How about a game of Japanese Chess, i.e. Shogi? Now playing Shogi4
Time

Ex1b.

I have some software you can use, though it will probably require VirtualBox and an older OS to play.  I think it was programmed for DOS.  But it works if you're willing to put forth the effort.  Or if you prefer, you and your dad can construct a simple set and play at home while I follow along electronically here.  It only requires two sets of shogi pieces (which I have made out of simple bakeable clay) and the appropriately sized grid of hexes.

Oh, I noticed that someone posted a file for Yonin Shogi up at the Zillions website.  That's the four player game played on a standard 81 square board.  Might want to check it out, though we don't seem to have any luck finding others who'd like to join us.  Hey, perhaps your dad might want to join us for a game of Kokusai Sannin?  Want to ask him?

Okay, when I wasn't paying attention to positions as well, I did things wrong when you dropped your chick.  As a result, I didn't realize my giraffe was in trouble.  In a game this small, this likely will spell doom for me, but that's okay since I was being dumb and not paying enough attention to positions.  So I will just continue playing despite my obvious disadvantage.

Sorry again for not paying better attention.

Last movie seen

Little Shop of Horrors (1986).  Gosh, I love this movie.  I first was introduced to the story when I saw the play back in 2001 at my first college.  I had never heard of it before, and I was amazed at how the story weaved horror, comedy, romance, musical, tragedy, and parody so well and come out on top.  Subsequently saw the film and loved it as well, though I immediately noticed, "Hey, wait a minute!  A happy ending?  I thought it ended in tragedy!"  I later learned that the original ending had been like the Off-off-Broadway and my college's production: a tragedy.  However, test audiences despised the original ending and Frank Oz and his crew had to refilm the ending, this time with a much jollier finish.

And though I understood the reasons for the change, for years I'd wanted to see the deleted ending.  Well, they recently released the deleted ending on BD.  Bought it.  Watched it.  Loved it!  It's fun to see the tragic ending, the way Oz had originally intended to end it all.  Admittedly the happier ending is probably the better ending, at least for a movie, yet it was nice to see things end the way I'd remembered seeing it thirteen years ago at a junior college (minus the surprisingly good special effects, of course).

Gotta add, MySpleen has an incomplete workprint posted recently, as well as the bonus features to a quickly pulled DVD released that included the alternate ending in B/W without permission.  Both are worthwhile downloads.

Something I really wish is that I could see a live performance.  There are a number of songs I remember from the play that were not included in the movie.  I probably will need to purchase the soundtrack for the recent Broadway revival so I can hear those songs again.

Uh, oh.  Baby's awake.  "Feed me, Daddy!  Feed me now!"

EDIT: This link might be interesting to many folks:

http://vimeo.com/user15343437/videos

It includes all or most of the differences between the theatrical release and the workprint (and somehow the uploader obtained a complete workprint, which I cannot find).  It's fun to compare.  The sad ending is present, but is actually shorter than the BD Director's Cut, interestingly.  I think it would be awesome if someone combined the various sources to create an extended cut.  But I suspect that's just wishful thinking.

Episode V: The Ridiculousness Strikes Back
Time

Not sure if this was ever mentioned before, but it might be fun to have Yoda talk with other Frank Oz voices, such as Miss Piggy, Grover, Fozzy, Bert, Animal, and others.  Miss Piggy in particular could be a lot of fun.  I haven't watched it in a while, but the Muppet Show episode advertising for Empire might have great Piggy lines, even possibly including Luke's name.

I think I keep reversing the letters and numbers.  I have made an excel sheet so I can better keep track of the game.  I like using the Kindle though, as it has the actual cute characters like the official game.  The move I meant to make was...ah crap, I don't even know why I typed G before because on the board I moved my elephant.  Hmmm...I'm sorry I keep screwing this up.  I promise the move I meant to make was with the elephant, and I meant to move to 2c.

E-2c

Hopefully I won't keep making these mistakes now that I've made a board on Excel with the coordinates.  Again, sorry for so much air-headedness.

Anyone managed to download the edit yet? I heard that the link is very slow...

Confirmed download is finished here. Just waiting for the free time to watch it.

Hope you wouldn't mind putting it up on MySpleen.  I thought I had the whole thing, but then it turned out somehow my connection got interrupted.  This has happened more than once, and I can't get the whole thing downloaded.  I'd really like to see this.

The Armchair Movie Critic thread

In honor of the movies that started this thread, I thought I'd share these videos I found.  I don't agree with everything, but many criticisms are legitimate.

Remember the XFL?

The WWE has instituted rules to limit concussions and fires people immediately for domestic violence.

The XFL don't look so bad now.

to be fair, it is easier to limit concussions when everything is an act.

Fair point, but it's not the like the rules in the NFL are sacrosanct handed down by god.

...unless the rules are wearing a magic garment underneath your pads... eh Ender? huh??? :)

Sorry my friend.  I know exactly what I wanted to do, but I was being too lazy to look it up and was forgetting the orientation I just told you a few posts up.  I wanted the giraffe to go immediately to the right.  G-1c.  I don't have the coordinates on my board, and I have the board on my Kindle, and I wasn't using any reference as a guide.

Well, truthfully my board has no labels, so I could be wrong, but traditionally shogi numbers its boards from right to left and from top to bottom.  Since my giraffe is on the right, it would be column 1, would it not?  Yes, only the chick promotes, and exactly as you described.  And though I am away from my board right now, I believe I would probably play Gx2c
