Episode VIII : The Last Jedi - Discussion * NON SPOILER * THREAD
Time

So TFA was too much like SW, and TLJ sucks because it is not just like SW. OK.

It’s not that. There are certain aspects to the way, for example, the Force is portrayed in the Original Trilogy by those who make overt use of it—how they control it, and how it controls them. This movie seems to color use of the Force, subtle or overt, in a different fashion than the OT does and in a way that people feel recolors certain bits of the OT in a way they dislike.

That’s still non-spoilery, but it’s as close to not-nonspoilery as I can get and still explain.

This definitely needed to be dredged up again.

You do realize that not everyone checks the forums all day everyday, and that when you click on a thread it takes you to your earliest unread post, right?

So people reading through what they’ve missed so far might have input on something somebody said. It’s not unreasonable.

Yes, let’s just revive all the crap that has been resolved days ago, just because some people can’t first read through a thread and then post. This kind of redundancy is the reason why there are so many new pages every day in the first place.

But he was replying to something from only 7 hours prior, not days. With that logic no one can post in the morning, go to work, and reply after work to a conversation they missed.

Okay, yes, I now realize I mixed which post he was quoting, because I posted again before he quoted me and I thought he quoted the second one. But my point still stands. Telling people they need to stop name calling does not not-further-discussion if it encourages people to actually be civil.

So please, let’s be civil and get back on topic.

Expand what you quoted here:

There was a back and forth with people calling each other (or their argument) weak. I said that doesn’t further discussion. Then I said, on a different tack, that I feel I need to watch the film again because my mind is blurry with how I, myself feel about particular scenes. Then I got called out for not furthering discussion by saying so, suggesting I am a hypocrite.

Saying I need to watch the film again, in a thread about the film, can be considered part of the discussion. I don’t need to explain the whole of why I feel as such in the same post as saying so.

So even though he ultimately decided the scene didn’t work and changed the film accordingly, you’re still upset at him for having the idea in the first place? I’m sorry, but that’s pretty weak.

I think your powers of comprehension and deduction are pretty weak. It’s pretty obvious in both the initial post you replied to and the below one that he is not just talking about that one deleted scene.

I think your powers of being able to engage in a civil discussion without acting rude and immature are pretty weak.

I think that calling each other (or each other’s arguments) “weak” is not actually helping to further the discussion, but tantamount to name calling.

And what does this post do, exactly, that helps further the discussion?

It discusses my current state of mind about the film.

What? How?

Don’t you start. I don’t need to write a wall of text to back up a simple comment about my current feelings on the film.

My current feelings are: I need to watch it again. And I wish people in this thread could try being civil for a change.

Yes, but it betrays RJ’s feelings and intentions going into this. So, he’s taken off some of the sharper edges, but he still turned the Jedi’s 1000 generation legacy of peace and justice, and the OT’s theme of hope and redemption into a legacy of failure for both the Jedi and Luke personally. It’s more revisionist than Lucas has ever done.

I think your powers of being able to engage in a civil discussion without acting rude and immature are pretty weak.

Says the one that admits to being snarky whenever they reply.

This:

“I think your powers of comprehension and deduction are pretty weak.”

is not “being snarky.”

It’s just straight up hostile and nasty.

Or we can try to stop being toxic altogether.

Like, attacking me for saying I need to rewatch the film by insinuating that my simply saying so makes me a hypocrite.

It discusses my current state of mind about the film. I’ve been talking about it, and hearing other people talk, but I need to watch it again because I begin to forget the reasons for which I had opinions.

Lol… thanks to most for understanding what I meant. I’ve not even brought my 4-year old to a theatre yet and won’t until he’s proven he can sit still without talking at all throughout.

Watch out, it doesn’t necessarily go away with age. Mother-in-law. Just saying.

I told my daughter beforehand about the big dark room with a big screen on one wall and a lot of people there, and I explained that she needed to be quiet because we don’t want to bother the other people watching.

She got up and walked back and forth a bit along the aisle, and a few times went and sat on the stairs next to our seats, but when I reminded her twice that she needed to be quiet and not bother people, she did pretty well for a 2 year old.

(No, I didn’t and wouldn’t take her to see TLJ.)

There are deleted scenes from the Prequels that improve the storyline (like the Birth of the Rebellion, or Padme’s Visit to her Parents’ House). And I have edits that reinsert them. Also, there are films, like Superman: The Richard Donner Cut, that are developed directly from the standpoint of reintroducing deleted scenes.

So discussing scenes that made it to film but weren’t included, as evidence of where the film creator was going with it, is valid.

As someone who disliked the movie said previously, new Star Wars just isn’t for them anymore. I get the disappointment, I don’t get the anger.

5 Stages of Grief.

Shock. Anger. Bargaining. Depression. Acceptance.

They grieve over what they knew or thought Star Wars to be. That is to say, they don’t like RJ’s “certain point of view.” This new film casts a different light on the previous films, given context with them, and this then is a sort of cannot-unsee experience for them and they are having to cope with it.

They might be able to come to accept it. They might not. But they’re not there yet.

I liked TLJ, and so I don’t agree with their assessment. But I can understand it, and I don’t think telling them they’re fools for being angry is warranted. They’ll get over it. Just give them time.

May I ask how old you are?

Well ok then. Point is it’s kind of silly to say you’re doomed to be alone forever at any point, but especially if you’re like 19.

With that said I have no idea how old you are, hence the question.

I’m pretty sure I’m doomed to be alone. I’m a lot older than 19. I’m older than two 19s put together.

You never know, Warb.
