The Things We Hate And Love Thread .
Time
What do I love...I went to an awards ceremony today. I work as a writer with The Mississauga News (which is a suburban newspaper in Canada) and I was commissioned to write up the program for the event, which was hosted by our local real estate board. I am happy today because my work was exposed to a lot of people, and I'm proud of that, not to mention that I got to talk to a lot of people and network with them.

What do I hate...well, that's a story for another time.

I enjoy the show very much. Despite the possible bad writing of the finale (which I think is up for debate), it's the best show on tv now.

On this point, I agree with you.

Stop trying to read so damn much into it. If anything, by your standards, the show was ruined before the finale aired. Sylar is so damn powerful now that the only thing he can't do is regenerate, turn invisible, and fly. Not much need for any of those things when you're a walking A-bomb. If the writers wrote themselves into a corner and Sylar isn't dead, than it's just going to get even worse from here.

So you're telling me I should just sit back and accept gratefully whatever gets shoved my way? I think the whole first season has been brilliant, even better than 90% of any other TV show's first season. A story can only work well when it plays by it's own internal framework. When that framework fails (see: Star Trek), the episodes become repetitive and plagued with inconsistencies, and I don't want to see that happen to this show, because it's too good. When the people writing the show start having crap like characters conveniently forget incidents in the past in order to drive the plot along, that worries me. Then again, killing off a supporting character in the comic series instead of just saying "We fired them" is another problem.

It was underwhelming. The episodes hype up a massive Sylar-Peter fight, and in the end, Peter just punches him a few times and the guy goes down. I didn't care for it.

I don't know, did he? I don't recall him saying anything like that, just that he was the one (images of Neo from the Matrix were conjured up at that point, especially since the fight in 5 years gone resembled Agent Smith vs Neo to me).

Sylar's a nut job. He's taking all these powers because it's his duty (that's what he told Mohinder). Nothing he's done has surprised me, with the exception of going to his mom's house and acting all shaken up that he could be responsible for the death of millions.

In addition, I'm surprised that not ONE of the main characters were detained by the police or arrested. Considering the dead bodies in the building, the fact that there was a massive explosion right above the heart of the city AND a dead man laying in the plaza square, it's ridiculous that all of the characters were able to get away scot-free. For that matter, where was Agent Hanson? Why was she reintroduced in the previous episode? Wouldn't it have made more sense for her to show up at the end and get suspicious of what had happened in the plaza?

I've been to New York (that I can remember) all of one time. Sorry if I don't know what it's really like there. Would it have been better to have a bunch of people running around in chaos once the fight started? I'm sure that's why it was done. They could have had a bunch of extras walking around and then going into a panic, but for what purpose? Give the heroes people to save while Sylar attempts to pick them off as a distraction?

Her comments, to me, simply indicated that Micah did not know what her true form was and it could be anything (not that it was though). I don't think there was anything to it except that. Why make the comment? Why not? Maybe she was just trying to give Micah something to mull over. Perhaps make him realize that "things are not always what they seem". I don't think Micah was suppose to be fearful or anything else. He was just suppose to wonder "Is this her true form and will I ever know what her true form is?" How can anyone know what a shapeshifters true form is except the shapeshifter themselves.

Originally posted by: MeBeJediSylar wasn't trying to die. He thought he would be able to stop Peter and make himself the hero. It wasn't until after he was stabbed that he was happy to let Peter blow up.

I don't think so. That's what he said, yes, but it's clearly not what he meant. He'd stop Peter by killing him, but he'd still be the bad guy (no one else was around). All the other heroes would still want him dead, so he wouldn't really be a hero. His comments were nothing more than to make Peter doubt himself. Once he was stabbed, he saw that he was suppose to die by using Isaac's power, so he let himself go (except apparently not).

Originally posted by: crazyrabbitsAfter watching the end battle again, I found it very funny that Niki, who should have no idea what's going on due to the fact that she's never met Sylar or Peter, grabs a traffic meter and beats the hell out of Sylar just for no reason. I'm also surprised that Peter wasn't surprised to see Hiro, especially since the only time they met (if I remember correctly) was on the train, and that was Future Hiro.

Since a bunch of them were together before finding Peter and Sylar, I see no reason why they couldn't have explained the situation to Niki. She could be brought up to speed very quickly and proceed to kick ass. Remember, it's Niki, not Jessica, she's quick to act and doesn't think much about the consequences.

Peter may have been surprised to see Hiro, but there wasn't much time to react. Hiro shows up, stabs Sylar, gets thrown toward the building, and then vanishes. All of 10 seconds may have passed. It certainly wasn't enough time to react very much, especially since he still thought he was going to blow up right there.

Seriously, stop trying to "fanwank" the bad writing to suit your own personal tastes. The final sequence lasted all of a couple minutes. Who, aside from Parkman (who seemed to be busy getting to the battle scene) even knew about Niki? Damn it, I get so fucking sick of people who explain away the bad writing. I don't want this show to start sucking like the last few years of Star Trek.

Hell, it seems that you don't even understand Candice's dialogue either. That was my point, that it makes no sense in the context of the story. Of course there should have been people around the area. it's a hell of a lot more accurate than a city where not one person is on the street. In fact, the whole city is empty throughout most of the episode, and it's never explained why. When Claire jumps out the window, the street is empty. When Peter meets Nathan in the parking garage, it's empty. When Peter collapses in the street, it's empty. It would have been a lot more frightening to see Sylar picking off random innocents as he is battling with the heroes.

For Christ's sake. I didn't even think it was that bad.

I don't think Parkman knew how dangerous Sylar was, at least not until after Sylar stopped the bullets. Maybe Ando figured he could get the drop on him.

Consider that Parkman was present for the incident when Sylar murdered Molly's parents (including freezing them with an ice power), and when he shot Sylar with multiple bullets when the guy tried to kidnap Molly/kill Lt. Hanson. Clearly, the guy at least knows that Sylar should be immune to/able to stop bullets. It makes no sense that he decides to go all gung-ho, especially when he's seen what happens when he uses his gun.

Claire shooting Peter. Got me on this one. Maybe, like others have suggested, he can only use one power at a time. Maybe he was so busy concentrating on trying to not blow up that it would have killed him. She was probably freaked out too. Since Peter saved her, she just couldn't pull the trigger.

Well, love dialogue aside, didn't Richard Roundtree's character make a reference to Peter ALWAYS having his powers turned on? Or am I missing something here?

Sylar's overconfidence was his weakness. Plus, I'm betting that he didn't think the future could be changed, so he had to be stabbed at some point. Since Peter didn't go nuclear in the square, he won't let it happen again.

Oh, really? Sylar just decides to stand there and do nothing when a guy with a sword verbally calls his name and runs towards him with a weapon screaming? My thoughts on the plaza being empty are that it was really late at night. Probably no one around for the short time they were there since everyone else was at home sleeping.

Outside involvement aside (the Company had no reason to close the square off to outside individuals, because they don't have Molly to track Sylar, Thompson is dead, most of the security personnel in the building near the plaza are investigating Linderman and Thompson's murders, and there is no way HRG could have gotten through a blocked off section without being stopped by the Company [remember, he's still wanted by them]), there should have been at least SOME people outside (this is New York, after all).

I think Candice's comments about being an entirely different shape were just her way of playing Micah. He really had no way of knowing what her true form was.

There's no reason for Candice to "play" Micah by suggesting she has a bigger shape. Finally, I have one more question (I swear):

Where was Claude? Or Hana (Wireless) Gitelman? Or the Haitian? The Haitian!!!

I'll say this much. It wasn't what I was expecting at all. It was...different.

A few questions:

-Why were Parkman and Ando so obsessed with going on what was obviously a suicide mission? I'm not sure what Sylar was doing to Ando before Hiro showed up, and Parkman got three bullets in the midsection, so as far as I see it, they're both idiots.
-What's up with Richard Roundtree's character (Charles) yammering on about love and not bothering to explain what the hell is going on? He says something to the effect of, "Does it matter why you're here? The important thing is you're here." So..Peter has the ability to have flashbacks now....?
-Why DIDN'T Claire shoot Peter? Doesn't he still have a regenerative ability? Couldn't she have kept the bullet in his head until they figured out some way to control the power, or moved him to another place? Or better yet, why didn't Peter just fly out himself? Is it because of the nuclear power superseding all other abilities?
-So, Sylar didn't bother to TK Hiro when getting impaled? He didn't bother to stop Hiro, even though he's acting so smug and confident and sees Hiro right in front of him?
-I guess there was not a single person in Kirby Plaza that night, save for all the main characters?
-Why bother stalling with a cliffhanger? Of course Peter is still alive, as he can regenerate, AND is still alive in the possible future (as seen in Five Years Later/String Theory). And what about D.L.? Wasn't he practically dead in the beginning of this episode? Now he's able to walk around without feeling much pain?
-Here's a thought: in the last episode, Candice (the shapeshifter) alluded to being a different shape entirely, as suggested by her comments/actions about being fat. Yet, here, when she morphs back to her natural form, it's still an illusion? Huh? What was with the dialogue in the last episode, then?
-Again, with the goddamn "don't bother to check if Sylar's dead" situations. First it was Mohinder taking Peter out of his apartment, and not bothering to shoot Sylar again, now it's everyone being present when Sylar gets knifed, and no one bothers to check if he's dead? Then, if he already has the power of a cockroach (see episode with him faking his death), why does he need Claire's brain anyway?

However, I really liked:

-the reveal of Mr. Bennett's first name (which makes his role in Five Years Later/String Theory all the more ironic)
-the throwback to the pilot episode with Claire's swandive
-Hiro saving Ando, and their subsequent dialogue back at the Japanese workfarm
-the foreshadowing of the villain, as indicated by Molly
-the fact that Niki/Jessica actually did something really useful for a change (wailing on Sylar)
-Nathan doing the right thing, and helping his brother out (although, how Claire factors into this with the whole "save the cheerleader, save all of us" thing, especially since she had NO involvement at all in the final fight with Sylar is still anyone's guess)
-the fact that Nathan doesn't even care that Linderman's dead
-the ending, which I admit has me jazzed for the next season

Saw 3 on opening night.

It fucking blew.

Not a good movie.

Heads up, here's the official Dinkins Good/Bad Spiderman 3 breakdown:

The Bad:

Kirsten Dunst's singing. Fucking terrible.

Peter Parker's ridiculous symbiote haircut.

Peter Parker's ridiculous symbiote behavior.

Peter Parker's jazz piano sequence (what the fuck.) Don't stop the jazz hands!

Peter Parker's music video "Point 'n shoot the ladies" sequence.

The fact that the above took up more screen time than all of Venom's appearances combined.

The Goblin's butler. I don't use this very often but "lolz." That segment seemed like a 4th grader's submission as to how to "Make the Goblin a 'good guy'." Didn't he breathe in the crazy evil fart gas? Gimme a break and I'll throw a "nigga please" in there for good measure.

Venom was thin and emaciated looking. Hardly impressive.

Venom's CG. The mouth was so terribly animated when the "costume" spoke.

Every fight scene in the movie was CG, and all organic matter was animated unconvincingly and was rubbery/soft looking. The Goblin using his dumb flying surfboard to shoot fire at a 6 story Sandman, yahahaha. Go fuck yourself.

The movie was 90% CG, and 85% of it blew. Watching this movie 5 or ten years from now (why anyone would do that I have no idea) is going to seem like Special Effect Amateur hour.

The dialogue was consistently awkward - shitloads of lines felt horrendously out of place.

The villains' plotlines were sloppily woven together. Monkeys wrote the script, apparently. Listen, maybe concentrating on one villain and really fleshing out his storyline would've been a better idea, two at most. The villains in this movie were underdeveloped and the conflicts they caused were resolved terribly. They tried to cram way, way too much bullshit into the script, like those fat Hispanic sluts that have giant thighs and huge fat asses yet are somehow under the delusion that they look great in jeans made for good looking girls. Way too much sausage, way too little casing.

Many more.

The Good:

Bruce Campbell's restaurant cameo.

The Willem Dafoe painting, just because I think it would make for an interesting conversation piece hanging in my place.

That's about it.

The Ugly:

We got there late so we had to sit in the front row, the very fucking front row, so the entire time I was loaded and stoned out of my mind while bending my neck so I could see this towering, distorted shitheap of a movie. My time would've been better spent staring at the floor, and it would've been easier on my spine, too.

I had to piss wicked bad for the last 40 minutes of the movie.

The Verdict:

F-

I admit it, I LOL'd.

He was at the funeral at the end. I'm certain it's him standing near the front in a couple of shots. I don't know why he's there exactly, but I'm guessing it's out of respect for a former schoolmate?

One other thing: I had to laugh at the end when Sandman tells Peter that he's sorry for unintentionally killing Ben, and then floats away into the NY skyline. Aside from the fact that it came off looking way too sappy, it's ridiculous that Peter so readily lets Marko go, especially after this guy just robbed banks and stole money, possibly injured/killed cops, and just a few minutes beforehand, beat the living crap out of Peter with a giant sand fist. What, saying "Sorry" makes it all better? Insane, I tell you!

I'll say this much: I was looking very forward to it, and I was immensely disappointed. It's a mishmash of plots shoved together, and I thought it wasn't good at all. Let me count the ways...

-Emo Peter telling Mr. Ditkovich to "FIX THE DAMN DOOR!!!"
-the Saturday Night Fever-esque montage scene (because, really, everyone needs a montage)
-attempts at humor placed awkwardly in the film (what, it cuts to J.J. buying a camera from a little girl while Peter is getting his ass kicked?)
-bad acting (Kirsten Dunst trying to sing, Tobey Maguire forcibly making his lip quiver in the last Harry scene)
-dodgy FX in most parts (not the Sandman forming sequence, because that was great)
-unintentional laughs (How's the pie? SOOOO good!)
-lack of Brock/symbiote until end (what, you think shoving the main villain 25 minutes from the end is supposed to be edgy and cool? Screw off. It was goddamn pathetic how they wasted a great opportunity.)
-useless supporting characters (Gwen Stacy? Pawn for Peter to get back at MJ. Captain Stacy? Glorified cameo. Flash Thompson? Are you kidding me?)
-bad moments galore, including:
--the butler conveniently neglecting to tell Harry something about his father until the right moment, and even that's stretching it (how does the butler know what the glider knife pattern looks like? Cleaning a dead man's wound????)
--Venom not bothering to go after a defenseless Peter at the cathedral
--how Brock knows where Mary Jane lives, and how he knows when she leaves for work
--Sandman saying "I'm sorry" to Peter, and he actually accepts the apology, even though the guy has robbed (and possibly killed), as well as being responsible for the death of Uncle Ben
-the ludicrous nuclear testing facility, located in the middle of a field surrounded by a fence

4 out of 10. Could have been better with more editing and a more thought-out script, but wasn't that good at all.

That's my short review.

Man, I was so jazzed about seeing this, and man, I was so let down. I trust you folks can make your own opinions about this film, but there was a whole LOT of stuff missing from the final cut, including:

(Copied from IMDB Forums)

I can’t remember MJ’s speech which appears in the trailers:

Sandman & family - construction battle
Notice that the Sandman background was a complete subplot which was cut from the movie. The doctor would go to the police and together they would go to Penny and ask her to stop her father. Penny and Sandman’s ex-wife appear at the construction site when Sandman is just about to smack Spider-Man and asks her father to stop it all, and that she understands.

Venom - construction battle
Some missing Venom action at the construction battle.

Sandman’s face in the trailer is visible, while in the movie it was completely mud instead of a human face.

Black and color
Just an alternate shot. In the movie, his mirror reflection is black.

However, if and when a special edition is released, and they don’t have this stuff on there, I’m going to see if I can attempt to do an edit or something. Maybe even a behind-the-scenes thing like Building Empire. I’ve got the leaked trailer, loads of on-set pictures, press kit photos, interviews, Comicon roundtables, the whole shebang.
