Community Focus Thread 1: The Phantom Menace
Time

I keep thinking about Watto and the chance cube, and how to keep it in a “Qui-Gon frees Shmi” edit. As I figure it, there’s only two moments of dialogue that need to be altered.

When Watto says “red, the boy - blue, his mother,” change it to “red, them both - blue, neither.”

This follows on from “no pod is worth two slaves” and his lecherous “we’ll let fate decide,” and strengthens the following “your friend had better be careful or I’ll end up owning him too,” since (from Watto’s perspective) Qui-Gon now gambled on a whim with very disadvantageous odds.

I wonder if there’s anything in AOTC that might be usable?

TLJ has a very warm and very soft light appearance. Which I personally like, but I still completely agree that the film is visually too dark for the same reasons you’ve pointed out. My own suggestion is that the new grade ups the contrast too much - it’s making the bright parts stand out even more from the scenery, while also washing out the lighting gradient on people’s faces like they’re standing under fluro tubes. In my opinion, the lighter areas don’t really need to get much lighter at all, it’s just the mids that need to be brightened a bit. You’ll also be fighting against the theatrical lighting by going for a blue tint, which isn’t to say that you shouldn’t do it (it would certainly be an interesting change), but it’ll be a lot more difficult.

I feel like that sounds overly negative, which isn’t my intention; I always like seeing your colour grading process.

Mando EP3: A New Path (A Book of Boba Fett Edit) [RELEASED]
Time

Boba spells out his motivation when he’s talking to Fennec - he’s sick of being a bounty hunter working for gang bosses who make stupid decisions based on short-term thinking that gets people killed and causes problems, and he thinks someone with his experience could do it better. The show is him finding out that he’s bitten off slightly more than he can chew and it’s a harder job than he thought.

I suspect Burbin is right. The existing crawl serves this film, and changing it too much feels contrived to suit other ancillary material.

Nevertheless, here’s another…

The First Order reigns. Having [removed all the peaceful Republic’s defenses], Supreme Leader Snoke gathers his remaining forces to seize control of the galaxy’s central solar systems.

Only General Leia Organa’s band of Resistance fighters stand against the rising tyranny, certain that Jedi Master Luke Skywalker will return and restore a spark of hope to the fight.

But the Resistance has been exposed. As the First Order speeds toward the rebel base, the brave heroes mount a desperate escape…

(I also changed it to “star systems”, since that’s what they call them in the SW movies, and “solar system” refers specifically to the star Sol.)

Chaos engulfs the galaxy! Having decimated the New Republic’s capital and military, Supreme Leader Snoke presses his advantage to seize control of the galaxy’s central star systems.

In the wake of this disaster, General Leia Organa’s RESISTANCE fears that only the return of Jedi Master Luke Skywalker can restore a spark of hope to the fight.

I think that’s a good read on background subtext that’s already there - at least it’s what I inferred from watching the theatricals. I agree that TLJ is the weak link in the chain in this regard, however, I don’t think any of the actual events onscreen are the issue - it’s the crawl, which (I think accidentally) implies they’ve bum-rushed everywhere at once and overwhelmed the Galaxy (despite the fact that we can see the core of their remaining forces, which are chasing down a small handful of ships that keep outrunning them). I always interpreted the First Order as a military junta, so I changed the first paragraph of the crawl to spell it out:

The FIRST ORDER reigns. The New Republic has been decimated, and in this state of galactic confusion, Supreme Leader Snoke’s armies have seized key territories and taken military control of the galaxy.
