I love referring to this thing as the Emperor’s “house” and will call it that from now on.

Hal: I’m finally finished with TROS:A!
TikTok: (C-3PO voice thing)
Hal:
Like anything, it’s probably doing the rounds as each wave of new people stumble across it. I’d never seen it before now, but then, I’ve never watched the special features of TLJ on Bluray.
The theatrical feels like a joke because of context. The music builds up then goes silent, with a silly “whoosh” sound effect, then Rey boggles at it like she’s Ernest. Hal’s edit shows that just by having the music continue unbroken with a subtle and organic sound effect, it works fine - and just goes to show what a damn fine actor Mark Hamill is, in my opinion.
That said, I’m still very interested in the new clip, if for no other reason than it’s something new to mess with in TLJ, which I thought had been exhausted after four years.
Book of Boba Fett spoilers:
Dub Patton Oswalt’s filibuster from Parks and Rec over Boba Fett escaping from the Sarlacc Pit.
I’d like to experiment with it, but I don’t know how to download videos from reddit.
I think it might raise more questions than it answers, yeah. Plus, I like that he shows his skills in a very genuine way by hacking out of the cell; it’s a nice character beat to realise that he’s been thrown in a cell (for presumably cheating at gambling) and decided it’s as good of a place as any to get some sleep undisturbed.
It’s a neat idea, but if DJ had that sort of pull, why would be be in a cell that he needs to break out of?
The current hold up on the plomme bloom VFX is actually me, not my friend who’s doing it - he needs me to send him some 4K files and I haven’t had the opportunity to sit down and sort it out.
Awesome document! It’s way less dialogue edits than I thought it would be.
For the last one, I had an idea, but your mileage may vary on how it would alter the scene in a practical editing sense. Have Palpatine say, “But the only family you have here…” and then he opens the roof to show all the Resistance losing the battle. He later refers to them as her family too, unless I’m misremembering it, so it would lean into the “found family” theme of the movie to make the villain derisive towards it.
Hey jonh! What a pleasant surprise. Does anyone remember that scene in Superhero Movie (spoof of Spider-Man) where a bunch of different animals start humping the hero?

I’m losing my shit at this whole exchange.
This project has been on my mind lately. What I’ve decided to do is create a V1 that I’d be happy with even if a V2 never materialises. So, I’m going to watch through the workprint and note where it works and where it doesn’t work, and patch over the latter with Hal’s Legendary edit (which I used as a base, and is my current go-to version to watch). I do think there’s gold in the hills, but I’ve dug up a bunch of rocks with it in my overzealousness.
(For the record, I do still want to get the “Master Codebreaker was always DJ” change to work eventually; that would be my aim with a V2.)
I finally sat and watched V2 with my wife, who saw the theatrical release on its premiere, hated it, and never watched it again. Her comments:
“What you guys did was incredible. Given what you had to work with, you took a plotless mess and made it into something that made sense. All of your additions in the third act were so good, especially the ending - having Ben as a Force Ghost and the better line delivery makes the ending actually work, and I never thought I’d say that about “Rey Skywalker.” As an ending to all nine films in the saga, it gets it right now and I like it.”
She also commented on the colour grading, in particular the scene on Ahch-To, which she said looks beautiful now. She didn’t know which parts I’d worked on, and she even said while watching it “Oh that’s so much better!” at the puppet show and the “I am a Jedi” line. She didn’t even realise the Knights of Ren, the purple saber, or the fleet comms chatter were edits until I told her afterwards.
For me personally, it’s gone from the theatrical release being the only Star Wars movie I actively dislike to being a movie I actually really like. I even feel okay with Rey Palpatine; the way it’s been carefully massaged into better shape is emblematic of how literally everything is quietly improved throughout.
It’s kind of staggering what a good job this whole community has done, and Hal in particular for steering the ship and doing all the convoluted back-end editing to bring it all to life. It’s like a completely different movie.
Rotoscope a pie over Poe Dameron’s head, to bring the ST more in line with Hal’s typo.
Just wanted to wish everyone here a very happy holidays!
And…if the edit will be re-rendered anyway, might I suggest one final tweak to the finale in the spirit of the season?

This is a work of art.
That could definitely be an issue inherited from my handiwork, in which case, my apologies. I listened to it with headphones and without before sending it to Hal and I didn’t notice any issue, however, my hearing isn’t particularly fantastic so it’s possible that it just slipped me by.
Edit: I just thought to point out - the volume levels vary on the Jedi voices in the theatrical version; some of them are very faint to begin with. Is it possible that’s all it is, but were expecting them to be all regular dialogue levels? (I haven’t watched TROSAV2 yet for the record; I’m saving it until I have a day next week when I can watch it uninterrupted.)
So, I’m going to get real sappy here real quick, but…
As someone who has followed this thread for a while (and in the grand scheme of things, joined in on the fun fairly recently), I just want to say how proud I am of Hal and the rest of you guys for creating this wonder of a fan edit and doing the impossible in a lot of ways in making this film a much better experience. That in itself is the true power of fan editing: taking a film that is broken or misaligned or just an absolute mess and making it whole again through the power of determination, skill and (above all else) love.
Anyways, if this was a bar, I would buy you all a round of drinks for a job well done (barring anyone who’s underage IRL of course). But, yeah… Well done everybody!
Absolutely seconded. I usually think of fanedits as “alternative” versions of movies, rather than “fixed” versions, but this is definitely a fixed version and everyone’s rallied together as a community to make it happen. Star Wars fans get a bad rap, often for a good reason, but there’s a flipside to it, and that’s places like this. Positivity and hard work, people brought together by mutual creativity.
Krausfadr has volunteered to do just that.
I can do it as well, I have plenty of Drive storage.
I think EBSynth would be more appropriate for the eyes thing.
Luke and Leia look like CGI because of the compositing; they end up with a “floating head” effect. Billie Lourd did provide the physical performance onto which the Leia footage was pasted, though.
Is there seriously only one thing left until the final cut is locked off?? 😮
I’m interested to see how some of your changes play out - I like the theatrical cut a lot more than you do, but I agree, it’s a movie with some notable issues. I’ll wait until there’s a V1 though, cos as much as I’d like to watch the workprint, my time is completely dominated by Real Life Again for the next month or so.
Loving that poster, CaptainFaraday. The ‘Less Talking! More Fighting! More Monsters!’ text and font just looks brilliant! 😃
Thanks! I don’t remember the name of the font off the top of my head, but I used it on my Godzilla Vs Megalon edit poster and thought it worked so well that I’m using it for all my future Godzilla edits.
