How big was Star Wars in the 70s 80s and 90s

Don’t forget Kenner brought back the toys in 1995, a full two years before the SE’s. Sure, Luke and the gang looked like they’d been hanging out on Eternia, but damn it was good to see Star Wars toys on the shelves again!
We also had the stuffed to the gills soundtrack anthology, and the (not so) Definitive Collection Laserdisc box set in 1993. I don’t think there ever was a time that the OT was out of print on home video in the 80’s or 90’s.

That Kenner line is the earliest I was conscious of Star Wars, I think. They’ve still got a ton of them at the comic shop I go to and I buy one every now and then. My favorite one I’ve got is a Sebastian Shaw Anakin Skywalker figure from '99 (I know it’s a little later, but it’s still the Power of the Force line).

I had that Anakin figure. It also came with spirit Yoda and Obi-Wan. There’s a store called Level Up Entertainment in the mall near me that actually sells those 90s SW toys. In a glass case display they also have the old school toys.

I am there for the occasional group buy but not much else. If I may ask, is it the community in general or a particular faction/person?

Mixture of both. Every once in a while I run into some obnoxious asshole on there who thinks he’s the shit though I guess that’s typical of every forum. For some reason they just come off more arrogant there than most other places I comment at and that’s saying something. I’ve ran into a few obnoxious guys around here but mostly I’m use to things around here. I feel tense on that site almost every time I visit it. I don’t feel tense here.

If they annoy you that much, avoid the forums and stick to the review section.

I thought they had improved since the old days of browbeating anyone who liked the OOT, or so I’d heard.

I logged out and cleared my history for now. Yeah I’ll probably just stick with the reviews. In my opinion, it’s a bad place to talk about movies or any video format that’s not blu-ray. Yes I know the site is about blu-ray but I like to talk about movies just as much if not more than just the format.

I dont know if this has been discussed but there appears to be some slight differences in the mono mix included on the MGM DVDs and the mono mix included on the pre 2001 releases. This is mostly noticeable during the Police station massacre but it occurs in a few other scenes. For the sake of discussion I’ll refer to the mix on the MGM DVD as ‘MGM mono’ and the other mix as ‘standard mono’. Heres what Ive noticed so far.

  1. ‘Clinking’ noise when the store clerk pulls the Uzi 9mm off the shelf. This is missing on the standard mono and the 5.1 mix.
  2. Some machine gun fire heard in the background is missing during the police station massacre. First is when Traxler locks Sarah in his office. In the standard mono after he says ‘stay here’, we hear ‘ratatatatat tatat’ (closes door). In the MGM mono, we hear ‘stay here’ ‘ratatatatat’ (closes door). No ‘tatat’. Second is after the power is cut and it cuts to the officer in the interrogation room peaking through the blinds of the window and then runs to the door. Machine gun fire in the background when he runs to the door is missing on the MGM mono.
  3. When the Terminator cuts the power in the Police station, the sound of the emergency lights coming on is much louder on the MGM mono.
  4. A bit hard to notice but it sounds like some noise is missing when Reese rams the officer into the door of the interrogation room before knocking him out. The standard mono and 5.1 sound mostly identical in this instance.
  5. ‘Clinking’ noise when it cuts to Sarah crawling underneath Traxler’s desk to hide is present on MGM mono.
  6. On the standard mono, the sound of the Terminators motorcycle cuts in about a second before the fadeout to Reese and Sarah’s love scene cuts to the Terminator on the bike. On both the MGM mono and the 5.1 mix, this doesnt happen and the fadeout to the love scene just cuts to the Terminator on the bike.
  7. After Sarah goes ‘No! Kyle!’ but before she says ‘Come on!’ when he momentarily collapses after powering up the machines at Cyberdyne, on the MGM mono we can clearly hear a bang at the door (Terminator trying to get in). This is only faintly heard on the standard mono.

this is very useful

For a visual representation please check out the comparison video I shared a few posts ago.
I don’t believe the glass shattering into Cyberdyne was changed.

where the sound effets for the machines in cyberdyne changed too?

Some of them. The compactor is different. You mentioned this mix you’re making combines the mono and surround mix. May I ask how you intend to do this if you don’t have the mono sounds to use?? Me clarifying what was changed and what wasn’t isnt really gonna help.

i use youtube videos. this is my very first film im editing. i dont wish to bother you but some of the videos of the mono sounds are not on youtube, i do not own the mono DVD but i do own the VHS from the 80’s. im not a professional. i hope im not getting you upset.

Perhaps this guy could help.

Interesting that this Tweet uses a pre-2004 version of the binary sunset. Judging from the lighting of the closeup of the two suns this looks like it’s from the ‘97 SE.

That’s just a fanpage.

And???

It means the Tweet doesn’t matter and has no value in a discussion about Disney and any possible release of Star Wars they may put out

When did I say it did???

My best advice is get any US Region 1 NTSC DVD release. You could probably get one on Amazon for like $10. Doesn’t matter which version or which cover it has. The mono will be there. I don’t have an audio file of the mono for you to use so telling you what’s changed isn’t gonna help if you wish to use the sound effects in your mix.

If I recall correectly, the DVD had compressed audio compared to the laserdisc which was far superior.

So if anyone does have that laserdisc file, please share

I have to compare but it’s possible the Image Entertainment DVD has a mono that was a tad crisper than the LD. Comparing the portions in the comparison video I posted the other week ago to the ripped DVD file I have saved on my computer the ripped file was slightly crisper. However there’s likely compression factors I need to take into consideration so again I gotta look into this.

The original negative is conformed to the Special Edition, which was not fully digitized until the DVD master was made. However, Lucasfilm likely stored the pieces of the negative they removed, and they have recently been archiving every single piece of film and audio they have. So in a sense, the original negative has been digitized, but it’s not assembled or restored.

Do you know what resolution the negatives were digitized in? i.e. 1080P?

Really hope Lucasfilm has digitized all their OT recordings in the highest quality available. Things like music and sound effects, etc.

The stuff they’ve been archiving recently is most likely 4k, but who knows.

The thing I’m worried about is the original negative of the OT. Lucas said it was in terrible shape back in the early 90’s, i.e. fragile and pink colors, etc. So, I’m just wondering how they’d do a 4K scan on it 25 year later?

I still hope they at least try to do a 4K scan of all of the original pieces of the negative for the OT soon. I do believe they’d said that 4K scan they did recently was of the special edition. Whatever that means. Hopefully more comes out on that. As I know we all were hoping that 4K scan was of the pre-special edition stuff.

The negatives were restored to a degree before the special edition work began, so it should be in okay shape.

Do you know if that “restored” meant they were able to stop the film color fade? It’s my understanding the film stock Lucas used during that time period ended up being poor film stock. And thus the deterioration and bad color fade happened. Which is why the negative looked pink and thus resulted in extensive recoloring and things that people complain about.

At least in the case of the portions that were used for the special edition, yeah. Nobody outside of Lucasfilm has seen the pieces that were removed, but those are supposedly in horrendous condition.

I’m hoping that in the early 90’s that Lucas cleaned and preserved the entire film negatives. Even the stuff that was cutout and replaced with new CGI outerspace sequences, etc. I’m betting that the whole thing was probably run through the preservation process. As I believe one of the first steps they did was clean the original negative, etc. before they even started doing the CGI stuff. So I’d imagine the preservation process was the first thing completed.

One thing I liked on the later special editions. Was I forget which one it was. But it was an outerspace sequence where two ships are flying in the distance. And in the 80’s VHS, you could see a square box around each ship as it’s flying in space. I remember always hating that sequence in the 80’s. I believe those were from the square masks they’d put behind the ships sometimes when filming the ships.

But I really liked with the later special editions, they removed those square box things.

Just an FYI theyre called garbage mattes.
