Info Wanted: versions of Metropolis?
Time
Yeah, that was one of the pages I referenced. There's lots of contradictory info on that site. The chart at the bottom indicates that the projection speeds invariably faster than camera speeds up to 24fps. Also, there are tons of comments that mention that some films are ruined by showing them at the slower speeds. Oh well. If there was a definitive answer there would be no arguments. In this case, it really is up to the presentation end.

Giorgio Moroder's Metropolis (Released)

I was researching the film speed question in the other thread and came across info that the Kino NTSC is actually a conversion of the PAL version rather than directly from the digital restoration "print". So, I've ordered a PAL version off Ebay from the UK. I'm going to convert to NTSC, but this way I can work with 25->24 rather than 29.97 and the artifacts of the original conversion or IVTC.

Everything I've ever read about silent films indicates that they were never projected at the same rate as they were filmed and that it's a modern convention that they be projected at a natural rate. There was never a standard speed, that much we do know. How it was presented was pretty much up to the projectionist. It seems that they were more interested in the picture ending on time than any sort of natural look. Also, the cue sheets tend to recommend the faster rates. None of them recommend the slowest 16 speed, since the film was too flamable for that. Audiences at the time were accustomed to the slightly stylized look of the projection, which looks silly to us, just as the acting does.

Oh well, this is an ongoing debate among the professionals and aficionados. We won't solve it here.

Ok, my first impulse is to replicate the Moroder version exactly. Once I get that done, I'll consider doing a longer version with more of the restored scenes. I've acquired some early Moroder CDs with electronic music that seems quite suitable for filler. I'd prefer to keep it totally Moroder music. The soundtrack album also has longer cuts of the songs, which will help for scene extensions. I'll have to check out some of his other soundtrack albums to see if there's anything suitable. I don't think the full 2 hour cut with Moroder music would work, though.

***//BUILDING EMPIRE\\: PAL & NTSC DVD - NEW EDITION NOW ONLINE! ***

It's going well so far. I've begun in earnest. I have the original completely converted and the menu VOB deconstructed. It's all been fed into Encore and now I just have to author it. The menus are quite intricate but I should be able to redo what Jambe has done. Basically, it's matching up which transition goes with which menu.

A quarter of the film is irretrievably lost. The Kino restoration is about as complete as is possible. Other than whatever that Australian shot is, they DID cull all prints from around the world and restored them to as complete as you'll ever see.

As far as Moroder, there's a guy on Ebay claiming it was released in Greece on DVD, but he's selling copies of the out of print original.

I agree that it was much better in the first two seasons before it became a sitcom, and the '50s elements were all but removed, and it became the Fonzie show. And, yeah, the Mork episode was written as a dream. Correct me if I'm wrong, though, but there is a scene at the end where the Mork character returns and talks to his leader, proving it isn't a dream. I think that scene might have been added after Mork and Mindy was picked up. Nevertheless, there is an episode where Mork returns, and there is no effort to try to make anybody think it's a dream.

Yeah, but by then Mork was on his own show and had been established as real. They didn't need to make him be a dream. The extra scene on the first episode was indeed filmed later for the reruns.

Speaking of Mork and Mindy, I remember loving it at the time and then not liking it. Researching the show, I had forgotten it was pretty much over by the second season. It crashed and burned as quickly as Welcome Back Kotter, and Chico and the Man. They changed supporting characters, added gimmicks, moved its timeslot. The final desperation move with bringing in Jonathon Winters in the 4th season. Ugh.

Just a random note: While there are folks that argue the film should be viewed at about 18 fps (roughly the speed at which it was filmed), there is written evidence that it was always meant to be shown at around 24 fps (what was sometimes referred to as "sound speed").

Well, despite any written stuff, it's always a matter of looking at the film for what seems like natural speed. The rule of thumb for a late 1920s silent is usually 20-22fps. I'm fairly sure that 20fps works the best on the restored version.

I respectfully disagree. Considering that this whole forum is based upon the premise that a certain 30 year old movie should be preserved and viewed as it was in 1977 and not with modern tweaks, I'd think some consideration should be given to how silent films were presented back in silent days. It was actually the custom to watch films slightly sped up as they were more stylized and fantasized that way, which may seem odd to modern eyes. There's no evidence that ANY silent film was ever presented at a "natural" speed and there are 1000s of preserved music cue sheets that suggest projection speeds faster than filming speeds.

First season of Happy Days was great when it was on film with a single camera. The characters were real and the emotion honest. We find out Mrs. Cunningham was a racist, Fonzie was going to spend Christmas alone eating Beefaroni from a can, etc. When they went to the three-camera (I don't think it was video, but it might as well have been) set-bound typical sitcom style, THAT was when it jumped the shark. Fonzie became supernatural and the show really went downhill.

Reveiw of 12-inch LD from DVDLaser.com: With apparent deliberateness, there is a heavy overcast throughout the shoot, obscuring the peaks of the surrounding mountains and maintaining, to some degree, the atmosphere evoked by Angelo Badalamenti's music.

That's funny. In other words, they went there any day of the year. I was in Seattle for 2 months in 2002 and with my trusty GPS, I tracked down all the locations one day. It was ALWAYS overcast. If it rained 2 minutes or 20 hours, it rained EVERY day. Still, it was some of the most beautiful country I have ever seen. I'm still drinking coffee from my mug I bought at the Double RR Diner (Tweedes).

If nobody's going through with a new transfer, I have a DVD of it with soem music videos and other trivia as bonus features. The transfer itself is pretty spiffy. I'd be willing to PiF it to a few people in a couple weeks.

Still stands.

I will take you up on that soon. This is going to be my major holiday project. I'm off the last two weeks of the year. I have the laserdisc (although I'll have to capture the sound analog-I dropped my LD player that had digital out years ago), the soundtrack CD, and the Kino. I'll wait until I have the project done, or started in earnest, before acquiring extras.

My NTSC Building Empire is going well. When that's finished, I'll start on this one.

Depends. Go into the Nero folder and see if you have NeroVision. I can't remember if it was bundled with 6. There is no One Button approach. We're talking reauthoring a DVD from scratch, but if you have NeroVision, it's fairly easy.

The other program you'll need is DVDDecrypter, to rip the DVD in file mode. You can go to Videohelp.com and there's a button on the left for tools. Search for it there and you'll find a link.
