This definitely needed to be dredged up again.

You do realize that not everyone checks the forums all day everyday, and that when you click on a thread it takes you to your earliest unread post, right?

So people reading through what they’ve missed so far might have input on something somebody said. It’s not unreasonable.

Yes, let’s just revive all the crap that has been resolved days ago, just because some people can’t first read through a thread and then post. This kind of redundancy is the reason why there are so many new pages every day in the first place.

But he was replying to something from only 7 hours prior, not days. With that logic no one can post in the morning, go to work, and reply after work to a conversation they missed.

Chryon, maybe just stop trying to explain or help on other’s behalf, i don’t think it is helpful. Users can defend themselves, and if not, moderators can step in.

I can accept that they are ‘part of the thinking’, but it is disingenuous to act as if they hold the same weight as something that wasn’t cut. What is onscreen is what is used to tell the story, what was cut held ideas of the story, but they might have been redundant, or too strong, or too weak, or too whatever, when the film was assembled.

So even though he ultimately decided the scene didn’t work and changed the film accordingly, you’re still upset at him for having the idea in the first place? I’m sorry, but that’s pretty weak.

No it’s not. Cut content still speaks to the mindset of the writer of the story.

thanks for digging this back up.

sure, but it was also cut, which ACTUALLY speaks to the mindset of the story the writer wanted to tell.

By the time I got to see the movie and find this thread, it was already 76 pages long. I slogged through the first 40 before I started seeing the same posters cycling through the arguments again and again.

it is a terrible slog to sift through.

a) I’ve only seen the film once (lucky to at all with a newborn),

I hear you! it is hard to get out of the house sometimes with young ones.

c) I’ve thought about the film everyday since I saw it

Same

Ok, now for some actual response:

I don’t want my heroes to be “fallen”. Some may applaud a “James Bond” movie where the protagonist is portrayed as a recovering alcoholic and sexual predator as “realistic” or “honest”, but that’s not why I would choose to watch a Bond movie. And that’s why TLJ will be the last Star Wars film that I see in theatres, the same way I stopped going to see “dark and gritty” DCEU movies after “Man of Steel”.

I really agree with your dislike of the dark and gritty DCEU, but i am perplexed that you would lump this with those (hyperbole aside). Luke is shown as ‘not perfect’ and struggling with how to exist as a perfect legend, and a flawed human. And i feel like he resolves this by the end of the film, so I didn’t come away feeling that he was flawed when i left the theater.

But Luke changes his tune after his conversation with Yoda, returns to save his friends, WITHOUT killing Kylo, leaving the door open for his possible redemption, and goes out expressing hope that Rey will get the Jedi going again after all. He strayed for the seven or so years between Kylo’s fall and the start of the ST, but by the end of the movie his faith in the Jedi is restored. The beginning of the movie deconstructs the whole Jedi thing, sure, but I don’t understand how people aren’t seeing that the last act reconstructs it.

Exactly! People seem to take all of Luke’s harsh words on the Jedi early on as if they’re the gospel according to Rian Johnson. Same goes for Kylo Ren and his new motto (“let the past die, kill it if you have to.”).

Just because the characters say things doesn’t mean that that’s what the film itself is saying.

Yes, but that’s an interesting question. What is TLJ saying exactly? The burning of the Jedi tree seems perfectly in line with Kylo’s lines in the film. The movie spends a lot of time deconstructing previously held conceptions and expectations, but at least to some of us doesn’t really seem to fill the void it leaves behind.

Ironically enough I think it’s arguing against extreme opinions. On one side you have Kylo with “kill the past,” on the other you have Luke who’s trapped in a prison of the past. They are both obsessed with it, in their own way (as is Rey, with her parents).

I feel like I’ve said this before but when Luke goes to burn the tree, he’s not killing the past, he’s just furthering his obsession with the Jedi Order and how wrong he thinks they are. But of course he can’t actually go through with it, he can’t let go of the religion and the texts and the dogma and the history and all of it. When Yoda burns the tree, Luke takes that as confirmation: “So it is time for the Jedi to end.” Yoda responds “Time it is… for you to look past a pile of old books.” The message is clear, Yoda isn’t saying that it’s time for the Jedi to end and for the past to die, he’s just saying that it’s time to move on. The fact that Luke says he won’t be the last Jedi and that Rey saves the books just proves this further. Move on from the past, but don’t forget it. That’s the choice Rey makes when she doesn’t go with Kylo, that’s the choice she makes when she returns to the Resistance and her friends.

Overheard in the theater at the end of my last viewing of TLJ:

Stranger to my left: "WOW, that was amazing, just perfect."
Stranger to my right: after a long quiet pause, “That was nothing like what i expected…”

I tell you, this just reinforces my personal belief (which could very well be wrong) that Expectations are a powerful thing, and most of the reason for the current fan ratings.

Oh wait, maybe I misunderstood, I thought you were suggesting the ignore feature. Now I’m not sure what you mean.

i don’t have a particular implementation in mind.

something like the old ignore could probably fit the bill, but i was thinking more of a global ignore. (until a moderator steps in).

if one or two users already read a crapola first post, i don’t think i should also have to read it. they should have been able to have it blocked before i get to the thread. that is what i am thinking. (Moderator currently can only do this).

I suppose i view it as a way for all members to ‘mark as spam’, then the moderator can see the spam box, and either move it back, or delete it.

Very good point. and we shall all have to see IX to find out where this goes.

I just am frustrated that fans always seem to talk about the things they didn’t like.

Remember when being a fan of something meant that you talked about the parts you liked? Its like that article Dom shared a while ago. super fan or super hater.

This is not directed at anyone who posted here recently, but we did have some people earlier in the thread like this. hopefully all cleaned up by now.

… but they cut it. For exactly that reason.

Yes, but it betrays RJ’s feelings and intentions going into this. So, he’s taken off some of the sharper edges, but he still turned the Jedi’s 1000 generation legacy of peace and justice, and the OT’s theme of hope and redemption into a legacy of failure for both the Jedi and Luke personally. It’s more revisionist than Lucas has ever done.

In my opinion, you put your view of the OT on too high a pedestal.

1000 generation legacy of peace and justice? isn’t that a PT thing? The OT’s theme of hope and redemption was not ruined by this film. In fact this film as a lot of Hope in it. We see how there is hope for the galaxy outside of just the skywalker family. It just is taking that hope out of the close confines of a ‘religion’ and growing it into something else. Which i think is needed for Star Wars.

JEDIT: ok, before you all try to take away my star wars fan badge, i suppose old Ben Kenobi did say something about the peace the Jedi brought about, before Darth Vader. meh

Limit new registrations after Movie Releases
Time

We get lots of trolls when new movies are released, and they turn the various threads into a major mess.

We had to limit new registrations one of the times.

The current Last Jedi mayhem seems to have subsided, but thinking proactively, here are some options to consider:

a) always disable new registrations for the first month a new movie is out
b) put new users through more rigorous screening (not currently possible?)
c) make it easier to block new users until a moderator steps in

Han - Solo Movie ** Spoilers **
Time

The amount of junk articles about star wars these days is staggering. Its all mindless click-bait crap squeezing every penny they can out of the same recycled 2 seconds of video, or three words of a tweet.

I’ll wait till the movie is out to form an opinion if it is good or not. But i will tell you that i have only about 5% excitement for this movie, but that has nothing to do with the ‘bad news’ about it, it has more to do with me having no interest. a good trailer could change that.
