Frankenstein (1931) Audio Preservation (Released)
Time

Hello. Sorry there haven’t been any recent updates for this. The last major update I got on this was on FanRes a few months ago so hopefully we’ll have something within the next year.

Post 348

https://forum.fanres.com/thread-712-post-43733.html#pid43733

Anyways the real reason I came in here today was to share a new comparison video I made comparing the BD audio to the LD audio. While the purpose of the video is mostly to compare quality, there were some examples where dialogue/sound effects were different in certain scenes which I have annotated in the video. Anyways check it out if you are interested.

Thanks for the offer. I plan to watch it on an actual VCR connected to my old standard definition CRT TV, and I want to capture the audio either way, but if it’s not too much trouble, I’d like to have the one you did as a point of comparison. If it turns out that the audio you captured sounds better than my stab at it, I’ll keep your version.

I didn’t actually capture it myself. A friend who used to copy tapes for my dad and I did it for me. Anyways the disc is actually at my other place so I’ll have to pop over there sometime this week to grab it.

I don’t know why you’d need to rip the VHS audio if u have the LD audio. It sounds pretty good as is for mono.

As I mentioned earlier the Thorn EMI release had an early attempt at mixing the sound in stereo. The LD mono is still the superior mix but that earlier Fake ‘Chace’ mix as it’s been called might still be worth preserving.

The Thorn EMI tape has what has been called the Fake ‘Chace’ mix. This was apparently an early attempt to mix the film in stereo using the original mono elements. Some of the differences show such as the dialogue in the Police Station shootout being noticeably more louder and clearer. However the biggest letdown of the mix is the audio is the wrong pitch. By the early ‘90s this mix was dropped and they reverted back to the original mono until the surround mix was made for the Special Edition DVD. I know someone on FanRes had taken the Fake ‘Chace’ mix and synced it to the BD and had also pitched correct it. I don’t have the track myself but here’s a link to the thread.

The arms were a bit of a giveaway. Dave Prowse has beefier limbs. That was an odd shot for Kenner to pick out of what must be hundreds or more Vader photos to choose from.

Kinda reminds me of when Universal used a photo of Boris Karloff in a test makeup for Frankenstein on a VHS cover instead of choosing from dozens of photos of him in the finalized makeup!

Just curious has anyone seen this photo of Vader elsewhere?? I’ve never seen it outside of this box art which I have seen a zillion times!

!

I think the photo is from the 90’s and most like does have a mannequin inside it. Someone can correct me if I’m wrong but it’s related to the Magic of Myth exhibition. I have the untouched photo in low-res but it doesn’t tell anything more.

A mannequin sounds realistic given the pose. Any chance you could post that image?? That was actually the main reason I posted about it.

Cool. I’ve literally never seen the original photo before so thanks!

The last known edition of Toy Story and Toy Story 2 to have the original Walt Disney pictures logo are the 2005 DVD editions as far as I know, which I’ve ripped onto my computer. The changing of the logo is so egregious for Toy Story in particular, as the logo segues into Andy’s bedroom wallpaper. That really bothered me when I went to see the 3D re-release back in 2010. It’s so shoddily plastered over!

I’m glad I found this thread, I genuinely thought I was the only one bothered by this disturbing trend in re-releases.

This is partly why I’m glad when I got all 3 films on DVD off eBay the other month ago it was the 2005 DVDs of TS and TS2 that were included. I saw the 3D reissue before the release of TS3 and yeah the logo plastering I wasn’t happy with.

So I just discovered recently about the Easter egg where inside the cockpit of the Tantive IV they placed a small Star Wars poster and a Playboy pinup. Here’s a pic (using a slightly blurred version for obvious reasons).

!

However while I can’t speak for the pinup since I don’t even know which one it is a closer examination shows that the movie poster is actually the 1984 VHS which obviously couldnt have existed yet at the time the movie was made.

Note how you can just spot out the red triangle with Hi-Fi on it??

Studios could get weird where title sequences on widescreen movies are concerned when they reached home video. Squeeze the original so no text gets cut off, but make the actors look thin, or use a textless version intended for making foreign release prints with no thought to matching the style of the theatrical titles. I know on my old pan and scan Raiders Of The Lost Ark LD you can tell it’s video generated text over the opening footage, which doesn’t look like the original theatrical lettering.

In the rare instances a title sequence was letterboxed in early home video or on tv, artwork would be used to conceal the black bars.

Maurice Binder got so fed up with seeing his intricate James Bond title sequences get mangled on tv, that he would create separate 4:3 versions in the Roger Moore era.

Raiders looks like it has the same font though it does lack the black outline on top of the white lettering and obviously sized differently to accommodate the 4:3 image.

!

The 1999 Fullscreen VHS and 2003 Fullscreen DVD have the opening and closing credits in widescreen so the original logos are retained.

This reminds me of something strange with Jaws. The 1980s VHS as well as the Discovision release has the credits in the same size and font as the widescreen version albeit they appear somewhat small in the 4:3 image while the 2000 Fullscreen VHS and DVD and 2005 Fullscreen DVD have the credits a bit larger but squeezed in to accommodate the 4:3 (like Raiders above).

This is partly why I hate the removal of the original Disney logo on Toy Story. The logo is MEANT to segue into the opening scene. Now we have the current Disney logo followed by the Pixar logo which then sugues into the opening scene. Not only was the original logo itself supposed to segue into the first scene but the music too. Here’s the original logos at the start of Toy Story 2.

https://youtu.be/1f9d0OMavaI

Now here’s the original logo for Toy Story.

https://youtu.be/2GZ5x1AmW4w

When you compare that to the first video you can tell that the last two notes of that Disney theme are actually the start of the music of the first scene in the second video. That segue is lost with the plastering.

Got my replacement Grease DVD yesterday so figured I’d share this to verify that the restoration error has been corrected.

I had mentioned Jaws. Here’s some screen grabs from the 2005 DVD and the 2012 BD. A bit tough to spot but the first example shows a wire balancing the buoy on the '05 DVD (look closely to the right of the buoy).

!
!

Second might be a bit tough to spot but to the far left is a sailboat on the horizon on the '05 DVD.

!
!

Here’s grabs from the Fullscreen DVD just to verify more since you can see what I mentioned somewhat better here. You can definitely see the sailboat I was talking about.

Again these are subtle changes but changes nonetheless.

The 7.1 mix is actually an upscale of the 5.1 mix from the original DVD release and as a result still features most of the new sound FX added back in 2000. Some original sound FX were restored but not much. The only ones Ive noticed were the original whale cry, Brody pumping the rifle before climbing the mast, and the ricochet when the bullet hits the airtank. Many fans were quite pleased the latter was restored and rightly so but personally I dont think it meshes well with the newer sound effects. There were some things about the 7.1 mix that I think improved over the 5.1. Brody’s ‘bigger boat’ line is somewhat louder and not as drowned out by the music as it was on the 5.1. When he says ‘Smile you son of bi***’ its also somewhat louder than on the 5.1 although ‘bi***’ is still obscured by the bullet shot. You can only properly hear that word in the mono mix. Just the same I prefer the mono mix either way although it is a shame that even the version of that track thats in use now has issues.

Old post but figured I’d share some examples of this for anyone who are misinformed. As some know a lot of the reviews for the Jaws BD seem to give the impression the 7.1 mix faithfully replicates the original mono in surround. This is false and here’s the proof.

Mono

https://youtu.be/EQMZC_7KyIE

Surround (2000 mix)

https://youtu.be/FpxOLhuNXfM

Surround (2012 mix)

https://youtu.be/-MBNYeBP1jg

Note that the last two are more or less the same?? The last one has slightly better balance and it does restore Brody pumping the rifle and the ricochet but nonetheless clearly is not a surround replication of the mono.

Below are some links for Sha-Na-Na ‘Born To Hand Jive’ from the Grease. The last one strongly suggests a DVD release has the original soundtrack. Drums kick in after a fight on-screen and then a guy slides toward the camera and the remixed soundtrack has an extra foley effect.

I know this is an old post but I checked that last video. That’s not the original. That’s the song simply played over the movie footage. Note there’s no dialogue and sound effects and also the song doesn’t quite sync up right?? Most likely the work of whoever uploaded that video. The mix on the new 40th Anniversary release is as close as we’ve gotten to the original mix in 20 years. I recommend that release if you’re concerned of the audio for this film. Additionally check out this video from another user. There’s a few examples in there from Born to Hand Jive.
