Opinion Poll on Go-Mer-Tonic

I'm sure people are starting to, I'm just saying that if you feel the conversation is going nowhere or if you'd rather not continue talking to him because he's derailing a thread, then don't.

That's the problem. He's going into EVERY thread and derailing. Having a different opinion is all well and good, but when you give someone advice, and he continues to bait posters and derail threads, that is trolling, plain and simple. Why should I even bother commenting on anything? He's just going to make this into a post about George Lucas. Every single post he makes is all about "how George would have done this" or "Lucas knew what he was doing" and so on. It's annoying, it's redundant, and it's useless.

Having an opinion is one thing. Ceaselessly baiting posters into flame wars because of his admiration for a certain individual is quite another matter. I didn't realize how bad this guy is. I hope you look up his name on Google and see what he's posted.

Apocalypse Now - Workprint (now available) (Released)

Interesting. I bought the "Complete Dossier" today, and I was surprised at how sparse the extras were. Sure, there's a couple interesting features, but no workprint or "Hearts Of Darkness" were included. That sucks. I'd be interested in obtaining a copy of the workprint, and I have stuff from here I could trade, I guess.

What could you expect? It's very rare for a company to release a workprint of a movie. We were really lucky to even the workprint of Legend. I'm sure Hearts of Darkness is stuck in legal limbo otherwise they would have released it by now.

I'd expect that they not port over footage from an obviously crap source and decide to stick it on the disc. I'm sure they have a master copy in the Coppola archives...somewhere in there. Seriously, the quality of the deleted footage on that disc is no better than what I got from BigRob. And if you are talking about the Ultimate Edition of Legend, there's only the U.S. and international cuts on there. I don't think it was released commercially, at least, not that I remember.

Also, my Paypal check cleared. That means good news.

Well, the hierarchy usually goes something like this:

Movies
Book of movie
Radio drama (book of movie and radio drama might be swapped)
Novels, comics, etc all fall under here.

So basically, if it takes place in a movie, it overrides everything.

If I'm not mistaken, the Infinities line is an alternate "What if?" series. I know that they also changed the comics within the last year or so to include a logo that says "this stuff may or may not be canon". The comics use to actually write stories that would fit in canon. Now, I don't think they even bother.

Infinities is defenitely non-canon. They have some bizarre stuff in there. IIRC, they had one were Chewbacca crash-landed the Millenium Falcon on earth and became bigfoot.

Actually, I think that was Star Wars Tales (featuring Skippy The Jedi Droid). Indiana Jones found him many years later, crying over Han's skull.

I think one set of Infinities, for ROTJ, ended with Yoda blowing up Coruscant, and the Emperor as well, with the second Death Star. Darth Vader also got a white (!!!) suit of armor. Leia also became a Jedi.

That's hilarious. Call Disney up, and they give you a curt answer and abruptly hang up? The product may be real, but he's full of hyperbole.

BTW, that script is so cool. Congratulations!

McCallum on Jar Jar & Kids before TPM came out
Time
The first time I saw TPM, it was on opening weekend, up here at the Famous Players Coliseum in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada. For an afternoon show, it was relatively busy, but not overly crowded (and this is one of the largest theatres in the GTA). I guess all the diehard fans had come the night before. Anyway, watching the film, I found that everyone was very subdued. No one clapped for the title crawl, no shouts of excitement when the lightsabers first turn on. No surprise when Darth Maul showed up. It's like...I think people had read some of the mixed reviews and were wary. Making a character that does stupid things and doesn't serve the plot (no, he doesn't do anything; the reason he's still alive is because people felt sorry for him and did him favors) does NOT make a good film. That said, I thought there were some interesting ideas in the film as well that were never realy explored (Trade Federation, what Naboo society is like, etc.)

Ultimate Fantastic Four wasn't too bad in the beginning, but by issue 25, it was pretty much right back to where the original comic series was, as in they have acquired all their signature technology (Fantasticar, H.E.R.B.I.E., suits, you name it). Check it out, but don't expect to be floored.

Ultimate X-Men also has a few interesting arcs, like "Cry Wolf", that one with Mr. Sinister, "World Tour" (and the issue after that with Prof X leaving) and "Blockbuster", which is basically a non-stop Wolverine beatdown for six issues. All in all, though, it's kind of goofy. There are a couple stories ("Phoenix", "Fire and Brimstone") which are just plain silly.

Ultimate Spider-Man is interesting enough (and has enough plot twists) to satisfy anyone. The "Hobgoblin" or Black Cat/Mary Jane depression arcs are pretty good stories.

Preserving the...<em>cringe</em>...Star Wars Holiday Special (Released)
Time
Well, there's some cast & crew comments culled from various sources on the StarWarsHolidaySpecial.com website, as well as the Fox News clip and TVLand "100 Unexpected Moments of Sci-Fi" clip. Or perhaps you need the caption of Boba Fett's 1980 toy pre-release caption that mentions the HS in this article. The script and BTS phots are on there, but I assume you already have them.

And if you want something terminally bad, go find the review of the "Christmas In The Stars" album on X-Entertainment.com, grab the title track and have it play over the end credits. BWA-HA-HA!

There is a fan-made set of Chewbacca's family on this site. A curiosity, but it's something.

And if you need a picture of Steve Binder, there's a small picture of him here. It's for the Elvis Comeback Special, but he was the director of that in addition to his work on the Holiday Special.

Jedi as ninja

Uh...yeah. Personally, I think it was a waste to put more unneeded explanation into the origins of the Jedi Order. When I watch Mace Windu, I know that he's just out there kicking droid ass and taking names, not perfecting his Juyo style. In addition, there is no way in hell anyone will ever convince me that the CGI manipulation of Yoda to do backflips and ridiculous moves can be attributed to the fact that he is proficient in his Otaru form. It's a CGI spectacle, a chance to show off the latest effects. That's it. I consider all lightsaber combat the same, whether it's someone just learning, or someone like Yoda who's practiced for centuries. The lightsaber is an "elegant" weapon.

my memory isn't that bad, is it? (in SW '77 - Luke misses with the grappling hook?)

Sadly, the only release of the OOT I own is the Faces set, and having seen the original numerous times, I can almost assure you that the shot wasn't in that release. I'm fairly certain this was on a television broadcast, and I think it was one of the first times I saw the film on television. I haven't read the adaptation, listened to the radio drama or anything else like that. For one person to state something odd is one thing, but when numerous unrelated individuals are coming up with the same story, that's more than just chance. And, as I recall, movies have been released before with numerous or minor changes for television (Halloween, The Thing, etc.). Wasn't there some sort of "Lost Cut" that has apparently a large percentage of added or changed footage?

I think Lucas did an admirable job of making the prequels fit in with the classic trilogy.

I think he did a better job of that than he did at making ESB and ROTJ fit in with ANH.

Go-Mer, that statement takes away what little credibility you had left. CGI yoda and puppet yoda work better than puppet yoda and puppet yoda? Padme dying but Leia remembering her? Jedi not becoming one with the force after death? You've got to be shitting me.

Instead of yelling at people, you should try to compare views.

The reason why the prequels "attempt" to fit in with the OT is because Lucas crammed so many "bridge" moments in ROTS that are supposed to be segues into ANH. If you didn't have that 20 minute period at the end where all the "pieces are set", if you will, then the prequels would do little to connect to the OT.
