Snoke came off as Palpatine with a new name. Did they have to have another character who’s scarred, uses a giant hologram, corrupts Skywalkers, has a gravelly voice, is mysterious, and rules a fascist regime?

THIS. I feel the same exact way. The plot still works if you take out the damn superweapon as Kylo kidnaps Rey and they have to go rescue her. The only thing that doesn’t happen is the destruction of the utterly pointless Hosnian system. Just have one roundtable scene touching on the New Republic’s efforts to establish a permanent base, or just don’t blow up the New Republic at all, whatever.
No superweapon would make TFA much, much more enjoyable IMO. I thought it was great besides that.
Adding to this, the plot was about tuhe search for Luke, not Starkiller Base.
Normally I’m against color-coded lightsabers, but since Kylo was a Vader fanboy, I’m cool with his saber being the color as Vader’s.

Good point. SG-1 made Ra the king of the Goa’uld, but for all we know from the film he was an exiled serial killer or power corrupted him over time.
Does SG-1 ever say that the Goa’uld were dying before Ra’s arrival on Earth?

Alderaan was at least involved in the plot as it was a main character’s home planet and Luke and Ben were on a mission to go there.
More importantly, the movie doesn’t pretend that we should care about Alderaan more than we actually do.
The Starkiller Base superweapon. I don’t know how they managed to screw it up so badly. It shows up out of thin air while Hux talks about it as if everyone knows what it is, destroys the capital of a government that we don’t have any reason to care about, and then gets destroyed. It feels like Starkiller was spliced in from another film.
Snoke better do something awesome in VIII or IX. I left TFA wondering what the point of his inclusion in the film was.

Yes, that was in the second draft of ESB. That draft was written after the interview I mentioned but before the Lucas-Kasdan story conference where Lucas famously said that “anyone can use The Force.”

The planets of the Republic have grown overcrowded and polluted and Palpatine rises to power with the promise of conquering new planets. This is the implication that I got from the first draft of ROTJ (in which Coruscant is polluted and the Empire is colonizing Endor.)

Obi-Wan should be in conflict with Yoda over whether or not to train Anakin and get involved in the Clone Wars. The OT implies that Yoda opposed the training of Anakin and getting involved in the Clone Wars.
Yellow eyes, looking like a chainsmoker, and Force Lightning should be exclusive to Palpatine. It’s not special when everyone has it.
With the exception of Palpatine and Vader, the Sith should be loyal to their masters and to their apprentices, not power-hungry backstabbers. This way Palpatine and Vader are unique characters who have a chance of changing the galaxy.
There shouldn’t be any references to the Sith existing before Palpatine. This way the big bad is clearly Palpatine, not some vague concept of “the Sith.”
