Friend of mine says the R1 cinematographer mentions seeing a 4K DCP of ANH in this interview:

http://collider.com/greig-fraser-lion-rogue-one-interview

I have a theory about this: we see some of the pilots from ANH with footage taken straight from the original film. Was a restoration finalized to service this purpose? Or just generally for the cinematographer to get a feel for how the era is supposed to look?

Somewhere was an article where Gareth stated that they found reels and reels of un digitized film from ANH. These shots where all on those reels. (Original Negatives even!)

For how well and how quickly they cleaned those up, it gives you real hope that someone somewhere will find an intact negative and do right by it.

I tried to PM Silverwook in regards to posting spoiler rules for Rogue One. But when I hit the send button I get this error message:

Got my projector and surround sound set up. It looks and sounds fantastic. The screen is about 125 inches. I ordered a 150 inch but I underestimated how big that actually was and it was bigger than my wall. Even the 125 inches is massive. Looks crisp and clear too. Can’t wait to watch star wars on it. In the process of cobbling together my own personal semispecialized version to watch. (Using the sources of telecine7s epiv (which is the blu ray with rerotoscoped savers and blaster shots) and just splicing in color matched and upscaled footage of the latest specialized to match the surrounding footage to fix ask the mos eisley bs on the blu ray.)

I would just watch the despecialized version but I think on a screen this suss the difference between 720 and 1080p will be noticeable.

Sounds awesome!

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but in order to obtain the preservation effort ‘Despecialized’ versions, you have to own the official releases. Otherwise the entire project could be jeopardized. Grab the official Blu rays and then I am sure an invite will not be a problem. Cheers.

While I agree, as doing this is kind of a win-win for everybody, I’d like to play devil’s advocate for a moment. If people continue to buy the official blu-ray, wouldn’t that essentially tell Disney “this version is fine, no need to release the unaltered trilogy because we will just continue to buy anything you release, regardless”? While making sure to own the official releases before downloading the fan edits is the morally correct thing to do, the whole “vote with your wallet” concept kind of goes out the window by doing that. Just a thought…

fine for a thought experiment, but it goes against the rules and principles of this site, and its members.

Interstellar

This was very heavy material. My short takeaway is this:

-The Cinematography is gorgeous.
-The score is AWESOME!
-The special effects are very immersive.
-The acting is pretty strong.
-Interesting premise.
-chemistry between Murph and Cooper was outstanding.
-Brands “Love” speech was dumb
-the ending was a little uneven

Overall I think it was a really ambitious and thought provoking film. I think Arrival accomplished what Interstellar was going for even better though.

Pretty much agree with you on both Interstellar and Arrival. although a subsequent viewing or Arrival on bluray will be required for me to decide if Arrival nailed it better than Interstellar did.

“Introducing Jyn Erso” Featurette

Not a lot of new stuff here, but I did find this one BTS shot both interesting and weird.

In addition to the fact that those weird red-hooded monks that we saw a photo of earlier will very likely be a bit more than just background characters, there’s also some camels. Just regular real-life camels, nothing fancy added to them that I can see. I guess they might replace them with some CG creatures, and the SW-universe has had regular birds, lizards, snakes, etc. so I guess this isn’t that strange. Any thoughts?

camels?

A lot of DVD programs block screen captures for copyright reasons. Try using VLC Player and it’s built in screen capture.

and if a helpful answer doesn’t help you, try one of the suggestions here: http://originaltrilogy.com/topic/RESTORATION-FOR-DUMMIES/id/52075. I am partial to the ‘point a vhs camcorder at your screen’ method.
