Does he actually know about the small alterations in Raiders and Jaws? Or was that kind of done without his knowledge?

Especially when he mentioned in another interview from a few years back basically talking about the same thing above where he also mentioned he was gonna leave in the wires holding the planes in 1941. Speaking of which did he do that??

Here’s hoping. I had Grease on VHS back in 1996 (which I recently discovered I still have) and I did have the DVD at one point but that got sold. I’m assuming my VHS had the original sound mix but haven’t had a chance to check. I’ve never owned it on Blu Ray so if this 4K release is decent I’ll pick it up. Has anyone tried to sync any pre-98 mix up with the current Blu Ray yet?

I believe someone on FanRes managed to sync the VHS audio to the BD.

Yes they did, using my VHS Hi-Fi capture of a factory sealed tape. (Pre 20th anniversary.) I have a copy lying around, but I don’t have a BD drive just yet.

Do you have the synced audio file??

Is it documented what Trailers were shown before each Star Wars theatrical release?
Time

I remember a trailer for the second Austin Powers being shown before Episode I, Captain America Civil War before Force Awakens, A Wrinkle In Time, Jumanji, Ready Player One, Black Panther before Last Jedi. That’s all I can remember off hand. I was born after the release of the OT.

Grease is coming to 4K Blu Ray in April;

http://www.blu-ray.com/news/?id=22859

It’s not mentioned but there’s hope it will include the original mix. Grease 2 is also coming to Blu Ray for the first time.

The press release mentioned this:

“Paramount worked with director Randal Kleiser to restore GREASE to its original vibrancy with the highest quality sound, picture resolution and color. The original negative was scanned and received extensive clean up and color correction using previously unavailable digital restoration tools such as high dynamic range technology. In addition, the audio was enhanced from a six-track mix created for an original 70mm release, giving the music more clarity. The resulting picture and sound create an exceptional home viewing experience.”

Additionally here’s a quote from a discussion on Steve Hoffman Forums:

“I may be able to throw one more wrench into things. I have a friend who was in exhibitor relations (or some such thing) for Paramount in the 70s/80s, and he was invited to some sort of pre-release screening of GREASE at the Egyptian (I think…maybe it was the Chinese, but I don’t think so) in Hollywood, using a 70mm answer print with synchronized sound on a mag film dubber in the booth. He was absolutely blown away by the sound, and couldn’t wait to see the movie again just for the sound quality he had heard. He first saw it during general release in 35mm, but then it landed at, I think, the Village in Westwood in 70mm, and sounded nothing like that rough version he had heard. He still comments to this day about what a complete disappointment that was, and he’d love to know what happened to that early mix/release he experienced.“

Hopefully that’s a good sign.

Frankenstein (1931) Audio Preservation (Released)
Time

Hello. Long time no speak. Sadly I still have no updates on this project. The user on FanRes who was working on this hasn’t been around much lately suggesting he’s either focusing on other things that hasn’t given him time to work on this or perhaps he’s just abandoned the project indefinitely. Hopefully he’ll give us an update in the near future. In other news this link was shared over there.

OOT vhs box set? (answer: an OT VHS box set from 2000; the 1997 Special Editions)

The film Star Wars wasn’t marketed as “Episode IV: A New Hope” until around the time the prequels were released. So they definitely would not be OOT.

The last OOT VHS release was probably the Faces set.

The Faces tapes say A New Hope on them, but the Laserdiscs don’t for some reason.

…*checking for verification.

Okay, on the spine yes. But only on the spine.

The cassette label also had the ‘A New Hope’ subtitle.

I have no idea what this thread is, why it needs to be, or why I should care. And I don’t.

It’s almost like you could just… not comment then or something. Weird, I know. But it IS actually possible to simply ignore things you don’t care about or understand and move on with your life without chiming in about every single fucking thing to tell the world how little you care about it. You see, no one cares if you don’t care, so you needn’t feel compelled to let everyone know. Seems like you’re carrying around a heavy burden, feeling the need to leave a snarky comment on every single thread regardless of what it’s about or how pointless and annoying your comment is. Please rest assured, you can let go of that responsibility and everyone will be just fine.

more irony eh? you also couldn’t resist. and here i am, unable to resist. we are all just suckers ehh?

This^

Taking time to write why you don’t care clearly shows you care.

How to refer to Star Wars?
Time

I don’t know about you guys but I loved the 2006 GOUT covers when I first saw them. When I come down to it I really dont know what is my preferred artwork since I have mixed feelings on all of them. I like original posters but buff Luke and sexy Leia strides too far from what I feel Star Wars should be summed up in one image. The Faces covers are kinda mehh. The faces themselves are neat but the covers as whole are only so so. The SE covers are nice looking but the incorrect depiction of characters (ESB Leia on ANH cover, ROTJ Emperor on ESB cover*, ESB Luke and Vader on ROTJ cover) kinda throws it off for me. In the end I don’t really have a favorite poster/cover design but there’s definitely ones I like for different reasons.

*Yes I know this kinda fits with how the movie is now but to be fair aside from the digital release there’s been no video release of ESB with that artwork with the Ian Emperor change.

When I talk to my 14yo nephew about the Star Wars movies, he’s not really that big a fan and has a hard time remembering which Episode number goes by which subtitle. At one point, he asked me why I don’t just call them by their episode numbers, and I said that it wasn’t until the prequels came out that their numbers even were on the box or that Star Wars was marketed as A New Hope.

Then I showed him images of OT posters and VHS boxes to prove my point.

God those were awful posters.

It shows consistency between movies, which I’ve learned on OT.com is generally tossed out the window in favor of nostalgia (just look at the topic of this thread).

If you have a gripe with people who are nostalgic for the films they are trying desperately to preserve, why are you here??

The Shining - 35mm print opportunity (a WIP)

On a related note, I recently got my hands on a factory sealed remastered VHS circa 2001 with Dolby Surround for next to nothing. Going to capture it on the off chance it’s a different sound mix as opposed to a fold down of the 5.1 mixes that have been on every DVD and Blu Ray release this century.

Yes, I’m obsessed. 😉

The tape has no Macrovision copy protection at all. Yay!

Most if not all Warner Bros. tapes I’ve captured had no Macrovision copy protection.

Star Wars vs. A New Hope - Which do you say and why?
Time

Its not exactly being stuck in the past when all video releases of the first film up until 2000 bore the Star Wars title. No A New Hope aside from the side views of the 1995 VHS. Not to mention the New Hope title was already in the crawl from 1981 up until now so you can’t throw this into the ‘fans who hate the Special Edition changes’ criteria. You could also say Star Wars: A New Hope since I’ve seen it advertised on a few occasions as such.
