How about a game of Japanese Chess, i.e. Shogi? Now playing Shogi4
Time

Now I've read the instructions to this game a thousand times.  Believe it or not, I obtained the rules when they were extremely obscure, and because I uploaded them all over the place they are now much more widely known.  But I cannot for the life of me gain a clear grasp on the rules for automatic alliances.  Can anyone clarify for me, if either of you understand them better?

It was clearly a joke based on other people's overreactions.

I'm surprised there was any question.  Thanks brash.  People in this thread overreact to everything.  Bingowings, you know this very well, as people overreacted to you when defending the right to ask for updates.  It honestly leads me to seldom post in this thread because everything turns into an argument defending everything Adywan does.

Xegoog, you go right ahead on with your excitement.  I am excited too.  I was just kidding, and my joke really was meant to pick on others, not you :)

By the way, it is nice that you could join us, and I hope you have fun.  I love shogi, and I've played far more since your son showed interest than I have in the many years since I discovered its existence (1996 I believe).  I've had a hard time finding true converts, so this has been a true pleasure for me :)

Thank you. I used to play Shogi many years ago (before the age of the internet). It was a challenge to find people willing to play. This will be my first experience with the 3 player version though. It should prove interesting.

Actually it's my first time with the 3 player game as well.  I first heard of shogi when I purchased and read this book:

http://www.amazon.com/Rules-Classic-Games-Wayne-Schmittberger/dp/0471536210/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1411519804&sr=8-1&keywords=new+rules+for+classic+games

It gave the rules for Chu Shogi, but not regular shogi, but it referred to it extensively.  It also mentioned what is known as the "Petty Diplomacy Problem," a problem inherent with 3 player games, and mentioned that the game we now play is the best game at overcoming this problem.  I hunted down the rules for regular shogi and fell in love.  I'd wanted to play Kokusai Sannin Shogi, the game we are playing, but the rules could not be found anywhere.  Finally I found an online friend who sent me the rules via email: Steve Evans, author of some very nice but outdated shogi variant software.  But that was in 2001 I believe.  And only now do I get my first opportunity to play.  So I am indeed very excited to play this game with you both.  Thanks for joining.

I am not sure what's going on.  Let me review the moves as I read them.  Normally in shogi, every player's move is counted separately (thus all three of us make moves 1, 2, and 3, though in chess we would just label all that move 1), but I am going to label them like our chess for ease of viewing:

First-Ric, Middle-Post, Last-Ender

1. L-14yz, P10ij-10kl, P-7vw

2. P13yz???-12yz (not possible, both are yz, first incorrect), and now you are moving again before either of us, P13no-12op

I think you misunderstood your dad's and my last moves, which were piece corrections.  Maybe I'm confused.  I don't know.

Yes, I'm definitely okay switching.  My move would then be P-7vw.

A little something I noticed is that if I cut and paste the pieces, the cells I so laboriously merged then split back into two separate cells.  So it works better if you just copy to the new cell, then delete the piece from the starting cell.  Avoids problems later.

And Ric, I think your pawn move is confusing.  Unless the cells are differently lined up with the hexes (a distinct possibility), you could move Pxy or Pzaa to the cell indicated, but Pyz actually straddles two cells.

Well, in reality it doesn't matter much except that the official rules say play is clockwise.  I don't mind rule bending, especially when it makes no difference to the outcome of the game, but just something to be aware of.

Hey, aren't you that jerk who kept giving my young friend a hard time for his religious beliefs???  Who invited you here?!  ;)

I have to go to work in a couple of hours and won't be done till morning, but you two can start whenever, and I'll go last.

As far as board notation goes, you can use the grid already provided on Excel if you want (for instance, the black king is on 15rs, rs because each cell is really two merged cells, each row offset form the last).  Or if you prefer to be more official, there is a grid system for the game.  It's on Wikipedia, and you can number the sides yourself.  Either way.

While reading the instructions, try to be very clear on the way alliances are formed.  The specific rules there are a little fuzzy to me.

Those of you who contribute to it (DuracellEnergizer, Antcufaalb, Leonardo, Bingowings, DominicCobb, Neglify I think), I am disappointed that you feel that this little chuckle is more worthy of defending and in fact deserving of further joking.

Meh, this is something on which we'll have to agree to disagree. I'm sorry if I offended you, d_e. Still friends? :0)

My question still stands, d_e.

Oops.  Forgot to respond to that.  Of course you are :)  So is DomCobb and Neglify and everyone else I mentioned.  I just wish we lived in a less obscene world, but I don't want to cause rifts.  You're a good guy, and a great Google detective ;)

I'm the devil and then some!

So everyone knows, a crude joke will always bother me.  Always.  But I understand I can't do much about it.  What bugged me was the where and the when more than the what, really.  But what can I do about it?  Well, I would kindly ask that those inclined to post stuff like that at least please be a little more considerate about where they post it.  But I'm over it for the most part.  For what little it matters to anyone, I will unignore HotRod and just choose to do what I usually do when I come across dirty posts: skip it when I realize what's being said.

That said, I would be, um, grateful if I can think about folks reading the page where I wrote about my family and not worry about them reading that same joke.  I guess what I'm saying is that it'd be nice to edit out those jokes.  I doubt it will happen, but here's hoping.

You know, I get irritated every time I read these stupid jokes, but the nature of HotRod's joke (the disrespect towards his wife in particular) and the timing of it, just a few posts after my heartfelt post about my children and the very important recent event in my life (the birth of my daughter) just was too much.  I get really tired of the immaturity on these forums.  It's a serious lack of respect when people post this crap everywhere.  I mean, if folks are justified in getting offended because someone sells a different make of Glock in Pima County months after Gabrielle Giffords was shot with a Glock, I think I have room to get offended because I devoted a thread to good news and a particular post to some of the most heartfelt feelings I've shared on the net, only to have it shared with a filthy post and a guy who thinks I'm the jerk because I don't like what he had to say.  I'm happy to let it go.  I usually ignore the immaturity from others of you as it is.  But that was pretty low in my mind, and I feel the need to share at least why it bugs me so much.  Those of you who contribute to it (DuracellEnergizer, Antcufaalb, Leonardo, Bingowings, DominicCobb, Neglify I think), I am disappointed that you feel that this little chuckle is more worthy of defending and in fact deserving of further joking.  I get it, it's the Internet, but I always figured we at least had some sort of mutual respect going here where we tried to honor people's feelings on matters in at least some instances.  I'm sorry so many don't see it that way.
