Estimating the original colors of the original Star Wars trilogy

The distribution of the concentration of dyes is logarithmically related to the color intensity distributions of red, green, and blue.

For all of you interested in some theory on digital film correction, here’s a reference paper:

Thanks for sharing! So RGB is needed because it is the color space of the light filtered through the CMY film, or because the scanner is sensing in RGB? or both?

"Normal" people trying to sound like they are SW experts
Time

When i was in elementary school i remember first hearing from a friend of a friend that there were books for Eps 1-3 and 7-9, and that the ending books got weird with Luke destroying planets and starships with his mind.

I still don’t know what that information was based on, i am assuming it was EU stuff, but i have never been into the EU so i don’t know.

in the hopes of being constructive, i wonder how closely this “its racist” / “its not racist” point of view fits with age groups.

As someone in my 30s, i suspect that it is a younger generation that doesn’t see the racism, and an older generation that does.

In my opinion, just because you don’t realize something is racist doesn’t mean squat. There are plenty of times when i was younger that i thought things were just good clean humour and enjoyed them as such, but only later found out it had other meanings to other people.

And the idea that someone of a given race can speak to what is racist or not, that also stinks of viewing all people of one race as the same. sounds like stereotyping logic to me.

Are these movies trying to be hurtful in their character choices? i think we all agree on this, that the answer is NO.

Is there any possibility that these character choices hit at cultural stereotypes? lots of sci-fi and fantasy indulges in some level of cultural stereotyping. It is certainly there in the PT.

A few things have happened over the last couple of days. Firstly, Williarob was kind enough to allow me early access to the Silverscreen Edition Grindhouse, to conduct some further color experiments. Secondly, I updated the color correction model, and after catching up on the in and outs of film, and digital film corrections, I realized I was working under the wrong assumptions, namely that I should work in the YCM color space, when in fact it should be RGB. I could go into the theory of it all, but it suffices to say, that everything fell into place, and I was able to correct reel 1 of the Star Wars LPP with a single color correction model without green shifts or any other major anomalies. I also ran some first tests on reel 2. Here’s a gallery of frames from reel 1, before and after, and one frame from reel 2. Surprisingly the colors are in many ways closer to the GOUT, than the Technicolor prints. No manual adjustments were made to these corrections. These are simply the result of a scientific theory for color fading.

You never give up, that is amazing dedication. I hope to hear the reason for rgb vs ycm at some point when you have it sorted enough to explain. I always find the process behind new understandings to be quite educational.

The issue really isn’t whether or not the file was made for BD compatibility or not. Even if we didn’t care about that, it would still be rendered with the same aspect ratio (vlc would just add it like it does for 4:3 video). Even if there was more than just you requesting this, the logical thing to do is release the intact film. You can come along and do whatever you want to it. But if it was released the way you want, there would be no way for the thousands if people who want it intact to uncrop it. Does that make sense?

Aren’t there any TVs that let you zoom in on the image? Like they used to do for widescreen?

Depends on the TV, and then even depends on the source used. My TV doesn’t allow the same zoom options for HDMI inputs as it does for coax/component input. It is annoying when i have a HDMI source that is presenting letter boxed movies in 4:3 aspect, and i can’t zoom in correctly to remove both the side and top letterboxing. Rare problem, but annoying all the same. TV manufacturers make lots of assumptions about how you will use your tv.

I am not a member of my spleen. Is there anywhere else I could find this? I was actually chided by a friend a few weeks ago for the fact that I have never seen the holiday special.

You can find the EDITDROID version on newsgroups that is where i got it. posted 114 days ago. [EDITDROID version is one of the primary sources for this version] I suggest you just go grab that for now.

Is there a way to get a GOUT synced 1080p version of this? I got the 720p reencode from the spleen but would like to have the higher resolution.

I did the syncing and made a BD25 version with all the english audios and english subtitles. Also I´ve added PT-BR sub and dub.
I’m considering where to upload it. Myspleen would need that I seed it forever. Mega would delete it in a day.
So usenet seems to be the best bet but I’m not familiar with uploading to it, only downloading.

Spleen has plenty of ppl willing to seed i think, it would not be on you to seed forever.

The Force Awakens: Official Review Thread - ** SPOILERS **
Time

There is a lot of stupid back and forth going on that is pretending to be discussion. lets bring it down a notch.

As far as REVIEWING TFA goes, i watched the bluray this weekend with a handful of friends, and it reinforced why i think this is a good movie. Not a great movie, but a good one.

We had a mix of star wars fans and non-star wars fans. and everyone was able to enjoy the movie. There is a great amount of humor that ‘just works’ in this movie. Finn and BB-8 deliver some good comedy. And for the star wars fans it delivers some interesting new characters, and a good light saber fight.

This movie isn’t great, but being part one of a trilogy, you can’t fully judge the movie until we see the rest. Sure its a lazy answer, and if the rest of the movies suck, perhaps i will revise this opinion, but we will have to wait and see.

At least these PT fanboys are entertaining.

Sure WE are the fanboys…

Oh I’m sure. Liking fundamentally flawed films just because it happens to have “Star Wars” in the title is indicative of being a fanboy. It’s not like I don’t have issues with the OT or TFA.

Who says we like them just because they are star wars?

So, you just joined …

My favorite thing this time is that he used “allot” again, which I’ve never seen anyone else use.

It’s pretty sad when you have nothing better to do than to keep trying to come back after being banned multiple times.

Maybe next time he will use an even longer username

No. It’s not. Both choices have been scientifically proven false.

What experiments have proven that Attack of the Clones is a poor film?

In what way was my statement scientifically proven false?

You are entitled to your opinion, but please refrain from presenting your opinion as an absolute fact.

It is a fact that this is in the wrong thread.

TFA was great, watching the Blu-ray tomorrow with a bunch of friends. I also got the steelbook just to match the rest of my set

One of the things that really stands out to me in the trailer is how amazing this shot of the Star Destroyer looks.

Yes! and my favorite thing about that shot is how what first looks like a Wipe from a star field to the death star, turns out to be just a shadow as you see it move behind the Star Destroyer.

Of course it could just be the way the trailer is cut that made me think it was a wipe, but i assume this ‘trick’ was on purpose, and i love it.
