Well Ive always been a sensitive person so whenever I post here I try to sound subjective and reasonable. If not that I may post something ammusing in response to someone elses comment, usually TV’s Frink or someone. But thats more knock on wood than trying to offend people. I personally dont agree with using vulgar language in public threads. PM is fine but people this site is for a purpose and derailing it with negativity isnt where it should go. Everyones entitled to their opinions but should respect others as well. I know Im sounding like some strong voice of reason but its just how I feel.

A lot of the time especially in this case I try to ignore much of the conversation since the word play is too far in and Im not about to throw myself in the mix (although with this post perhaps I am). Not to mention negativity can lead to the topic being ignored completely in the future which isnt fair. Each discussion here is started in hopes that people will provide their honest and respectful opinions and just build a decent discussion from there. Once it gets to this stage now its like ‘well that went downhill fast didn’t it??’.

HBO Star Wars preservations (a Work In Progress)
Time

I actually have what I believe to be the original HBO airing (hosted by Mark Hamill yes??). Interesting story of how I found it. A few years ago my dad was at an estate sale and bought VHS drawers and holders (thinking I’d want them), some of which still had some tapes in it from who every had these holders previously. Anyways about a year or two ago I was looking at the labeled tapes in there and one was labeled Star Wars. Popped it in and it had the Mark Hamill intro where it shows the all the fandom and stuff before the movie came on. Whoever taped this must have had a dual tape deck or found this on a commercial free channel cause after ANH the tape skipped to ESB, for the most part in its entirety. No ROTJ unfortunately though I doubt there would have been much room left on the tape for it anyhow. Still neat find.

I think the most telling SE moment is not an SE moment at all, in that it was in the original but it foreshadowed what would eventually come along some 14 (?) years later.

In ROTJ, there’s that exterior shot of Jabba’s palace, where a frog-thing eats an insect-thing…and then burps.

For years I thought that was an SE addition, until I watched Harmy’s Despecialized Edition and found out it was in the original.

Funny I thought the same thing too. I always thought the same thing too. It always had an almost digital look to it. Perhaps its because its far away.

You don’t need “scientific fact” to prove that a real tree looks more real than a cartoon one.
Similarly, you don’t need “scientific fact” to tell that the speeder chase in ROTJ looked crap when it came out and looks crap to this day. Just because something has a nostalgic value to you it doesn’t make it better.

Ok honestly. How do you say something that is created entirely digital looks more ‘real’ compared to something with actual props and real people?? Plus the nostalgia argument is a bit invalid as well. If most of us were arguing this for the sake of nostalgia, we’d all agree that the matte lines in the original films are better than without them, a big fat lie if I ever heard one. Im huge supporter of the OUT but I can compromise and say some things in the SE’s are better (Luke’s speeder, matte line removal, some CGI battle shots). So no the nostalgia factor doesnt work here. A big reason why a lot of fans prefer practical effects over digital effects is because theyre physical objects that in many cases sell the realism of the object more than digital. For instance, I will take puppet Yoda over CG Yoda ANYDAY! Yes the CG Yoda had more interactiveness and movement but we know which version looked ‘real’.

You beat me to it. Where’s TV’s Frink when you need him??

One way or another, putting hope on the “profit” is delusional. As I already said, LF is making billions with each new film. Several millions of profits from potential release of theatrical versions is not even worth a consideration (profit-wise).

Not as delusional as using quotation marks for no reason.

And frankly I get a little agitated when people say the ‘majority doesn’t care’. I say about half the fans don’t care. Here’s why (caution this may be lengthy). PT aside, let’s look at the percentage of those who did and didn’t buy the BDs of the OT. Let’s say out of 100%, 80% bought the BDs, 20% didn’t. Let’s look at the 20%. This is either hardcore OOT trilogy fans who want those alone or fans who don’t have BD players. Let’s says 70% of that 20% is the former.

Now let’s look at the 80%. Who are these people? I say this is likely three big groups. Fans who want the SEs, fans who could care otherwise, or fans who want the OOT but don’t have a choice. Let’s say 25% of that 80% are the last group mentioned. Max that out with the 20% who didn’t buy the BDs you practically made up almost half of that original 100%. Perhaps to some of you this means nothing but something to think about.

To a degree, this is a discussion I havent contributed much to lately cause frankly what more is there to add?? All I can say is I wont raise hope til I hear something official. Is that to say I think it’ll never happen?? No but the fact is its not our place to say. We’re just fans. Do I want it happen?? Hell yeah! But I cant give a valid argument on it happening until I get something official in the news on the subject. A ‘person familiar on the subject’ does not answer the question. Anonymity only lessens credibility further. If it says something like 'Kathleen Kennedy says ‘Original Star wars will/won’t be restored’ then maybe I’ll buy it. Until then not much I can add because I dont wanna get my hopes up or speculate to much. I guess I’ll just use the cliche but truthful ‘never say never’.

Help: looking for... E.T. 20th Anniversary Edition in HD? (with info)
Time

That was the release with the fold out cover. I don’t recall if there was a sticker added to verify it had the original cut. That actually was annoying when Sony stopped issuing widescreen for a while. I have the original flipper disc of Last Action Hero with both formats but the later single layered disc had full frame only. It is strange how 2005 we get ET with only the 2002 cut yet that was the same year we finally got Jaws on DVD with the original mono.

The two disc set also had both cuts. The annoying thing was that the back cover did not specifically specify both cuts although the included booklet did. There’s also the issue of credibility. E.T. was rereleased as a single DVD in 2005 with only the 2002 cut and it was this edition that was only available til the BD came out. Id like to think Universal wouldnt have done this behind Spielberg’s back. Then again if Spielberg was ok with this or for all we know requested that then his initial desire to have both cuts available is rather irrelevant. Now of course its reversed and only the theatrical cut is available. As far as his giving into fanboys perhaps that was the case. I didnt know until he said a few years that he was the one who ordered both cuts to be included on the original DVD. However, for all we know this could be cover up for the dislike the fans expressed for the 2002 cut. Perhaps Universal were the ones to order both cuts included. Perhaps they knew the reputation of the SW SE’s and didnt wanna go down that road with one of their films. However I think Spielberg would be the one to have final say as to whats included and what’s not. That sounds more believable.

Its funny how unlike the Star Wars films the ‘Special Edition’ E.T. has not been overly criticized by the public, at least not to that level. Yes it wasnt without its controversies and has fans who dislike it but there was never a high level of fan bickering over which version was better. Probably because Spielberg was nice enough to include both cuts, in perfect DVD quality and anamorphic widescreen, when E.T. was first released to DVD. I dont think this was Spielberg attempting to rewrite history and have this cut replace the original (he wouldnt have included both cuts otherwise). I think it was more like what Lucas had initially claimed the SW SE’s were. A treat for the 20th anniversary allowing fans to see it again and to enhance things that couldnt be perfected at the time. However in Spielbergs case that WAS what the 20th Anniversary of E.T. was. Thats probably partly why that although I prefer the theatrical cut Ive never minded the ‘second’ E.T. and still dont. Yes Im glad the originals back in the spolight, as it should be, but I dont mind having this cut exist as well.
