I like it. You rearranged Anakin's lines particularly effectively. Nice work.
I like it. You rearranged Anakin's lines particularly effectively. Nice work.
Yes, I frankly would love it. I personally enjoy variety and see no need for a "one and only way" to watch the SW films. As long as the OOT were included, I'd be happy with any and all SE versions as well.
Yes, it was MrInsaneA, and yes, it is no big deal. And I see your reasoning there, Ron, with Chewie and Han. That had never occurred to me. Nevertheless, it does distract from the story you are trying to tell, and when weighing the two, I think the focus on Luke is more important.
EDIT: I personally don't much care for Salacious Crumb, and removing him altogether would be ideal to me. If people don't like the Ewoks, they must not much care for the Kowakian Monkey-Lizard either. Therefore in my script, 3PO never loses an eye.
Oh, happy to comment on whatever you like. The only difference I noticed about the sail barge was regarding the actions and death of Mr. Fett, which I already commented on. Did I miss anything? I'll again confess that I think you did a good job, and it showed me it can be done and I will be voting yes when presented with your idea.
As for the Lars homestead and surrounding material, I feel you did a good job. It effectively told the story you wanted, and I thought visually it was very interesting. But I personally find it a bit distracting from the main story, particularly the flashback stuff. If we were to include a scene like this, I would suggest forgetting the Falcon once we're focused on Luke; we already know they leave Tatooine and jump to lightspeed. I'd also probably just cut the flashbacks and the panic in the X-wing and simply have him watching the sunset near his home, the sand blows in, he heads to his X-wing, and we're off. Especially with the choice of music, we know exactly what Luke is thinking in this moment, and flashbacks don't fit the Star Wars mold that well. It's not my preferred storyline, but again, if we were to follow your line, I'd probably imply more than I'd show...more powerful and Star Warsy that way.
As always, my comments are meant to be constructive, and I must commend you. You did good work, Ron. You should consider investing in the software and taking some movie editing classes. You've got the natural talent, and you clearly have the passion.
EDIT: in response to the sandworm question, what you'd probably have to do is show several worms throughout the desert, including somebody popping to the surface. This would make it clearer that there are other creatures present.
So I finished it (I was actually pretty close before pausing it). Not bad work. The sandworm idea is interesting, but not obvious enough to indicate a sandworm. If something like that were shown, I would assume Sarlacc was somehow moving the sand with underground appendages. The Boba Fett footage is honestly surprisingly good. If the interaction between Fett and the good guys were something like this, I would be perfectly content. Obviously the editing would need a little tightening and the special effects would need some improvement, but I really like how it played out. Good work, Ron! I will include it in the vote and I truly hope it makes it into the script.
So Rebel Assault II is obviously useless except maybe for some lifting of the audio. Too bad, because there were some decent cockpit shots in there, if only the resolution weren't so very low. But from what I've read, the pilots were green-screened in there, so it shows how effective the illusion can be if we have the right costumes.
I'm sorry about your troubles, Ronster, and I don't have an answer. I'm letting it run through to where I left off, and I'll try to get it done and let you know my thoughts.

- Dune, done properly. The David Lynch version looked the part (mostly), but failed in the script department, whereas the SciFi channel version got the script mostly right, but suffered from horrible set/costume design and acting.
Totally agree. I love Lynch's visual style--it's totally what I imagined when reading Dune. I didn't end up watching more than 10 minutes of the SciFi channel's version though. I couldn't get past the terrible set design.
And I'll second that. Seriously, if Lynch's version only changed three things, it would have been far more digestible: 1) The Bene Gesserit telepathy/weirding modules; 2) That obnoxiously disgusting portrayal of the floating Baron (not that the original Baron wasn't disgusting, but he was actually quite an interesting and intelligent character); 3) Conveying everything through internal dialogue. Obviously there were other things that they didn't do well (i.e. acting, pacing), but visually it had so much going for it that it amazes me how significantly they blew it. I'd love a true, faithful but somewhat creative interpretation of Dune with no Fremen butts or breasts and good visuals.
That would be great. I was around 15 minutes into it, paused it to do some studying, came back to it, and it set it back to the beginning :( But I promise I'll get to it, even if you aren't able to export it again. It really is fun to see some of your ideas in motion, even if I don't see all of them as a perfect fit for our edit. You have many interesting ideas.
So just trying to think of some footage ideas...are the Rebel Assault 2 cutscenes worthwhile? I looked on YouTube and their quality is low, but is that just because it's YouTube? If we were to capture the real thing at as high a definition as possible, would it be worth trying to incorporate that into our Endor battle, or are they just too low in resolution?

A Legend Of Zelda film series could be fun.
As long as each film was set in a different era with different Links, Zeldas etc but with a mapped out continuity.
Perhaps you mean something like this:

Actually, a good Zelda movie would be very cool.
So I've pretty much got the vote ready, but I'm holding off for a few more days. This vote will be the last. I will then update the script (if necessary) and hand out assignments. As soon as that is done, my role here will not be nearly so active. Today I've really realized how I've put far too much energy into this project (I already know I have, but today it was really striking). I can't keep neglecting other things. I've got to step back. That doesn't mean I won't be around, but I'm serious when I say I will have to be more passive. My role will largely be assigning and updating. I love to keep the energy going and the ideas flowing, but we will have to trust the editors to make the right decisions. Please bear this in mind, and as many of you know that I need to announce to the world my plans in order to help me stick to them, please hold me to this pledge.
I really hope we successfully accomplish this edit. ROTJ was my favorite of the trilogy as a child, and it will be again if we can get this done. Please everyone, help me make this possible, and keep the energy going, even when I'm not contributing half the keystrokes in this thread.
Just read the OP...and of course they're finally really making an Ender's Game, which I'm sure makes him happy. It makes me happy too!
Oh, and Orson Scott Card is Mormon...just FYI.
That CGI Star Tours is very interesting, though I don't think its quality is good enough for our edit. Nevertheless, it is fun.
Ron, I figured that since you live in the UK, you must have been up pretty late working on that. Thanks for all your hard work. I'll watch the third clip as soon as possible, but it appears that there is no skipping allowed, so I have to watch every second to make sure I don't miss anything. Not that I mind, but I'm simultaneously doing homework and probably should watch it for 20 or 30 minutes straight. But I'll get to it.
Very interesting. Not a complete substitute, but a nice supplement.
So I watched it, skimming through parts that were clearly unchanged, but taking time on all the new stuff. I agree that you did a good job with the Emperor on Coruscant. That was a cool mockup, and the preview footage that you used for Imperial Palace was especially effective. I also noticed you updated the Beggar's Canyon bit, which looked good too. And the opening was fun with sound. Obviously it's all very rough, but you did a good job and gave a good idea of how such a potential edit could look. Oh, good job with the Interactive Game audio too.
Sorry, I didn't get the chance to watch it yet, but I'll give it a look momentarily.
Downloading and will watch when I've got a break in class. And for some reason I thought you were using the Eclipse :(
That's okay, I'm sure it's still great ;)
I think West End Games had done a great deal for Star Wars EU. Without interfering with the storyline, they simply expanded upon things in a sense that still let it feel like Star Wars. The Imperial Sourcebook, though now noted as containing inaccurate information (such as the size of the Executor) is still one of my favorite Star Wars books.
Hmmm...when I wrote about facing Darth Vader, I thought I'd figured it out. I'll try to rough it later.

I'm thinking these sort of ideas to represent the TIE hangar, but aalenfae pointed out that it would much easier to show an inside-looking-out view.
Pic 2 and pic 5 look the nuts,,, This is basically what I want to see in atleast 1 star wars film..... It would just be very cool to see... Hope it's this edit
Domoinc has a good head on his shoulders he seems to get to the point on things.... His opinion is well decided and unbiased and although he is not pushy he lays it out bare... @Domoniccobb you'll be pleased to know I did the Coruscant scene because you said you'd like to see somthing of this nature and emanswfan made me decide to go back to it and I sorted out my problems with the executor so hopefully it's up here tonight at 85% and converting... It looks better than anything else because it's the last thing I did and It's the best I had done compositing wise it actually quite good scene.
I have no problem with using the BD 2011 but will we be able to do everything else to match as D said it all needs to be decided when the deleted scenes are done by emaswfan what resolution is he getting a good picture from these scenes 720P or lower we could still downsize the 2011 BD anyway.,,, Also before filming anything too so alot rests on the final outcome of what resoliution the deleted scenes look best at.
@Darth_Ender it's your fault I did the stuff with the executor... That was your inspiration on to me... Because I have the 3 star destroyers at the begining as in the original.
Do you mean the Eclipse?

I know it seems a bit late to be asking this, but what is our source so he knows what colors to match? I believe we should go with Harmy's Despecialized Edition as he offered. Obviously we may need to pull bits from other sources, but that should be our primary source and efforts should be made to match.
Is this right, guys? Should we used the Despecialized Edition, or is there another preferable version for a base? Hyperspace Edition? Dark_Jedi's V3? 2004 SE? 2011 BD?
I would say 2011 BD. There are a lot of SE additions that would be useful. We don't want to work from scratch here in terms of updating special effects.
True, but Harmy is upscaling his, isn't he? But I don't know if his V1 is BD quality or not, and he's only just starting to finish up on ANH V2. Also, since some of our material may be DVD quality, do we really want to aim for BD quality, or would we rather downsize to match?
I'm referring to actual SE additions, not the quality. Harmy removed useful things like the added space ships and he re-eyebrowed Anakin.
I guess this is something that would need to be voted on. For example; I like the new palace door, CG Sy Sootles, Han's unfreezing, the bantha herd, blinking Ewoks, improved R2 malfunction, and the celebrations. But many people might not like these. So maybe, depending on the general opinion, we could have a hybrid of sorts. With a color correction of course.
Bottom line: Either 2011 BD, Despecialized, or both.
Ahhh...I see, and I definitely agree that there are many good things about the SE that I want to have remain. Probably a hybrid is best. I honestly don't want to put it up for a vote because...well, because then we'll have to vote on every little SE change to keep or discard. I think we should use Harmy's colors whenever possible, BD for SE changes we want to keep, and hopefully emanswfan can make the deleted scenes match, while TMBTM can do the same for the colorized B/W clips. If not, the difference may not be that noticeable for at least the short bits, but we may then have to downgrade. But just looking for a quick consensus, can we go with Despecialized for colors (TMBTM was asking me)? Thanks.
And yes, I've always valued Cobb's input. :)

Well, it is shorter than the Executor, but...thicker. Personally, if we include it, I think it should be a big ship. Part of my reason for advocating it at all is because Vader brought the Executor, the Emperor would bring his big bad boy and flaunt his capital ship. If it's going to be a small ship, I'd honestly rather not include it.
Okay...I'm still for it. GOECLIPSEGO!!!!
I'm actually surprised how many have been at all interested in the idea. I though when I first said it that it would be immediately shot down and trampled :)
This reminds me of the Nimitz and Enterprise in today's aircraft carriers: the Enterprise is the longer ship, but the Nimitz is newer and more massive.

So since the various Bothan ideas (or no Bothans) is up for vote once again, I have a few good reasons to push for my idea (the one I included in the script):
1) It requires the fewest newly filmed material or CGI work (just showing eyes and hands, and perhaps the eyes can be pulled from somewhere else).
2) It fits in well in a midpoint in the script rather than drastically changing the opening, and possibly the nature of the whole film.
3) Possibly one of the best reasons is that it takes place while a Bothan is preparing to dock with a Mon Cal cruiser and shows a shot from the cockpit looking out the canopy. Well, it just occurred to me that this clip from the end of Star Tours 2 could be slowed down and used to portray this shot, thus saving some work.
Reasons not to have Bothans:
1) It will take A LOT of work.
2) It does not add anything to the story or characters.
3) It does not feature any of the primary characters, and, thus, will feel un-Star Warsy.
Fair reasons, and you are right on all of them. Like I said, my idea would require the least work, but it still might be more than we should try for. All it really does is clarify Mon Mothma's statement. I also think it might fill a gap between scenes, but it really isn't that important. Again, that's fair.

Damn it is taking as long as the edit (58mins) to do the conversion so it's gonna be late because I have to chop it up now and add some subs to the very begining.... Nothing happens too fast with this stuff but I will promise to get some of it up tonight even if it kills me
No offese D but I'm taking a break after this... I will eventually pull it all together into a complete rough cut...
Believe me, I understand, and my efforts have been puny compared to yours. You deserve a break.
