Do you think Disney will release the unaltered versions for DVD and blue ray?

Well I view it 3 ways. You have fans who prefer the OUT, fans who prefer the SE (any of them), and fans who aren't concerned otherwise and will watch the film's regardless of what versions they are. When you break it down the real battle is only between the first two groups of fans. The last will be happy with whatever. So I wouldn't say the OUT fans are a minority but they shouldn't be the target audience that Disney's aiming for should they reissue the OUT. As much as I prefer the OUT over the SE, I'm not gonna be part of the crowd that goes 'you're not a true SW fan if you like the SE's' or vice versa. If the originals are to be issued again, Disney should package it with the SE, whether it's a previously released version or a new edit, to please both camps. As I said the third group will probably be pleased with whatever.

I definitely agree that both should be packaged together. The SE, like it or not, is now an irreversible part of the OT's history, and should be preserved as such alongside the originals.

When you say the SE should be preserved, are you talking about the most recent SE or all of them? And if Lucas decided to re-release the SE on blu-ray again with a few more changes, would you want those preserved too?

That is the nature of preservation. It's the reason why we even have people on here preserving the Holiday Special, which is also a much-derided blemish on the franchise. Preserve all versions of the films - OUT, '97 SE, '04 SE, '11 SE. Even if Lucasfilm releases another version.

Didn't Team Negative 1 say that after they do the OUT, they might do the 97se and the prequels?

That might reassure me in another universe where I knew how much longer they have til they finish the OUT. I don't mean to be crass or rude by that but it is true. I'm still patiently waiting :)

Also, Valeyard, "Theatrical Preservation" is incorrect terminology since you're not preserving anything in particular. What you're doing is a reconstruction of the Theatrical version.

I know you said you didn't want to use the Blu-ray for this project, but how hard would it be to incorporate it and what are the cons of using it? On a technical level it's a better scan than the DVD/HDTV version because of the digital source used for the 2011 restoration. Maybe you could use kk650's Regrained and Recolored version as the source instead of the actual Blu-ray.

Hi everybody! I am new to this forum, just subscribed to say thank you to Harmy for the marvellous work he did to the trilogy, and to post a question: will you ever consider to remove the annoying quotes: "EPISODE V-VI" from tESB and ROTJ beginning titles?

Imho that would be the ultimate step to reach perfection!

Why would he remove something that was integral to the theatrical prints of those movies?

Is there no reason to use the 2011 Blu-ray? I was under the impression that it was your base video for all three films.

Also are you going to add any commentary tracks? That's what I was hoping to hear really when I asked about audio.

I think the Blu ray just goes without saying. His samples he has posted online so far have been based on the Blu ray and the 35mm scan.

And I think the commentary audio is also considered standard for his v2.x releases, right?

Ah okay. I obviously haven't paid enough attention to his 2.x release patterns then. That makes oodles of sense now, thank you.

That was before the team -1 got the 35m prints, if I'm not mistaken all projects from now on will be based on original 35mm negative scans that are OOT. Please someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Yes I guess that's a good point. I just like consistency, even in a case like this one.

Do you think Disney will release the unaltered versions for DVD and blue ray?
Time

Let's play a little game here.

So Disney announces a Blade Runner-like Collector's Edition. It includes all cuts of the OT and PT and various bonus features and documentaries. What exactly would they include on the disc? What would be forever lost to the Star Wars annals?

I've listed all possible audio selections for each cut that I can think of. Since this would be a Blu-ray release, I think it's safe to assume that most every main mix would be mastered in DTS-HD MA while secondary/bonus mixes would be something like LPCM.

Since a lot of people are asking for SE to have branching, I'd also like to know how that would work on a technical level since the color and grain levels vary wildly with each newer release. What would be the "definitive" picture for the SE in terms of this?

Here is the list:

Star Wars

  1. 1977 Six Track Mix
  2. 1977 Stereo Mix
  3. 1977 Mono Mix
  4. 1985 Laserdisc Remix
  5. 1993 Definitive Collection Remix
  6. 1993 Commentary
  7. Isolated Score
  8. Maybe a new commentary???
  9. Commentary for the Visually Impaired

The Empire Strikes Back

  1. 1980 Six Track Mix
  2. 1980 Stereo Mix
  3. 1980 Mono Mix
  4. 1985 Laserdisc Remix
  5. 1993 Definitive Collection Remix
  6. 1993 Commentary
  7. Isolated Score
  8. Maybe a new commentary???
  9. Commentary for the Visually Impaired

Return of the Jedi

  1. 1983 Six Track Mix
  2. 1983 Stereo Mix
  3. 1985 Laserdisc Remix
  4. 1993 Definitive Collection Remix
  5. 1993 Commentary
  6. Isolated Score
  7. Maybe a new commentary???
  8. Commentary for the Visually Impaired

1997 SE

  1. 5.1 Theatrical Mix
  2. 2.0 Theatrical Mix

2004 SE

  1. 5.1 DVD Mix (Correct channels)
  2. 2.0 DVD Mix (Correct channels)
  3. DVD Commentary
  4. starwars.com Commentary

2011 SE

  1. 6.1 Blu-ray Mix
  2. DVD Commentary
  3. starwars.com Commentary
  4. BD Archival Commentary

I imagine that the PT would be able to support seamless branching more so than any GOUT-97-04-11 kind of branching. This would include the Theatrical cuts of TPM and AOTC.

The Phantom Menace

  1. 6.1 Mix
  2. 2.0 Mix
  3. DVD Commentary
  4. BD Archival Commentary

Attack of the Clones

  1. 6.1 Mix
  2. 2.0 Mix
  3. DVD Commentary
  4. BD Archival Commentary

Revenge of the Sith

  1. 6.1 Mix
  2. 2.0 Mix
  3. DVD Commentary
  4. BD Archival Commentary

I'd also like to see a library of bonus features and documentaries like the 2004 Bonus Disc Empire of Dreams documentary and From Star Wars to Jedi (especially since they just uploaded it to Youtube). If Warner Bros. can squeeze all those Standard-Def featurettes and documentaries onto the third disc of my 30th Anniversary set, then I'm sure Disney can do something similar, possibly even with two discs instead of just one.

Complete List of Home Video Releases?
Time

Can we make an official list of every NTSC region home video release? I've been trying to wrap my head around all the older pre-DVD releases to know what has which version of the films but I haven't had much luck. To be specific, I want to know any and all NTSC VHS, Laserdisc, DVD, and Blu-ray releases, US or Japan.

I'll maybe edit this top post so we can have a running count.

Info Wanted: What are the "essential" OT fan-edits to have?
Time

Between this thread and my previous thread about the prequels, you can easily tell how new I am here.

I’ve got the Despecialized Editions, but I’ve been digging deeper in the forums since then and I’m wondering what the most popular/“essential” fan-edits of the OT are to own.

Sorry if this comes off as spoonfeeding, and if so I’ll just keep trying to learn about all this.

EDIT: I also meant to include fan-preservations like Puggo as well.
