Shout Factory is coming out with a BD of this film this year. Hopefully the mono is included.
Another one that throws me off is Ben’s ‘This place could be a little rough’ is a different take audio wise.
Smokey and the Bandit I heard had a remix with added stuff although apparently the BD release from last year does have the mono.

To my knowledge there was no other cut of this other than the extended TV version with added scenes shot during the making of Halloween II. This cut got a single DVD release years ago which is now OOP but was included in the deluxe BD set of all the Halloween films as well as the theatrical. So no the theatrical has not gone away.
I watched my 1985 Rocky laserdisc (Japanese) recently and noticed during the final scene that some of the audio was different from the version on blu ray and dvd.
After the final bell in the Rocky\Apollo fight, a piano piece plays briefly before the main music kicks in. IMDB mentions this was removed for the surround sound versions for DVD.

Yeah there should be just a whole separate thread for audio changes but yeah it would be very infinite. I actually think audio gets changed in video releases much more than video does!
I was actually gonna suggest doing a hybrid cut of the DVD version with the missing bits restored from the extras of the Directors Cut but your idea sounds better.
Not sure I’ve ever seen Lucas call it a space opera himself.
He does use the term ‘space opera’ at around 1:25 when discussing the initial concept.
Some of this may stride off topic but just thought I’d give my own views. DVD still remains my preferred method for owning movies. Yes having much more detailed image and in some cases more extras is nice but it’s not mandatory to my viewing needs. Again I’m just speaking for myself. Additionally I feel the extra work they put into a lot of these films for BD is where a lot of the complaints over how it looks stems from. It also depends on how you want it presented.
Do you want it to look like an authentic film print or scrubbed to death so much that the grain and dirt is gone?? Also the coloring. Do you want the theatrical colors or balanced out colors that doesn’t necessarily reflect the original look?? You gotta pick and choose I suppose.
Sometimes DVD is the only way to get the original film or close to it in some cases. The Jaws 30th Anniversary DVD is still my go to copy of that film. I prefer the mono track on that release over the BD mono and also it has the unaltered film without the minor tweaks. Hell I still pop out my DVD-R of my Frankenstein VHS because I like the audio.
Then there’s bonus content. The 2004 Star Wars Trilogy DVD set remains the only way to get Empire of Dreams among other things and only parts of the extras on the Terminator Special Edition DVD were carried over to the BD.
So again you gotta pick and choose. I guess I fall in between. I want the films to be clean but look authentic. I want the colors to be balanced and naturalistic but not stray too far from the original look. And sound?? The original sound remastered to the best of its abilities.

So finally got around to getting the BD/DVD release and sad to report it is still incomplete. There’s still a few bits missing including what I noticed was missing from the Amazon Prime version. The film has a run time of 88 minutes even though the cover has 90 minutes, the runtime of the VHS version.
That isn’t GOUT it is too good quality for it to be GOUT it maybe something else…
But we may never know

I found the episode on AMC’s site so I have some screengrabs. Most dont look to be HD, notably the DSII explosion and the Falcon leaving Mos Eisley but they don’t appear to be GOUT sourced. I found another shot which I think might be from the original, the shot of the Rebel fighters going into attack. I may be wrong about that shot though but figured I’d share it anyways. I used a snipping tool for these so framing may not be 100% accurate. I also have a link to the episode below.

Couldn’t really tell. I seem to remember one of the clips looking a little fuzzy but I don’t think it was the GOUT. I’ll have to check again. It’s available on OnDemand until 5/10.
Slightly off topic and apologies if this was perhaps mentioned in another thread but has anyone been watching that James Cameron Science Fiction series on AMC?? The newest episode talked about Star Wars and I noticed four instances from the original unaltered films used in the clip montages they showed. They showed the original Alderaan destruction (albeit briefly), original Death Star II explosion, original shot of the Millenium Falcon leaving Docking Bay 94, and the original shot of the TIE Fighter tailing Luke’s X-Wing (after the ‘I can’t shake him’ line). I know this doesn’t necessarily imply anything but thought it was worth mentioning.
It was probably easier to make it opaque so they had less work to do on the new Pepsi sign?
I initially thought it was a 40th Anniversary change but the glare appears that way on the Sing-A-Long version, before the Pepsi sign was added, so I’m not sure.
The rotoscoping around them is pretty obvious. Does it look as bad in motion?
Grease sure sounds like it should again based on those youtube clips. 😃
It’s not terrible but far FAR from great. IMO they softened the edges of the people too much that they almost look like ghosts. The tracking of the Pepsi poster is off in a few spots. The shot where Rizzo says ‘With relish’ the poster shifts slightly. I guess the Sing-A-Long version with the poster removed altogether is a bit believable although by a tiny margin.
And yes there’s been an almost unanimous praise of the sound. It’s great to hear the film this way again without all the distractions of the '98 mix. Honestly, the sound and restoration of the original Paramount logos are what sold me on this release.
Looking closer does this look like a digital alteration or perhaps a result of restoring or color adjusting?? This may date back to the RR edition but on the SAL and 40th anniversary releases the light glare on the glass that partly covers the Coke/Pepsi poster is much fuller and brighter compared to the 2002 DVD to where you can’t see through it.
Also there’s been a lot of complaints about this. Look at Danny’s face. This is on the 40th Anniversary release.

Here’s some grabs from the Sing-A-Long version. The Coke poster is digitally replaced with the wall while the Coke cooler is left untouched. The Coke logo on the menu is still blurred and the mic shadow on the jukebox is also missing from this version. Additionally the Coke poster is still in the background later on. Image size may vary as I had to use a snipping tool for these.
They didn’t change the Coke cooler until the 40th Anniversary release. My guess consistency as well although if it was left untouched for the last 40 years what’s the point??
And yes my guess is the added Pepsi poster wasn’t done from scratch. You can clearly still see some matting effects so my guess is the Pepsi poster was placed over the optical as opposed to the unaltered poster.
Also looks like I was right about the mic shadow on the jukebox being added to the Rockin’ Rydell edition. The grabs I used above for the ‘original’ are from the 2002 DVD yet here’s a video that still shows the blurred logo on the menu yet the mic shadow is gone.

Yes. The new mix on the 40th Anniversary release is based off the original 70mm mix. Here’s a comparison video someone did.
It’s been confirmed here that the 40th Anniversary release of Grease replaces the previously blurred Coke posters with Pepsi posters.
Since my Grease 40th Anniversary DVD arrived today, figured I’d post some grabs. As most know, Grease for the last 40 years has had ‘blurred’ posters in the Frosty Palace scenes. That’s because the posters displayed Coca-Cola logos and there was a product placement deal with Pepsi. Here’s screen shots without the blurs that have surfaced online (none of the video releases are without the blurs).

Here you can see a Coke cooler not only has the logo removed but has been changed from red to a dark orange.
When Danny talks to Sandy at the jukebox, another Coke logo is blurred on the menu in the background. The logo appears untouched later in the film.
However here it is earlier in the film.
For the 40th Anniversary release the blurred areas are replaced by menu text.
Also note that a shadow of a microphone has been digitally erased from the jukebox?? This may have been done for the Rockin’ Rydell edition judging from the Audio Commentary.
Or is it just the original “Making of Star Wars” documentary? that’s available in the Complete Saga 9-disc blu-ray
