have been radical indeed.

I hate how prequels feel they have to explain everything that takes place in the earlier published but chronologically later films.  It's like the only events of significance in the lives of the characters take place in very brief windows of time.  Explanations of Professor X's paralysis come to mind as bothersome and inconsistent with previously established movie canon.

Wonder where I'm going with this?  My point: why was it necessary to show Palpatine' facial damage in Ep III?  I don't think an explanation has ever been wanted or needed.  The EU explanation (from Dark Empire-ugh-but logical) was that his massive usage of the dark side had consumed his body.  Though I was young when I'd first heard this reasoning, it seemed sound to me, and I feel it would have been my ultimate assumption had there never been any EU.  I wish that someone could edit out the Emperor's facial damage throughout the whole movie.  I would feel completely content if I'd watched the films in chronological order, left off in ROTS with Palpy looking relatively healthy, then picked up in ESB and ROTJ looking decrepit.  That would certainly be a challenge for any editor to fix, though.
