I can actually see why they end up shorter now I'm doing one

Did you see my post about ATS?

I agree that Across the Stars is a bit out of place, but as it's Ron's personal cut, I don't mind him showing its potential.  We did already vote that song down.

Looks like I have to use the AVI anyway, as the DVD is offline.  Bummer.  I have DVDFlick which can convert AVIs to DVDs relatively quickly, but it is always lower quality and often the sound is out of sync, even when I change a particular setting that supposedly addresses this.  At least I can easily convert it to an NTSC DVD if I want to.

That might be what I'll do, but I like to have the DVD as well.

Oh yeah, I was reading the time length and many cuts and it made me wonder about time.  Folks want to keep at least a two hour edit for us.  I don't think we need to be as drastic in our version, but at least some of it might be a good suggestion as to what we should do as well.  1:40 is just too short for the type of film we're doing, though some of this will be ensured by our inclusion of deleted material and some new shots.

Only problem for me is that it's PAL, which I can still watch, but it's a pain in many cases.  I know I can alter the way my DVD and BD players work or watch it on the computer, but I also like to distribute these edits to people who are even less savvy as to this sort of thing than I am.  I just wish everyone would make NTSC versions as well.  Oh well, I forgive daneditor/Yads :)

So after reading up a bit on the Dan Edit, I wonder why I never downloaded it before.  I feel it may have a great deal to offer in terms of editing choices and creating a tight storyline.  I will download and watch it soon, and then will be able to offer a few more suggestions.  I really do need to hold off on the final vote for my sake as well.

Can't tell you where to find the radio drama stuff, but here is ben_danger's listing of SSWR's ideas which includes how he spliced it together...very clever I think:

I wish I had the time to do my own take, but I appreciate you going at it.  Hopefully MrInsaneA is able to tell us how the rough cut stands at the present.  But yeah, it would be nice to see any and all interpretations and draw inspiration from them.  Heck, unpopular ideas may prove popular once visualized somewhat...that's how it was for me with your Boba Fett suggestions.

That's fine, I'll hold off for a few days.  I of course would like to see your edit.  Even though I often disagree with you on story direction, I take quite a bit of inspiration from your individual ideas.  Just let me know when you're ready.

I haven't seen the Dan Edit yet...I'll have to have a look at it when I get the chance.

'Why the SW prequels are better than the OT' - article inside

As loose story concepts I would agree with much of what that article says.

This is why George should have handed the basic story elements to a writer and handed the final script to a better director of actors.

He could then have done what he does best organising the art department, editing action sequences, giving direction to the special effects unit.

There is potential in the concepts of the PT, just as there was potential in the concept of ongoing Special Editions of the original trilogy (not as replacements but as alternate flavours of the already existing films).

George is not the sort of person who should try to do everything.

He should have recognised his weaknesses and only played his strengths.

Instead we have a bizarre set of films with a split personality that wants to be a childish slapstick cartoon while also being a violent political parable.

George hasn't got the chops for either job let alone both at the same time.

This exactly.

Oh, cool.  I didn't understand that you agreed, but I think your line really does make it more justifiable.  But I'll still put it in the vote, since both you and MrInsaneA both at least once thought it was the way to go.  I think your last sentence answered mine and everyone's concerns though: if the Eclipse is escorted by several other Star Destroyers that stay, it would make more sense for the Eclipse to depart by itself.  Good call, Ron.

That's a good point on the line about Han's line, which to me further justifies making it a big ship.  I don't see how it is outdoing the Executor.  To me one is a Cadillac and the other is a Lincoln, but they're both luxury cars.  I just have a hard time believing the Emperor would bring something smaller and leave the big ship with Vader.  He's consistently shown that he's arrogant.

Even if we downscale the Eclipse, I don't think it should be the size of a regular Star Destroyer, nor do I think it should stay in the battle.  The Rebels are already outgunned.  We want their victory to be believable, and big or small, the Eclipse is sure to be a heavily armed vessel.  And if we keep it for the battle, the story virtually demands that we address what would happen to it.  We'd need to see its destruction as well.

I don't understand what you mean about two crippled Star Destroyers, Ron.  Luke's line can stay, that's fine with me.  I'll have to toy with the Jerjerrod scene and Vader in the hall as well.

That's not a bad idea...and communication on viewscreens is always shown in low-res (at least in the OT, which is part of its charm), so if we had a good reason to show pilots on a viewscreen we could probably find a use for a few shots...like you suggested, in cokpits, but perhaps even on the Home One bridge or something like that.  Good thinking.

The design is definitely cool, we agree on that.  As I mentioned before, the Executor is technically longer as well, so in that way the Executor does outdo it.  And since we'd never define weapons capacity onscreen, who knows which is really the more powerful vessel?  It just doesn't seem logical to me for the Emperor to arrive in a cool looking coupe while Vader arrives in a stretch limo.

I should note that when I first learned of the Eclipse, most folks thought that the Executor was only 8 km long, and the Eclipse was twice that.  Again, it just seemed like someone was overdoing it.  Once it became clear from comparing model sizes and how they are portrayed on screen that the Executor was around 19 km in length, I actually came to like the Eclipse more because it now appeared as an alternative and not just another more=better situation.  That's what I hope for with the Eclipse: an alternative, and only briefly shown.  I agree, I don't want too much.  I just want a cameo, and then it takes off.

Just found this website if we want to do any physical modeling instead of CGI:

http://users.hunterlink.net.au/~ddwwp/ScaleSolutionsShopResinModelKits.html

Could do the Executor and the Eclipse.

Having not known what the eclipse actually looked like until seeing that image on the link, I would say that it suits the emperor very well in a sense that it is stylized as such that it looks more like what he would travel in and I think now I understand why you have been saying this.... Although I would have had no means to be able to do a mock-up with that ship... But as I recall you saying that It would only serve as a vessel and not be in the battle with it's attributes... But you also lose the sense of the fleet getting bigger and amassing their forces in preparation for the rebels attack.

So I like the idea but I feel that you loose the empires fleet amassing there forces in greater numbers around DSII upon arrival of the emperor

Would it need to be Super-ster destroyer size and could the design be star destroyer size (scale down) and just use the design as opposed to what it actually "is" Then you could have it escorted by the executor for example and have the best of both.

Sorry not discounting that you want the Executor to drop Vader off as per the script... I am just looking at other possibilities.

Here is a finished model from scale solutions... To give you an idea what an assembled one might look like

http://www.starwars-models-images.com/others/SCALESOLUTIONS_ECLIPSE.html

So if you could imagine this as star destroyer size and seeing as they were not built until much later on in the EU Saga it might corelate that they were built at super star destroyer size in rememberence of dear old palps.

Basically I feel the design is it's selling point more spiky, gothic and more evil and better suited to the emperor so with not only seeing the imperial palace (if people like that tribute to ralph) and this it would continue to cunjure a greater cliche to old hammer horror type dracula's castle this bloke is incredibly evil. But I don't think it needs to be as big as it is in reality.

Your reasoning is probably very similar to MrInsaneA's.  I'll just say that I'm not that attached to the Eclipse...I think it'd be fun, but I can live without it.  The reason for ever mentioning it is this: in the novel it  became clear why Vader arrived only in a standard Imperial Star Destroyer--it's because the Emperor arrived in the Super Star Destroyer.  I read this after we'd already changed the script so that Vader arrived in the Executor.  Then it occurred to me...he's the Emperor, he's not going to be outdone by Vader.  Maybe he'd arrive in the Eclipse!  It's even badder in many ways.  Plus it looks pretty darn cool.

Then I thought, "No way.  That ship is too powerful.  Even minus the superlaser, having two giant ships against the Rebels would just be too much to make a happy ending realistic."  But then I thought, well, what if it drops him off and leaves?

You see, if it is to be included, it would have to be on par with Vader's ship, or it's just not worth it.  But then it would have to leave, or it would just be too much.  I know the Empire is amassing ships and men, but an empire as large as the Galactic Empire surely has far more ships and troops than shown here.  They gathered enough to defeat the Rebellion, but their forces still had other missions to perform, such as maintaining martial law throughout the Galaxy.  I can find it believable for the Eclipse to go fill some other role, and perhaps it would be better to explain somehow why it was leaving (not sure how this could be done).  But I truly feel it's better to either keep it big, or leave it out.  I like the idea, but I'm not emotionally attached to it, so either way I'm okay with it.

I guess if anyone can think of a decent way to explain its departure onscreen with available material (perhaps a dubbed line) and without distracting from the story, it might justify its presence a little better.  Any thoughts.

PS I'll include a miniature Eclipse as a voting item anyway.

The Movies You Would Like To See Made (Not SW)

I'm a big fan of PC adventure games and would enjoy movies based on the following:

Monkey Island

Gabriel Knight

Grim Fandango

Full Throttle

King's Quest

Space Quest

and so on

+1. Gabriel Knight and Quest for Glory probably have the most potential, in my opinion. Full Throttle is so cinematic already, it would undoubtedly make a killer feature film. King's Quest would be pretty  hard to pull off, IMO, without departing from the source material significantly.

I would also like to see the following:

-A seven-film adaptation of The Chronicles of Narnia that doesn't suck. (This would necessarily entail, among other things, actually sticking to the books.)

-A film adaptation of War of the Worlds that actually bears some semblance to the book. (Y'know, like maybe set it in the right time period? And use the same characters that were in the books? And the same storyline? Novel concept, I know.)

-An adaptation of The Door into Summer by Robert Heinlein. This was such an intriguing, thought-provoking novel...it's a shame it's never gotten a decent film treatment. (And don't go conforming the year 2000-era technology to real-world technology today. That would ruin it. Just stick to the book.)

-I know the thread title says "Not SW," but I can't help myself. I've always thought that the original Thrawn trilogy would make an excellent sequel trilogy (Ep. 7-9). Obviously, the original actors are all too old now. But with today's technology, I'm sure you could do an animated CG trilogy justice and use the original actors for the voices. (Think Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within, but with CG technology that is over a decade more advanced.) Obviously, it goes without saying that this would have to be helmed by someone other than George. In fact, he can't be involved at all. He already gave us an all-CG Star Wars trilogy, and look how badly that turned out!

I once commented in another thread, but I would love to see the Thrawn trilogy as well.  Mark Hamill's son is about the right age and bears a resemblance, and I once knew a guy who looked amazingly like Harrison Ford.  I think live action films could pull it off.  But I know it will never happen.
