The Vengeance crashing into skyscrapers unfortunately took me out of the movie. We don't need disaster porn in Trek.

This part bugged me too. We made a big deal about saving the crew of the Enterprise. We made a big deal about Kirk dying. Then we crash a giant ship into a city that would have easily killed far more in number than the entire crew of the Enterprise. With the number of buildings that monstrosity of a ship plowed through, this disaster must have been like 9/11 many, many times over. Nothing about this horrible disaster is ever mentioned and we transition to a smiley happy ending because, wooo, Kirk is alive again and the crew of the Enterprise survived to go on an exciting mission of exploration. Cue cheery TOS end credit music.

I feel like Spock should be standing trial for irresponsibly destroying a giant spaceship in a way that caused it to crash land on a densely populated city.

The whole scene existed solely for the whole "Whoa! Would you look at all the pretty EXPLOSIONS and DESTRUCTION!!! WAHHH!!! YEAAH!!! WOOOOOO!!!" effect.

I'll re-re-restate that I loved this movie, but I did have the same thought.  I actually think it could and should have better mirrored TWOK in leaving Kirk dead and implying the Vengeance was completely destroyed near the moon.

The film itself was a great ride. The only thing that slightly annoyed me was Benedict playing Khan. Yeh, i know it's an alternate timeline and all that, but Khan and his cohorts were created BEFORE the timeline went off in the new direction. So why has he suddenly changed race? Wasn't Khan supposed to have been Indian? Not a British white guy? But apart from that Benedict played a good villain, even if he wasn't the main one.

I had the same thought, but it didn't bug me at all.  Ricardo Montalban was Mexican, after all (with a clear Mexican accent, especially in Space Seed). :D  Of course, I'm slowly working through the thread and this point may have already been made, but I just had to laugh about this weird inconsistency.  But it truly never bothered me.

What single (Non-SW) movie from the last 30 odd years has come closest to the spirit of Star Wars?... and why?

Titan A.E. got pretty close to what made Star Wars fun, IMHO...

It had a young hero with father issues, spunky heroine, Han Solo type, loveable alien sidekicks, and a MacGuffin both sides were chasing after. It had it's own humorous spin on sneaking into a secure area to rescue the heroine. There was a chase scene in a field of giant ice crystals that could give the ESB asteroid scene a run for it's money.

Did I mention the Earth gets obliterated in the first few minutes of the film? That sequence blew me away on the big screen.

It also had a great musical score, and a decent song filled soundtrack. I played the CD to death for a while.

I don't think it was marketed very well, (non cutesy animated films are still a tough sell) and it wasn't a box office success. Had it come out before Episode One, I feel it could have caught the wave of pent up demand for Star Wars that was building at the time. I went to see it about three times, and I only saw TPM once.

It does have a footnote in history as one of the first digitally projected films. Also probably one of the last feature films to have a honest to goodness Cinemascope credit.

I liked this movie so much, I collected quite a few items. Beyond the action figures, I've got animation drawings, and the now pretty darn rare Laserdisc release. (As with TPM, the LD never came out in the U.S.) I've also got a demo disc for a Playstation game that unfortunately was never released.

The movie did get a small cult following as evidenced by the amount of fan art out there. Alas, some of the fan sites I used to visit have vanished over the past decade.

If Fox would get off it's butt and release it on Blu Ray, I'd rush out and buy it. :)

What a fun topic, and what truth that this film was horribly underrated.  I really don't have much to add to the original topic, but I did want to make the extremely off topic but fully in character point that Don Bluth, the genius behind Titan A.E., Land Before Time, Anastasia, The Secret of Nimh, and many other brilliant films in competition with Disney, is...a...Mormon!

I should restate perhaps.  I don't mind people having an opinion.  Most opinions here are valid and well justified.  I don't care if anyone feels the way they do.  What does bother me, and really only just a little, is that there is a lot of the same kinds of repetitive complaints.  I've just read that George Lucas should rot in the Underworld in so many different ways that I thought I could make a little reminder to lighten up a bit.  If you read many of my other comments and even threads I've started, folks would see that my views are very much in line with theirs.  I just think I'm a little more positive about it all.

I think you guys are missing the point.  I have always been just fine with others' opinions.  It was a humorous thread, and I think it might actually be my third mocking thread of this sort.  I don't care if you all want to trash everything.  It just comes to a point where it's really annoying to hear so much whining.  If folks are misconstruing my thread as a genuinely emotional thread, you didn't get the joke.  It was a joke.  I tend to use winkies when I'm joking, but since I was trying to make a...sardonic thread, I was creating a sort of character applicable only to the thread.  If you read many of my posts, I'm in a very similar camp to the rest of you.  A thicker skin is not needed in this case, nor is a need to deal with it.  The Internet is full of whiners, and I wanted to make a commentary about it.  If anyone else has a problem, I think they're the ones who need the sunglasses, because if I'd realized this silly thread would provoke such defensive reactions, I wouldn't have even started it.  It was meant to be funny.

This is what happens when I try to make a humorous point without using emoticons.

Gosh, please don't misunderstand me.  I don't mean to censor anyone.  I criticize ol' George for much of how things have been handled as well, especially the repression of the originals and the low.  But Adywan started a thread on the new series Rebels.  And immediately many folks say it will suck.  Maybe it will.  But then, maybe it will be great.  I understand this site will attract people with negative views towards the direction of the franchise, but I feel it is often overdone.  Just my thought, and the reason for my spoofing thread.

Honestly, I don't disagree that much out of Star Wars has been disappointing in the last 15 years.  I won't argue with that at all.  It's just that there is so much pessimism and negativity, when I'm seeing several trends in the right direction.  I think things will get better.  It makes me sad that so many people dislike so much about its potential future.  It's like they think nothing redeeming could ever come from the franchise again.

Touche.

Fixed.

Alright, I think too many newbies are reading this thread and think I'm serious.  Explaining a joke usually ruins the humor, but I'd rather ruin the joke than continue to make so many people think I'm a big party pooper.

This site is wonderful.  It's mission is noble.  It's patrons are fantastic people for the most part.  But if there's one thing so many are good at, it's complaining about every new thing that comes out of Star Wars.  Disney buys the franchise, announces a Sequel Trilogy, cancels The Clone Wars in favor of a more OT-style series, etc., and it seems like every third comment in every announcement thread is someone complaining about how it will suck for this reason or that.  Come on, lighten up people.  You don't have to like it.  You don't have to like anything but the OT, or even just ANH and ESB.  But I for one actually derive some (though not as much as I'd originally hoped) enjoyment from the PT.  I enjoy some EU.  I enjoy TCW.  I am hopeful about the future of the franchise.  This thread is a very sarcastic plea.  Star Wars may yet show some greatness.  "Come on, let's keep a little optimism."

Star Wars prequels were mapped out in 1981, only nothing like the way they turned out

I wander if this sort of reveal will have any input in ady's version of PT...

I honestly like how things were fleshed out in this alternate past, as well as is revealed in the novels.  Obviously only so much can be done with existing material, but I hope Ady does his best to follow this as faithfully as possible.

In my ideal PT Yoda isn't even in it.

We are are obviously meant to be surprised by Yoda's appearance inESB so the PT spoils the surprise.

PT ruins a lot of things, even if it is watched in correct order (that is after OT).

In my opinion, the whole idea of direct prequels is stupid. When you watch OT your imagination makes a picture of what happened before (for example when Obi-Wan is telling Luke about the past). Then the prequels are going to compete with that imagination and people will be disappointed, naturally. Not to mention PT trying explain stuff from OT and ruining things (midichlorians crap etc.)

A distant prequel is far better idea (KOTOR game for example).

I agree...and I disagree.  I mean, every story really could have a prequel.  Every character has unexplored backstory.  Usually it's not necessary for a good story to have a followup that explains the past.  But sometimes it's nice to have.  I craved the PT for so long, and I believe that while it wasn't necessarily needed, it could have still been a wonderful tale.

I'm really not excited about this.  I hate CGI.  I hate the prequels.  I hate George Lucas.  I hate Disney.  I hate Return of the Jedi.  I hate J. J. Abrams.  I hate Star Trek.  I hate modern science-fiction.  I hate action.  I hate Kathleen Kennedy.  I hate humor.  I hate new.  I will find some reason to moan and complain about anything new about Star Wars, because it's not the original Star Wars (not A New Hope) or The Empire Strikes Back, even if I haven't seen the new project.  I just know it will suck!

Aha! I thought this might become relevant someday. Check out this episode commentary with Dave Filoni for what could be some insight on the upcoming show.

It's not the new trilogy tie-in I'd hoped for but it's the next best thing. Really looking forward to what Dave and the crew put together. Though I do wonder what your guys reactions will be if he decides to bring Ahsoka back. =P

I hope they wrap things up with her.  She needs to die (not because I don't like her, but for continuity purposes), but it could be handled quite dramatically.
