I think that’s a good idea Faraday! The last time I watched it I did feel like it didn’t totally hold up, so potentially reworking it might turn out well!
I’m not sure which version you’d have heard last - the version in the workprint is really rough, and I’ve updated it with a simpler and shorter line since then. Either way, it can definitely be better.
Perhaps whomever suggests an idea could oversee the production. Essentially “do so and so a favor” month.
Glad this is being brought back! I definitely see some merit in going back through the Skywalker Saga with fresh eyes now that the Sequel Trilogy is done. I could see some slower months covering big picture stuff that is mostly discussion, where other months could be executing smaller ideas that could actually be used in edits. It might be a good idea to go back through old threads and see what were some common ideas that were never really made.
I think both of these just about nail it. I don’t want this to be ‘EddieDean’s project’ (hell, I’ve already got a huge project in the Clone Wars Refocused); I want it to belong to the community. We’ll start with movies, and those threads where I’ll do a lot of homework up front can be the backbone, but then we can spin off to focus on whatever ideas and projects the community want to collectively pick up.
Since there seems to be good interest, perhaps I’ll launch the first one soon. I think chronological order is a sensible approach for a few reasons, so Phantom Menace would be the first one.
As there have been no strong opinions on doing a ‘franchise overview’ first, perhaps we’ll just use this thread as the project index, franchise overview, and meta-commentary on how we conduct this collaboration, and it can just stay passively active in parallel as the central resource.

I’ve got more prep to do on the Phantom Menace OP, and I’ve not slept well as I had to chase my escaped trampoline down the street in a storm in the middle of the night, but unless anyone has anything specific to add regarding the approach I might just launch it when it’s ready. We can always revise the approach as we go.

I feel silly for taking so long to think of this, but it’s completely plausible to potentially give the “shuttle” line to Finn. I’ll have to search around and see if he ever says anything that might be usable.
I’m fine with the current Rose line as an edit for myself, but, if I want to make this as publicly professional as possible - and I do - then I want to keep trying to find other options. I think I’ve been subconsciously in a rush to get this out because it’s so close to being finished, but I’d rather slow down and make sure it’s up to proper quality standards.
Having it all laid out like that will be a fantastic resource, I reckon. It’s easy to only remember select bits of movies, or get so focused on individual moments that you miss the forest for the trees.
I think this is a great idea. I think one of the things that made the TROSA thread work was having someone to steer the ship and gently veto some ideas to keep us all pulling in the same direction; obviously, that’s harder to do when it’s a democratic community project than someone’s individual project that everyone wanted to chip into. But I think it’s possible, if the Senate votes to give the Chancellor (EddieDean) emergency powers; he can then approve the creation of an army without a vote (make captain’s calls when necessary, in response to what it looks like the community consensus is on the overall direction).
If you were gonna replace one line from a stormtrooper somewhere in the OT with something from Temeura Morrison, what would it be and what would be the source for the line?
Perhaps “there’s no one here” as they conclude searching the Falcon. I’m sure there’d at least be a rough equivalent to that line available.
Maybe “Blast 'em!” when chasing Luke et al on the Death Star; there’d definitely be something analogous for that.
Related idea: subtly replace the two stormtroopers talking in the background by the tractor beam controls with Dee Bradley Baker having a conversation with himself.
I did this quick edit just to see the gag but I think it’s too jokey. I’m on the fence whether to keep that single Jar Jar moment at all, in its proper place, but definitely cutting the first tongue shot. I go between not liking the antics and thinking a Gungan creature is not theoretically a bad idea that can work if toned down.

It could also go in one of the TROS Force visions, though I genuinely can’t remember now which of those are in the theatrical and which were added for Ascendant.

I think the concept is good but the execution needs work. One thing that I think is a dealbreaker is any shot that’s clearly a modern installation. It should not look like Earth architecture. There were also some explosions that weren’t properly chromakeys.
Yeah, I only did a very cursory job with the colour correction using the tools already in Premiere. I can always do a better job of them if I invest the time, but I wanted to get a proof-of-concept out. I also agree about the Earth architecture, but the explosion in that shot worked so well for my purposes that to me it was worth the trade off. Everyone’s mileage will vary, of course.
The only thing I’m not too keen on with that sequence is that Chernobyl shot (just because I could pinpoint where it was from right away and it just seemed jarring with the comp’d in floor).
Speaking of recognition though, I’ve seen a couple of people use the Krypton explosion for MOS for the Death Star. But wow… Yours is probably the best integration of that I’ve seen! It was seamless.
The comped-in floor needs work to make it more seamless; it’s the slightly mismatched movement that gives it away. And thank you! I’d never actually put this into a serious edit of ANH, but if I did, I think it would just be the Krypton explosion shot.
Wow, I like the sequence a lot. My initial reaction to watching the theatrical original is that u have this slight moment of u certainty because u don’t know if the proton torpedo would work and let alone save the rebel base in the Knick of time. Your sequence seems to portray this from tarkin’s pov. While he thinks victory was attained the viewer can appreciate for a few seconds it is quite the contrary.

How did u rotoscope the explosion starting at 0:18? Is it the same explosion that proceeds down another shaft several seconds later? And what program did you use? If im not mistaken, it looks like your explosion was manually drawn? I use Davinci resolve and for explosions, the Luma keyer works well for rotoscoping explosions in fusion page. For my low standards at least
I put this together in Premiere - all of the explosions are from their original source material.

I used footage from Star Trek Discovery for the photon torpedo falling down the shaft, the hangar bay floor exploding is from Chernobyl with a new floor rotoscoped in, the large space with all the orb structures exploding is from Battlefield Earth, the final explosion of the whole Death Star is from Man of Steel with the Death Star rotoscoped in, and all the remaining shots are from the 1996 Keanu Reeves action movie Chain Reaction. I just colour corrected some elements in some shots - the Battlefield Earth shots are originally highly saturated purple, and the shaft that you’re talking about was originally terracotta brown in Chain Reaction.
However, the fact that you assumed the effects were custom made hopefully indicates I’ve done a decent job at combining it all!
I might swap the shots of the orbs exploding and the explosion racing up the tunnel, I think that would flow slightly better.
After Alderaan is destroyed, the camera holds on the empty starfield. The opening banjo notes of Journey of the Sorcerer by Eagles begins to play. The camera tilts up to a large digital book moving through space. Stephen Fry’s voice starts to speak. The rest of the movie is just the entire 2005 film version of The Hitchhikers’ Guide to the Galaxy.
Have there ever been any attempts to replace the ANH Death Star explosion, to make it a little less of a “firecracker goes pop” affair and make it a bit larger and weightier?

The audio needs work, I need to tweak some of my lazy rotoscoping, and someone else should probably have a go at my colour correcting because I’m severely red-green colourblind.
I’ve decided not to do a V1 and V2, but since it’s so close to completion, just wait and release it once it’s done with all the changes I planned. The workprint is always available until then, although I have improved a lot of small things in it since then.
What about “The only family you have…” door opens “Is here.”
It could almost be really ominous if done right.

Back this time last year I was thinking about doing a bit of a community survey and maybe running “focus months” for idea generation and edit highlighting/comparison for specific movies, maybe it’s worth doing that now in a period of relative quiet?

Yeah, he did some very cool VFX work to remove the saber reflection from Kylo’s eyes. I’ll render a sample clip with my additional audio work tonight.
What if when Luke goes to visit Ben, Ben lights his lightsaber first? That could go a long way to fixing what people perceived as a betrayal of Luke’s character. Will it completely win over most of them? Probably not, but I think it could still help.
How exactly would that work? Ben was asleep during the whole lightsaber-igniting affair. If you’re planning to have him wake up, ignite his lightsaber, and then show Luke’s “briefest moment of pure instinct”, that just sounds unnecessarily elaborate.
My personal favorite solution to the whole “Luke almost killed his nephew” thing is DonKamillo’s approach: Cut to black after Luke says “Snoke had already turned his heart”, and then cut to Ben looking at Luke (with the saber glow in his eyes removed). That way, it seems like Kylo saw Luke standing over him in his sleep and assumed the worst, allowing the whole Rashomon flashback thing to be kept in without Luke’s murderous instincts.
A middle way that I personally like best is SparkySywer’s version, which I’m using in my own edit. Luke looks at a sleeping Kylo and senses the darkness, ignites his lightsaber, and immediately deactivates it - then looks over at Kylo again to realise that he was awake the whole time, and heard it. Because he doesn’t stand there holding an ignited saber, it really does feel like the briefest moment of acting on pure instinct, and immediately coming to his senses.
Valérian was one of the inspirations for Star Wars, so that would be things really coming full circle.
