Collaborative Fanediting: An ROTJ Proposition (BACK ON TRACK WITH EMANSWFAN AT THE HELM--SEE POST 1488 OR OP FOR A LINK!)

Ray, I totally see what you're saying.  I guess I simply don't hate the prequels the way so many do.  I don't mind seeing subtle references in the OT.  On top of that, I don't know why people can't simply overlook it the same way you overlook the battle droid head as "just another droid."  It's "just another ship."  Long ago I read Splinter of the Mind's Eye.  It was a slow tale that felt weird to me.  That was when I accepted much of the EU at the time (probably around 1998 or thereabouts).  But with greater knowledge of the context in which it was written, I read it again just last year (June or July I think).  This time I read it as the Star Wars sequel it was originally written to be.  I pretended ESB and ROTJ didn't even exist.  I pretended Leia wasn't Luke's sis, that Vader wasn't his pops.  And I really enjoyed it.  I think that it shouldn't be so hard for people to just accept and reject whatever they really care to.  Folks come to this site and are reminded every time that the PT exists, and removing all references to it in the updated OT films won't make them disappear.  I honestly think that we can enjoy PT elements that don't interfere with the plot.  Simply pretend they are new ships.  That's the way I see it.

As for the technical aspects, I again tend to agree with aalenfae: I believe there would be a greater variety for a group like the Rebels.  Visually it may be confusing, but I hope we don't go overboard.  I simply think it'd be cool to see a beat up N-1 flying in the distance for 2 seconds, to see a couple of Z-95s briefly, to see the Victory Star Destroyers taking part as support craft for the Empire, to see the Y-wing squadron comprised of a few BTL-B Y-wings who might actually make a bombing run as the Y-wing was originally defined (hence why Gold Squadron made the first Death Star trench run in ANH).  I don't feel anything needs to be too in-your-face.  Just smattering for variety and fun, and fitting well with the concept that the Rebels took whatever they could get their hands on and used it in their most important battle.

In the end, we'll put it to a vote.  I know you're not the only one who feels the way you do.

Ron, that's really not a bad idea at all.  You're on fire today!  As he departs from Dagobah, we could maybe have R2 beep at him, and while we're looking at Luke's display interpreting R2's beeps, we could dub in "Tatooine" (from the end of ESB), then we see Luke's face, "I have a promise to keep...to an old friend."  If I remember correctly, the shot is on his face, and it would be hard to remove old, but I think that'd be okay.

Ray, I see the logic in your statement, but my thought is this: the Rebellion has never been better off, but they are also a conglomeration of various factions and races and formerly independent resistance groups (hence: Rebel Alliance).  While they are able to supply many newer ships, they also realize that this battle is not simply a scrimmage.  They're throwing everything they've got against the Empire, old and new.  If they lose this battle, they really lose everything.

I'd be happy to see any effort.

So I was thinking, what ever happened to the Imperial Fleet at the end of the movie?  We assume they retreated, but when?  And I know, the anti-GL answer is, "You don't have to spell everything out," but it is a little bizarre.  It would be nice to see the Imperial ships begin retreating when the Executor is destroyed.

I agree, but somebody needs to volunteer to do it.  I also found the crystal idea interesting, but can it be made to look like anything other than a flash movie?  And yes, DVD quality is the way to go.  We don't hear from emanswfan, so I hope he's stlil interested in fixing up the deleted scenes.

I've been pushing heavily for Victory SDs.  And I hope we can include more Mon Cals as well.  Finally, I think Z-95s could make sense as well.  But we'll vote on new ships soon.

Hey Ray, don't get too worried.  I don't think we'll truly be using any Ric Olie, I doubt we have the funds to make a Bothan scene (and while I and many find the concept interesting, I don't think we could make anything truly fit with the rest of the film).  As for EU and PT ships, I think too many here oppose everything PT or EU on principle rather than reason.  I truly believe that in spite of their flaws, the PT and EU have several valuable aspects that are overshadowed by their shortcomings in the eyes of those here.  If used wel and/or subtly (much as the battle droid head in ANH:R), it need not ruin the edit for you :)

I watched Tron: Legacy about a month ago.  I was honestly quite surprised how much I enjoyed it, given the story of the first film.  It wasn't perfect, but the effects were great (especially the youngerfying of Mr. Bridges), and the roles of CLU and Tron were honestly surprisingly interesting, in spite of a lack of emotional attachment to some characters.

So I finally talked my wife into renting the original Tron.  It took us three nights of dozing off to get through it. The effects were revolutionary for its time, the concept was interesting, but it looks like they invested all their money into the emerging technology and ran out of funds to hire a scriptwriter.  Still, it's somewhat enjoyable in its own right, and gives important backstory information to the new film.  I'll buy it in a combo pack or at a garage sale.

^I meant on our collaborative thread specifically.  Believe me, you immediatelyly alerted me to his style when I very first joined this forum and made my first suggestion.  Sine then, I've realized that my ideas may not line up exactly with his, and thus I've followed his projects with great interest and anticipation, but not with much participation.

Oh, I understand all this quite well.  I'd never dream of asking Ady to halt his current project to work on something else.  I was referring to Bingo's comment, as in when he works on ROTJ:R.  I appreciate his collaboration with a team.  And I learned quickly when I joined this site that Ady's his own man and makes his own calls.  It was meant mostly as an acknowledgement of his abilities and a nice wish that I never expect to come true.  But after I wrote the first sentence, I realized it might sound rude, and wanted to make sure he knew his opinions were welcome, even though he'd probably never give them.

Is that the Z-95 Headhunter?  It seems logical for me as well.  All new starfighters would seem to make most sense if they were cameos of course rather than the main force, but still I think they'd make for an interesting fleet, implying the Rebels are growing, but still are ultimately a ragtag force.
