Difference in quality of laserdisc players
Time
Hey there. Well I'm in the UK, so playing PAL laserdiscs is a must - also importing a player from the US would be a bit crazy now they've done away with surface mail and I'd likely need a step-down power converter.

Cool - thanks for that link with the comparisons! So do you reckon S-video is the best way to go with the pioneers..?

Right now my TV is a 28" CRT (with the flat screen front), although I'd like to go for a LCD in the near future, but am concerned laserdiscs will look worse on it... Is there a way to make a LD player look better on a LCD?

Yet another question - is there much difference in RF Demodulators for getting the DD/AC3 to work with my 5.1 amp?

Many thanks for answering all my questions - I can't thank you enough, as this is info I've been trying to find out for a long time to little or no avail.

Info: James Bond - Laserdisc Preservations: 1962-1971

Any news on this project?

I tracked down the laserdisc - thanks for the pointers! I watched half last night, it was great to see the film without the missing bottom and right on my SE DVD, and got a couple of the extra lines. Out of all the laserdiscs I've seen the transfer on it is pretty good, although some of the colours seemed out - reds in particular were overly vibrant. This could of course could be partly due to my player (S315). Anyhow, still very eager to see this project finally released.

Are there any other unique James Bond laserdiscs asside from this, and the banned bond commentaries on Dr No, From Russia With Love, and Goldfinger?

Difference in quality of laserdisc players

Thanks very much for the reply!

It's a D925 I'm planning on tracking down, now I've decided to up my player model. How do you find the player, is the comb filter decent and and is it the one you use for doing your preservations?

I'm now wondering - what would be the best way to connect my LD player to the TV then..?

I watched part of Thunderball last night, and the transfer looked pretty great - compared with other LDs I've watched on it - so definately the tranfer is a massive factor, however there is a glut of visual noise coming form the player - even on the blue startup screen before the disc plays is horribly noisy.

Thanks again for getting back to me!

Hey there - thanks for the reply,
My player doesn't have a S-Video out - but it has a scart, which by all accounts will give a better output than S-vid. I read some of the better Pioneer players have a build in comb-filter, does that make much difference?

I'm wondering if my player has something wrong with the motor that it makes such a loud noise then... That's good to know if I got a better player that would at least be sorted.

Difference in quality of laserdisc players

Hey guys,
slightly off topic - but definately relevant to laserdisc preservation. I'm wondering, is there a big different between the output video quality of different laserdisc players? I know there's the X0 project, and it uses the best LD player money can buy - but for more mid/low end players is there a big difference between players? What players to people use and how do they compare to other players they've used?

I'm in the UK and have got a Pioneer S315:
http://www.laserdiscarchive.co.uk/laserdisc_archive/pioneer/pioneer_cld-s315/pioneer_cld-s315.htm

If I bought a 929 or a 515 would I see a big picture difference? I got my S315 cheap on ebay a few years ago and it does the job, but I don't think the picture quality is decent on the discs I have (but I don't know anyone else with a LD play to compare with) and the S315 is really, really loud when playing - this whirring is intense. I don't know if that's just something you have to deal with with LD players but it's detrimental to the enjoyment of watching the discs.

Thanks guys,
Andy

Info Wanted: Possible projects & extended versions
Time
Hey guys,
thanks for the info!

Yep, for some reason I thought there was more than 1 cut to the films made. There is however a cut made to one of the documentaries. Info taken from: http://www.dvdcompare.net

EP1:
R2 United Kingdom - (Fox) - No Movie Cuts - 13 seconds of cuts on the Making of Documentary to remove all sexual expletives to gain a "U" cert. A "15" cert. was available, but declined.

EP2:
R2 United Kingdom - (Fox) - Yes, 1 second to headbutt in order a get a PG rating.

Anyone interested in make a very short featurette about these 2 cuts made..? Would make a cool DVD extra for a larger project.

Info Wanted: Possible projects & extended versions
Time

Hey guys,
I post on the non-SW board, but think this is my first post here - so hello!

I’ve spent the last few nights watching through EP1-3 again, and checking out the deleted scenes and I’m wondering - has anyone done extended versions of these films with the scenes inserted back in? I’d love to see these if done, some of what they cut out is criminal.

I was looking through the suplimentary DVDs here and there’s a couple of documentaries I’d love to see being made, and I’m wondering if anyone is up for attempting them - or has done already.

The first is very short featurette dealing with the cuts the BBFC made to EP1-3 when released in the UK, having the UK version side to side with the US version. There were only 3 cuts so this would be very short (living in the UK I haven’t actually seen these scenes uncut - why I’d love to see this little feature)

The other is more abitious. I’ve seen before a site which shows screenshots of the difference between the original, 96 relrease and DVD release of the original trilogy - and I’m wondering if anyone’s thought about making an actual video doc showing these differences? I’d certainly find it fascinating to watch through and see all the changed Lucas has made.

Regardless - keep up the good work guys, I’ve seen some amazing stuff come from the posters here!

Pokemon: making the dub more like the original (Released)
Time
I was wondering - do you know where I could get copies of some of the banned/unreleased episodes with English subs? Namely:
Slowking's Day
The Legend of Dratini
Electric Soldier Porygon
The Ice Cave!
Shaking Island Battle! Dojoach VS Namazun!!
Ash and May! Heated Battles in Hoenn!!

Did anything ever come of the Japanese version of the first movie being preserved?

Thanks!

I sent fanfiltration a PM, but reckon I'll just ask here as well. I'm really hoping this project comes together - but I'm also thinking I'll track down the best version of the "international cut" on Laserdisc as well, since I've got a player. I'm wondering - which version is the best to get? Can anyone provide an image of the cover so I know which I'm after?

I'm also wondering, has anyone done a version of Never Say Never Again with better music added? The disc introduction and the lask of any backing music for the bulk of the film really kills it - a better audio might save the film.

Info: Trainspotting - extended video version
Time
Ah, was there a version where these had been added in, or the lot of clips preserved? I'd really love to see them - and ideally an extended cut of the film. I have a half memory of seeing the film when I was really young and Renton in the interview mentioning he went to Heriots school and was expelled, but I've never seen the clip since and as it's been so long I wonder if I'm imagining it and confusing it with information in the book.

Info: Trainspotting - extended video version
Time

hey guys, I just came across a section on IMDB which talks about an extended video version of Trainspotting that was recalled 2 days after release because a load of extra scenes had been added in. I’m wondering if anyone has ever tracked this down or a preservation project has been done? I’d love to see a longer cut of the film.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0117951/alternateversions

The original UK special edition box set video was withdrawn from sale after only two days, after Polygram discoverd that they had added more than the nine deleated scenes. In addition to the nine above scenes are:

  • Renton and Sick-boy setting up a rifle in the bushes of the park, whilst listening to the original avengers theme.
  • Renton laying on a stretcher in a hospital corridor, after a few moments someone tries to steal his blanket.
  • Renton’s parents wheel him out of hospital.
  • Begbie arriving at Renton’s london flat.
  • Begbie in Renton’s flat talking about horse racing.
  • More of Spud’s job interview.
  • Begbie, Spud, Sick-boy, Tommy and Renton arrive at a friend’s, with the things they stole from the American tourist (red jacket, passport etc.). You then see the friend dressed in the jacket, sunglasses and cap trying to draw £500 on the American’s credit card.
  • Sick-boy, Renton, Spud and Tommy on the train on their way to the countryside.
  • Renton dancing with his mother to culture club, at the club his parents go to.
  • Begbie, Sick-boy and Spud looting someone’s house. Sick-boy is wearing the skull mask from the cover of the book.
  • Renton and Spud steal a tv from an old people’s home. This is not edited together, but presented in 4 different takes, from three different camera angles.
  • Renton visits Swanney in hospital. Again this is not edited together, but presented in 11 different takes, from 5 different angles.
  • The deleted scene at the bus station begins with Renton giving a beggar some change; after Renton has moved on the beggar looks up and we see it is Swanney.

Is anyone in touch with Ridgeshark? Be great if he had time and was able to clean up the old clips - I'm sure he could work wonders cleaning up the dirt and damge on those guys, be great to have a copy of Within The Woods with cleaner picture and audio.

Sergio Leone Preservations - Dollars Trilogy, Fistful of Dynamite, Once Upon a Time in the West (Released)

Awesome stuff! I'm really lookign forward to checking these out. I forgot to mention, I've got the original mono vinyl releases of A fistful, the fistful/few dollars more split, and the good the bad and the ugly soundtracks. Not sure if anything on these would be desired as a bonus feature.
