Info: Jaws - PCM mono track
Time

Ok I will go through this step by step again. The pre-1995 video releases features a different song being played for a bulk of the beach scene where the kid on the raft is killed. This explains the ‘Some Music Rescored’ notification on some of the video covers. Heres something I didnt mention before but I’ll mention now. I have two copies of the 1991 VHS. One actually uses the same content as the 1980’s VHS edition and has poor image quality. The second uses a print thats much more improved. Both tapes have the ‘rescored’ track although the ‘improved’ version has certain sound effects/dialogue that are more present in the mix. I wont say what these were because I already have a few times in this thread.

The 1995 VHS/LD uses what was essentially the mono used on the ‘improved’ 1991 VHS but actually features the restored beach song. The 2000 VHS/DVD replaces the mono with the stereo remix which angered fans who preferred the mono. Fortunately the 2005 DVD included both mixes. The mono on that release sounds similar to the pre-1991 mix but has the restored beach song. The track on the BD is essentially the same as this but had a few ‘flaws’. I had already mentioned what those were before so I wont again.

Do you think Disney will release the unaltered versions for DVD and blue ray?

Well, at least we know we won’t see a proper version within the year: http://www.ign.com/articles/2016/04/12/star-wars-original-trilogy-heading-back-to-theaters

I don’t see how one confirms the other.

I suppose it doesn’t necessarily, but wouldn’t if they were to release a restoration this year, why would they bother even showing the 97 version?

Because the restoration isn’t ready?
Because nostalgia?
Because jerks?
Because money?
Because Jabba-lovers?
Because 1997 was the year of the Beast?
Because I can keep going?

You forgot because Greedo shot first

Each release has its differences. The pre-1995 video releases feature the mono but with the replaced song. 1995-1999 video releases feature the mono with the restored song and a few minor differences. Not changes just things that were more drowned in the mix now stand out more (Cassidy’s ‘burp’, dialogue in the scene when shark tugs boat). The 2000 DVD/VHS was the first to include the surround remix that rerecorded all the sound FX and did NOT include the mono. The 2005 DVD included the mono and the remix. This mono was mostly identical to the mono from the pre-1995 releases but with the restored song. The mono on the Blu-ray is mostly identical to this mix but with a few minor differences which I noted a couple posts ago. Additionally the surround mix on the Blu-ray is an upscale of the previous surround mix but with a few original sound FX restored.

Yes I have the 1991 VHS which has that text on the back cover and it does have a different song playing during the beach scene where the Kinter boy is killed compared to the song on the DVD/BD. Best bet is getting the 1995 Signature Collection LD which I believe has the unreplaced song since the 1995 Letterboxed VHS also has the unreplaced song.

Anyone by any chance have a recording of the television version of the 1994 Little Rascals movie?? A couple showings have the deleted scenes which werent included on the DVD. I actually taped it off ABC Family onto a Blank VHS tape some years ago but not sure which tape and also if I recall I taped a few other things on the tape and it got eaten up at one point.

I know its not my thread but I figured Id post this for any newcomers. Some various YouTube videos to compare the mono and surround mix.

‘Bigger Boat’

Mono

Remix
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z7PYqhABiSo&nohtml5=False

Shark smashes window

Mono and Remix

‘Smile you son of a…’

Mono
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_oFl_2p_LHU&nohtml5=False

Remix
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kIi6HGt2JeY&nohtml5=False

In the case of the last two, as you can see the word ‘bitch’ is much more audible in the mono. Also on the BD, the ricochet sound from the mono was added to the remix.

The BD does include the mono track so purists are safe for the most part. Me personally, the mono track on the BD is good but the mono track on the 2005 DVD was slightly crisper. Lately Ive been comparing the BD Mono track, the 2005 DVD mono track, and the mono track from a 1990s LD and noticed some things.

  1. After Chrissie’s attack, theres a shot of a wave rushing over Cassidy. At one point we see his mouth moving. On the LD mono we clearly hear him burp. On the 2005 mono and the BD mono, you only hear the burp if you listen very VERY carefully. The burp is missing completely in the surround mixes.

  2. In the scene where Hooper cuts open the Tiger shark, at one point he pulls out a coffee can followed by a license plate. On the BD mono, the sound effects of these items hitting the floor are about a split second out of sync. On the 2005 mono and LD mono, the sync is identical.

  3. The dialogue being shouted when the shark is tugging the boat is more audible on the LD mono as well as the surround mixes. On the 2005 mono and BD mono some of the dialogue is nearly drowned out by the water crashing as well as other various noises.

  4. The sound of the engine exploding is in the wrong pitch on the BD mono. On the LD mono and 2005 mono, the pitch is identical.

  5. There’s a noticeable drop in volume during a shot of the shark ripping the cage apart before the rigging snaps on the BD mono. This doesnt happen on the 2005 or LD mono.

  6. Brody’s scream when the cage rigging collapses is louder on the LD mono as well as the surround mixes. You can only faintly hear it on the 2005 mono and BD mono.

  7. The surround mixes and mono tracks on the BD and 2005 DVD restore a line thats not on the LD track. When Quint raises the cage to the surface and he and Brody clearly see Hoopers gone, earlier in the shot we hear Brody whisper ‘yeah’. This is more audible in the surround mixes but missing completely on the LD.

Ranking the Batman films
Time

I still havent seen the Nolan films in their entirety but when I do I’ll rank them. I saw most of TDK and my memories of it were pretty good. For now I’ll rank the Burton/Schumacher films.

4.Batman & Robin- Well granted I saw this in the theatres though I was about 4 at the time. Its one of those films you notice the flaws the more you watch it. Cheesy one liners, sub-par acting, and too much Bat nibbles. George Clooney’s a good actor but for me he was definitely miscast here. IMO he doesnt portray the tormented character depicted in the first three films. Anyways most of us know the flaws of this film so moving on. 4/10

3.Batman Returns- Kinda going with what a few said above. A little too Burton-y. The first film was a cross between dark and light with a hint of campiness. This film just leans too much towards dark. Its definitely the most graphic of the four films notably the scene where Catwoman scratches the person’s face. 6/10

2.Batman Forever- I rank this above Returns by about a hair. This film falls between the slightly dark edge of the first film but the over-campiness of Batman & Robin. Val Kilmer was an ok Batman and Jim Carrey definitely at his zaniest as the Riddler. Im again going with some of the above. Tommy Lee Jones was a bad Two-Face and granted I like Tommy Lee Jones. Then again I cant imagine Billy Dee Williams being much better in the role since he played an ‘ok’ Harvet Dent. However, Two-Face in BF was just a poorly written character. To vengeful and angry and zany and just a poorly written and portrayed character. 6.5/10

1.Batman- I actually find it a bit ironic that this is my favorite of the four films since it was actually the last of the four I saw. Nicholson played a good Joker and I like the plot twist that it was he who killed Bruce Wayne’s parents. Nice climax, good one liners, nicely film. Perhaps a bit dated now but I think it helped pave the road to where the character of Batman has been taken in the last decade or so. 8/10

Movies generally considered "bad" that you like.
Time

Hmm tough call. Some movies I like may have been viewed as bad when they were initially released but are nicely regarded now. I’m going back almost a century but one of my favorite horror films is Island of Lost Souls, the first film adaptation of the book Island of Doctor Moreau. When the movie came out, it was banned in a bunch of countries and the books author hated it. Now it’s actually regarded as a well made 1930s horror flick and by some the best film adaptation of that book.

But anyways I’m just gonna assume we mean films that are just poorly made but some may like it anyways. Well I may get some slack for this but I don’t hate Jaws The Revenge. I don’t love it either but I might go as far to say it’s a smidge better than Jaws 3. Jaws 3 feels like a Jaws ripoff film masquerading as a Jaws sequel. At least Revenge I watch and feel like it’s a Jaws film. Some of the original cast was brought back, not much, some key Jaws musical bits were brought back, and we briefly return to Amity Island. Of course there’s the flaws. Probably the worst looking shark of the series, the scenes in Amity are at Christmas time, Ellen having flashbacks of things she never witnessed, the awkward shark exploding ending in place of the original ending, and probably a whole list of other things. But it has moments I like. I like seeing Mike Brody supporting his family and bickering relationship he has with Jake, Michael Caine gives a good performance and plays a likable character. And as unrealistic the shark and the situation may be, my favorite scene is probably when the shark chases Mike through the sunken ship and Mike escapes by releasing the air from his air tank. I don’t know. Watching that as a kid just seemed cool. I think the problem with the film is it’s a potentially good film stuck within a poorly made film.

The Terminator (1984) - Original Theatrical Mono Preservation (Released)
Time

Heres a quote from someone at blu-ray.com.

‘While I’d obviously love for the mono to return in an inevitable re-release, at the very least I’d settle for the soundtrack that was used theatrically last Summer. I kept expecting the newer, high-pitched gunshots when Arnold kills the first of the Sarah Connors, but instead it was the original gunshots. I was confused. As far as I can tell, it was some sort of hybrid between the original soundtrack and the remix. Definitely the lesser of two evils in that it’s better than the straight-up remix we’ve got on the Blu-ray.’

If this is true, perhaps we’re stepping in the right direction???
