When/Why did you become an OT purist?
Time

I agree that the film is probably better skipping the Biggs scenes, and including the scene in the Rebel hangar is kinda pointless without the early stuff. However, I'm hoping someone will eventually try an alternate train of thought with more of the emphasis on Luke and less on the droids, and thus include the Biggs scenes. I'm not looking for THE version of Star Wars I'll always watch. I'm looking for any and all versions that entertain me. To me, an Episode IV that cuts most of the droids (just enough to get the point that they've got the plans and fate is bringing them to Luke), focusing more on Luke and his personal struggles would still be interesting, in spite of the idea of the droids being the primary character threads for the first portion of the film.

The Enderverse (WAS: Finally! Ender's Game emerges from Development Hell!)
Time

Finally finished the next in the series: Shadow of the Giant.  It took me a while because I've been at this series for several months and it was getting a bit tedious.  Plus I was overworked at school and the story started a bit slow.  However, I am pleased to report an overall contentedness with the story as a whole.  In this one, the arch nemesis Achilles de Flandres is dead, but has left a legacy of ambitious nations.  Many of the former Battle School graduates accumulate power in their respective positions and turn on each other with their various supporting nations.  Meanwhile, Bean and his wife continue their hunt for what Achilles stole and hid throughout the world.  Bean's time may be running short.  And erstwhile, Peter continues his quest to consolidate his power, and ultimately marries Bean's divorced wife.

SPOILERS

Bean's condition will claim him soon, but they find all those babies distributed throughout the world in other women's wombs.  Some are found to have the same genetic condition as Bean, while others do not.  Bean then determines (with help in high places) to divorce his wife so she can remarry and care for the normal children while he takes his children on a voyage at near lightspeed in the hopes that low gravity and the granting of years through time dilation will prolong his life long enough for the earth-bound to find a cure and call him home.  All the actor nations in the previous wars in these books are still the primary fighters, only with shifting roles as to who are the good guys and who are the bad.  Peter succeeds in creating a very democratic system where various nations vote whether or not to enter his Free People of Earth (FPE) government, and finally has a credible military to support any territories dissenting from their majority-run government (i.e. Nubia from Sudan) in the desire to join the FPE.  A strange subplot was brought up, then swept under the rug, as if Card had intended to make more of it, forgot about it for a time, then remembered and just addressed it enough to say it was a hoax, in that Bean's creator supposedly engineered a dangerous virus that would alter human genetics, but had lied about the whole thing.  In the end, Peter is clearly on the path to a worldwide victory through peacekeeping and peaceful means, while the ambitious and destructive Battle School aggressors are on ships to govern foreign worlds where they will be the only queens in their games of chess, without any competitors, and therefore can rule effectively without competing ambition.

END SPOILERS

Overall I liked this one too.  It just took a bit for me to get into it.  I have problems with certain inconsistencies, though.  Again, Bean makes it clear that he *never* wanted to lead or fight or have any ambition, or even to be like Ender.  But clearly in Ender's Shadow, he deliberately mimics Ender to get ahead in the eyes of those in authority, with his eye particularly set on the future of earth.  Now you may argue that he didn't really want to be Ender, he was just pretending to get ahead, and I would agree that's probably true, but it does show he was ambitious enough to try to get ahead in the world by whatever means.  Again, Bean seems less omniscient than the 4 year-old we first got to know.  I'm surprised by this, but I like the fallible Bean better anyway.  Strangely, the noble Muslims who had seemingly forsaken all extremism in the previous book are now just as extremist as ever, or nearly so.  Many push the leader for war while he desires peace, and they go to some surprising lengths to pursue that end.  Peter is much more likable in this one.  In fact in each book he grows on you more an more.  Frankly his story is more interesting to me than Bean's and I sort of wish the books had been more focused on him.  However, he got a bit of Anakin treatment, i.e he was emasculated through retcons.  He was too tough and aggressive before for Battle School but was learning and maturing.  But now we learn that such was a lie and there is no such thing as "too aggressive for Battle School," and instead we learn that he is actually not charismatic enough (though most of the jerks in Battle School had utterly no charisma.

But in the end, I found it satisfactory.  Nothing compares to the original Ender's Game in my mind, but I still have enjoyed all these books.  Next up, Shadows in Flight, focusing on Bean's children on their lengthy voyage.

Building more Death Stars makes sense.

If the Soviets had destroyed the fourth Nuke the US would have built three more and probably have used them too.

Two Death Stars would have been better but a whole cluster of the buggers would have been better still.

It would be like the Emperor saying, "Well done little Alliance, you blew up the first of my Battlestations, now try blowing all these up!"

Even if the Rebels had failed at blowing the first one up I'd imagine the Empire would have built more.

Realistically, yes

Cinematically though it looks a bit dull just to have another one that isn't even finished.

I personally disagree, though I respect your opinion.  There's something I like about the two different designs (as they do look significantly different).  My personal wish is that we only were able to see different faces of the DSII instead of always the same side.

That's why I suggested that the Emperor feed the Rebels the location of an unfinished one when he already has a finished one, but both are fully functional.

I too like this idea.

Other designs would have been interesting too.

Another obvious possibility for the Sequel trilogy is what does the New Republic do with this technology.

Do they make their own for defense knowing that someone else will eventually make another one?

An interesting moral dilemma for a less black and white trilogy :)

The EU in the early days was full of superweapons and that became boring very fast.

I will agree with you completely and then some.

The sexy Bill Will (Billy Dee Williams) Thread!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Good grief!

You just contradicted yourself!!!!  Grief is, by nature, not good!!!!!!  That makes it bad.  And why can't you just stick with the topic?????  Who else agrees that Bill Will is one hot tamale with godlike features????  Who else truly belongs there with him among the clouds????

I think handsome Bill Will was originally African-American, but when his face was scarred, one half turned purple and the other turned white.  This was to show that none of the good man remained.  Who agrees with me on this??????  Can we get some confirmation from Batman comics on this one???

And you know, I think it's really Bruce Wayne's fault that Harvey did so many bad things.  I mean, if Bruce hadn't offended Edward Nigma, he wouldn't have become the Riddler and joined Two Face and done weird cartoony things like stealing people's thoughts and having joygasms.  So really Batman was kinda bad and Two Face was good.  Maybe he just would have been a small-time crook trying to get funding to get some plastic surgery.

Depression can be serious shit, so I always take it seriously because I know that a lot of times people don't, and then bad things happen and good people die.

D_E makes good points even if they are a little overly PC and touchy-feely. Irregardless, just know we got your back esé.

PC?  Touchy feely perhaps, but I wasn't trying to be too PC.  Ah well.  It's true, I take this stuff very seriously.  I know I tease certain fellows (certain people who demonstrate their counting skills come to mind), but I am very concerned about people's wellbeing.  I don't know anyone here personally, and therefore I err on the side of caution in cases like this.  Glad to hear you're really not so depressed, sean.

In Defense of Death Star II

I just rediscovered this thread and wanted to give it a holler.  I like the DSII and don't see it as a rehash.  It's a similar station with the same name and similar, though more advanced design.  But as far as plot devices go, it's a very different beast.

Saying the Death Star sucked by virtue of being a repeat is like saying the third Bourne movie sucked because Jason had to fight more black ops agents who see him as a threat to the US gov't...and they all used guns!  Yes, it's a rehash.  But it's also done differently, and therefore keeps our (at least my) interest.

Hi everyone,

I've been lurking here for years and I've never posted anything until today. I've always wondered one thing: Why is Sean wookie so worthless he can't even spell the word "wookiee" correctly? I've been following him in his desperate attempts to get a girlfriend for almost 9 years, as a 14 year-old who didn't have a friend  in the world, through-out multiple sites (Including PsychoDayv's mangler forum(I still can't believe that ever existed) and Fanedited.net) and all of his autistic cross-forum posts we pretty fucking annoying. Remember the the time he left the forum? None of you might, but I do.

(I started this a a joke, but I think I just depressed myself into a coma)

Posts like this make me sad.  I know I can tease sometimes, but I really wish even all the unfamiliar folks on the other side of the Net or world the best.  I don't think my words would be as effective as CP3S's, but let me tell you a few things.

First, Wookiee was often originally spelled exactly as you spelled it, and it was not canonized until 1980 I believe.  Furthermore, who cares if you spelled it wrong.  Don't let people be jerks to you.

Second, I never ever found you annoying.  If you like My Little Pony, that's a little different for me, but that's fine.  People make fun of me for being so into Star Wars.  You are an individual with the right to enjoy whatever you like.  Your posts never annoyed me.  I appreciate a man who wants to be a gentleman.  You may have noticed that I'm stricter in standards than most of the other guys around here, and thus push for waiting till marriage for sexual relations.  However, I understand the world I'm in, and I appreciate a man who doesn't just rush at a woman.

I noticed you hadn't been around for a while.  My time here hasn't been as long as yours, but it seems you've been around less than here.  I recall you popping in with your thread with the candy fetus thing that offended Frink and me for different reasons and started the abortion debate in earnest.  I noticed you didn't come back for a while and only recently have been commenting again.  I just chalked your absence up to the typical passing interest most have in these sites.  Many have active and passive moments on these sorts of forums.  But you were indeed noticed.

Don't take us too seriously.  You are a worthwhile person, a unique individual, and your contributions on this forum, while important, are nothing compared to your contributions in life.  As Katy Perry says, "You don't have to feel like a waste of space; you're original--cannot be replaced."  (I'm not her biggest fan, but that song has a nice meaning).  Stick around Sean, and know that regardless of your religious feelings, I believe you are a child of God.

The Prequel Radical Redux Ideas Thread
Time

An interesting thought.  It makes me also think of the Dark Cut of Batman Begins.  So many complained about Katie Holmes in that film (frankly I didn't have a problem).  But that faneditor deepened her voice a tad which, according to many, worked miracles.  Apparently her "bad acting" was at least in part the pitch of her voice sounding too young.  Perhaps a little deepening of Hayden's voice would do some good for his acting as well.

That thing, you know, under a star destroyer...
Time

I believe it's from a book I used to (or still may, somewhere) have called The Star Wars Essential Guide to Vehicles and Vessels--yes, the original, not the new.  As for being a solar ionization reactor, assuming a broader interpretation of solar meaning any sun, and based on something I remember reading years ago (so you can totally quote me on this), it's supposed to be a small, self-contained fusion reactor--esentially a small sun inside the vessel.  And fusion does indeed involved ionized gas, so....  Yes, it's techno-babble, but that is the reasoning, I'm confident.

Name the Twelve Tribes of Israel, and a bonus for the 13th.

there actually was a 13th tribe?

Yes!  It depends on how you count it.  If you count Joseph as one, then there were twelve tribes because there were twelve sons of Jacob.  But if you count Joseph's tribe as two (because of his sons Ephraim and Manasseh), then there were thirteen!  When you look at maps of the Israelite land:

...you'll count only twelve tribes, yet it includes Ephraim and Manasseh as distinct tribes.  Who's missing?  Levi, as the Levites were scattered throughout all the land because of their ecclesiastical duties.

In Revelation 7, there is a list of twelve tribes, yet it includes Levi, Ephraim, and Manasseh.  Someone missing?  Yes: Dan.

Now go win at Trivial Pursuit :)

EDIT: When Moses blessed the tribes in Deuteronomy 33, he left out Simeon.

Also, since few are aware of this, Ishmael, Jacob's older brother, was promised twelve sons in the Bible.  Their names are not found there, but other sources provide them.
