Mustafar:

Captain Hux:

Puppets: Is the “clunk” sound effect of the puppets going to be added back in? I liked it. Either way, this footage blows my mind every time I see it.

Mustafar: The shot is good, but I honestly kind of prefer the one we currently have. It’s a lot more dynamic; the one from Biomes is intentionally a lot more slow and static and I feel like it doesn’t match the energy of the shots around it the way the current one does.

Captain Hux: This is absolutely flawless. I’m listening for the edit and it still sounds like actual theatrical audio.

Yeah, I could try that. I didn’t want the AT-AT to do too much, because I didn’t want people’s eyes to be drawn to it and not at the Luke puppet, but a little more movement probably wouldn’t hurt.

Maybe give Luke a bit more animation up and down aswell? My eye is naturally drawn to the AT-AT anyway. The design is magnificent.

If the hand is an issue could you play the close up source backwards? I could try to roto it if you feel it’s an issue.

I agree with moving Luke a bit more because the AT-AT draws the eye in frame more. (Also, thank you for the kind words, MR!) I didn’t even notice the hand, personally.

RL, this shot is just incredible.

Could someone send me the scene of the Jedi voices speaking to Rey? Even a streamable link is fine. I just want to send it to Ross (the actor who played Sors) so he can match his performance style.

Hey Cap, let me know if this won’t work for whatever reason: https://streamable.com/08cxe3

Absolutely perfect, thank you!

Wow I am blown away by the new puppet shot, that is truly fantastic work!

I had to go back and watch the original scene in the movie to remember what was replaced there and I saw a way to potentially extend that scene and tie it into the ending even more.

I was thinking something like this:

  • Rey stumbles upon the puppet show with Luke facing down the walker
  • She’s approached by Nambi Ghima and asked what her family name is
  • Rey admits she doesn’t have one and then hears the puppeteer say “Skywalker”
  • Cut to puppet Luke facing off with Kylo (as suggested by Sherlock)
  • Rey senses his presence and runs off to ForceTime™ with him

So basically hold off the Skywalker name drop until it would be most impactful. But I don’t know how viable this would be to pull off, you’d need some reaction shots of Rey. Her original reaction to sensing Kylo would work perfectly for hearing “Skywalker” but then going from that to her running off would need some kind of padding.

But anyway, all the props to RogueLeader, Faraday and everyone else that worked on the puppet shot!

Thank you! This is actually a really neat idea. I’d be up for making a Kylo puppet design if RL wants to try putting this together.

It’s so weird and wild seeing my puppet designs actually fabricated, put into motion, and put into the movie. I feel like I got to do the fun bit and RL did the hard work. I’m absolutely floored by the result, and I’m very proud to be part of it all.

I’m glad you’re happy with how it turned out! Honestly, your enthusiastic message offering to help with the puppets is what really gave me the push to do this. I would’ve been stuck on the puppet designs forever if wasn’t for you!

I’m really glad to have helped!

I’ll add my voice to the crowd saying it would be great to extend the shot.

Someone mentioned adding a Kylo Ren moment; I personally feel like “human figure and AT-AT” is easier to instantly understand what you’re looking at than “two human figures fighting,” even with Kylo’s mask and a possible voiceover. However, if adding it is the consensus, I can design a Kylo puppet in the same style. At the very least we’d then have the option.

Hehe. Unfortunately (for fanediting purposes), I am currently adjusting to becoming a for real poppa.

I basically have just enough time to follow along reading this thread between efforts to coax the newborn to sleep.

Congratulations! It’s an amazing feeling, but yes, a time consuming one lol. All of my fanediting since joining this forum has been done while bouncing a baby on my knee, but at least she’s always an appreciative audience.

Here’s the current dialogue of the Jedi Voices. I hadn’t realised there’s actually a very nice trajectory and build up over the course of the dialogue; it’s not just random snippets of generic encouragement. I’ve tried to keep that same flow, and added my own suggested lines in bold:

OBI-WAN: These are your final steps, Rey. Rise and take them.

ANAKIN: Rey.

AHSOKA: Rey.

KANAN: Rey.

ANAKIN: Bring back the balance, Rey, as I did.

LUMINARA: In the night, find the light, Rey.

MACE: You’re not alone, Rey.

YODA: Alone, never have you been.

QUI-GON: Every Jedi who ever lived lives in you.

SORS: We are all one through the Force, Rey.

ANAKIN: The Force surrounds you, Rey.

AAYLA: Let it guide you.

AHSOKA: As it guided us.

MACE: Feel the Force flowing through you, Rey.

ANAKIN: Let it lift you.

SORS: As it carries us.

ADI: Rise, Rey.

QUI-GON: We stand behind you, Rey.

OBI-WAN: Rey.

YODA: Rise in the Force.

KANAN: In the heart of a Jedi lies her strength.

OBI-WAN: Rise.

QUI-GON: Rise.

LUKE: Rey, the Force will be with you.

LEIA: Always.

“There are many of us.”

Too bad his character was axed from my edit of Episode 3! But this is a pretty cool inclusion, so I am glad he offered!

Something about there being “many of us” might strike a good balance. It’s been a while since I watched the Jedi voices scene; do any of them mention Rey “not being alone” or words to that effect?

I’ve got a cool announcement to make. I happen to know the actor who played Sors Bandeam in Revenge of the Sith, and I asked if he would like to reprise the role in this edit, and he agreed!

I messaged Hal about it and we agreed it would be cool to add him to the Jedi voices speaking to Rey. I thought I’d open it up to everyone to decide what he says.

While yes, it would be funny to have him say some variation on his iconic ROTS line, I’d rather not. This is a serious scene in TROS and I don’t want to detract from that; plus, we have a chance to write a whole new resolution for a character that’s become a meme and a joke, with the original actor from the movie - how often do you get that chance?

Solid ideas, RogueLeader. Regarding Rey and the “choice” Kylo gives her, I’d like to be able to emphasize that Kylo thinks the only way they’ll be strong enough to defeat Palpatine is if Rey goes to the Dark Side, just as he did. (“The Dark Side is more powerful!” and whatnot.) Subtextually, this would also be Kylo’s way of validating the choices he’s made this entire trilogy. (“If Rey joins me, and we defeat Palpatine, it will prove that I was right to go down this dark path.”)

So basically, you’d have Rey, who wants to kill Palpatine as a Jedi, but is constantly struggling to avoid slipping into the Dark Side throughout the film. You’d have Kylo, who also wants to defeat Palpatine, but wants to do it through the Dark Side. And you’d have Palpatine, who wants Rey to kill him using the Dark Side, so that she’ll be deep enough into the Dark Side that he can possess her and complete his resurrection.

The Quarters fight could be about Kylo saying “You need to accept it, Rey. This is the only way you’ll be strong enough to face Palpatine. Give in to the Dark Side.” “No!” (This would also, theoretically, come right after Rey’s Dark Side Dagger Vision, if that concept is still in the cards; so the whole scene would sort of revolve around this idea of Rey succumbing, rather than “This is the knife that killed your parents! Ain’t that kooky?”)

Structurally, Finn serves as the angel on Rey’s shoulder, trying to convince her of her goodness (“That doesn’t sound like you. Rey, I know you…”). Kylo is the devil, telling her that she has to submit in order to defeat Palpatine. But when he offers her his hand, she steps back, because she wants to believe that she can still save the day as a Jedi, and not as a Sith. (“I did want to take your hand. Ben’s hand.”) It’s not a clash of goals, but of means and ideologies.

When Kylo destroys the McGuffin in the Death Star, she’s not just mad because he’s made her whole quest pointless. She’s mad because the only way she can possibly get to Exegol now is by joining Kylo on the Dark Side. That doohickey was her only chance of finding Exegol on her own, as a Jedi. And Kylo’s destroyed that chance. You bastard, I’m gonna flippin’ murder you…

Kylo is also torn between the Light, represented by Leia, and the Dark, represented by Palpatine. Maybe Palpatine doesn’t want to possess Kylo because Leia’s influence is still too strong in him or something? (“I sense conflict in you still. You must prove yourself worthy of my Fleet.”)

Thus, Rey’s character arc in the film would supplement Kylo’s, and vice versa. They’d feed into each other and enhance each thematically.

I don’t know if any of this makes sense. My brain is kind of fried from working with the same few audio clips all night haha.

God, it’s frustrating how close this movie was to being good.

Maybe her saying “No…” (shot of her catching the lightsaber) “I am a Jedi!”

It sounds good in theory, but shuffling the words around even more more risks throwing the lip sync more and more out of whack. Maybe it will look okay? I’ll work on it.

There’s also the problem of getting a clear sound bite with the proper tone and inflection - which is the main problem I’m having with finding a good alternate source for “a [Jedi].” There’s gotta be something out there though, right?

Another potential source for words: press interviews with Daisy Ridley.

Has anyone tried making an Audio-Only edit? I dunno about anyone else, but I sometimes listen to Star Wars movies with audio description when I’m doing chores and stuff, and it feels like editing that could bridge the gap between rewrites and fanedits. We couldn’t write new dialogue, but we could move it around more easily. And scenes that people have said they wanted to see - like a kiss between Finn and Poe, or Rey showing up to rescue the kids on Canto Bight - could be narrated into existence.

This is a really exciting idea.

I’m fully on board with Ren’s “We can stop him”, Rey’s “I’m a Jedi” and shifting Palpatine’s “I’m all the Sith” to earlier.

I agree too. I still think we can get better sources of Rey saying “I… am a Jedi” though.

Also, lemme just point out, everyone here has collectively taken probably the stupidest exchange in the whole movie, and turned it into something thematically resonant that makes sense. We might still be ironing out the final few nudges, but damn, this community is something for everyone involved to be proud of.

Wow, Sherlock, that really works pretty damn well! I read about it and the discussion before being able to actually plug in earphones and listen to it.

But you know how this stuff always goes: it needs some improvement yet. I think Rey’s “[and] I” sounded just a little abrupt. Is there another instance of her starting a sentence with “I” in a similar voice that could be blended into it?
Her “I am a Jedi” seemed just a little quick. Could it be stretched out a little bit more?

And once we get it sounding flawless, I’d appreciate getting the individual single-channel stems for the dialogue changes. I don’t think I could resist trying to fold them in and sculpt the audio myself too on the off chance I could improve it or at least make it truly ‘native’ to the rest of the timeline.

This is an exciting change, but one that I would really only use if it was totally flawless. Which it is surprisingly close to being!

Surely she says the four individual words in the sentence “I am a Jedi” frequently enough that there’d be usable versions somewhere in TFA and TLJ.

Alright, this may be stupid, but something is still nagging me about “We’ll kill him together.” It’s a tiny nag, admittedly - I think it’s because “We WILL kill him” comes across less like Kylo is imploring her to help him end the Sith, and more like, “Oh boy, here we go killing again!” It’s like Kylo cares more about killing this guy than he does about stopping the Sith. Maybe it’s just the way Adam Driver delivers the line? (Emphasis on “Kill” instead of “We’ll”?) I know, I know, it’s a subtle connotative difference; but it’s gnawing at me.

Plus, “We WILL do this” doesn’t really leave open any other choices for Rey, which - to me - deflates the tension of the moment considerably. “Of course Kylo’s wrong. She’s not going to start murdering people with him!” Rather than, “Oh gosh, Kylo has a point. What’s Rey going to do?”

So I made a quick mockup. Is it worth trying to iron out the new line? https://streamable.com/4tms6i

(Between this, “Become a Dyad,” and the eventual Rey Nobody replacement, we’re just going to change all of Kylo’s dialogue in this scene, aren’t we? Lol.)

EDIT: I also did a bit more work on this thingy: https://streamable.com/ffimpr

Blended out Palp’s Theme (I hope) a little bit better, cleaned up the word “a”, added a clip of Rey panting to cover up the omission of “and,” and also trimmed down the dramatic pause before she finishes her line (to help fudge the lip sync). Any better?

I personally have no real issue with Kylo’s original line, but the editing on your new version is extremely good. If I’d never seen that scene before I’d never guess it had been altered.

Personally I think the issue is with the audio we have to work with. This edit is as smooth as it could possibly get, but the line read still sounds mumbled and rushed - an unavoidable artifact of how Daisy Ridley delivers the original line. I think this change works brilliantly in theory, but I can’t think of any other solution than dubbing in a soundalike.

I know there’s a lot of AI things out there which replicate people’s voices reading funny things (eg Alec Guinness reading the Darth Plagueis copypasta), surely it would be possible to get a Daisy Ridley one to say four words.
