Why wasn't Hamill on the commentary? (2004 DVD)
Time
i'VE ONLY HEARD THE COMMENTARY ON A NEW HOPE, AND cARRIE FISHER WAS THE MOST INTERESTING THING ON IT, EXCEPT SHE DIDN'T GET MUCH OF A CHANCE TO SAY ANYTHING, i WOULD HAVE LOVED TO HAVE HEARD MORE ANECDOTES ABOUT WHAT HAPPENED ON THE SET, AND LESS OF THE EFFECTS TALK, BEN BURT RAMBLING ON ABOUT HOW HE FOUND THE PERFECT LASER BLAST SOUND BY TWANGING ON HIGH TENSION WIRES IN THE MOJAVE DESERT.

Yeah, I get what you're saying. I guess since I read the book, I knew who he was and didn't really need the scene. My problem was that Luke barely mentions him at the start of the film("That's what you said when Biggs and Tank left."). So I imagined that most people would forget that line. Now suddenly there's this guy being all buddy buddy with Luke, and we're grasping for straws trying to figure out who he is. The scene is still the best addition in 97, being as it's the only thing that added any real value to the film. Did Lucas every give any explanation to it being cut?

In the commentary on the 2004 New Hope , Lucas says he cut out all the early footage of Luke in Anchorhead with his friends, because he never really liked it and he wanted to focus on telling the story through the droids eyes and not Luke's, although I do like the inclusion of the Biggs Yavin scene if only for the fact that it ties in with the novel and radio-drama, and it does lend weight to luke's reaction when he dies.

PSYCHO_DAYV'S SW TRILOGY DVD SET REVIEW
Time
while I admit the new Jabba is a vast improvement on the 97 version (he still doesn't look anything like ROTJ ), the thing that really bugged me was way the Han never makes correct eye contact with Jabba, he always appears to be talking to Jabba's shoulder, I don't remember it being such an issue in the 97 version, but I must admit to really liking the work they did on the Dianoga (trash compactor monster) it fits in a lot better with the scene now, after watching a New Hope tonight with the commentary, it was a real dissapointment that Carrie's input was cut back to almost nothing, as she was the only one who had any amusing anecdotes about the making of the movies.

If you look at the original trilogy ,although Lucas was the main driving force behind the movie he was surrounded by a whole lot of really talented people who each helped guide the films to success, Lucas sought feedback from his peers Spielberg, Coppola, Depalma as well as the Gary kurtz's , Laurence Kasdan's etc. they were truly a collaborative effort, compared the the prequals where Lucas surrounded himself with a team of yes-men that were so excited to be working on a Star Wars film that they never challenged any of his lame-ass ideas.

The OOT on DVD - then what?
Time
The original Trilogy, in it's original theatrical cut, are up there with the classic movies of all time, and as such should be made available in whatever format becomes available and dominant in the future if only to preserve the film for future generations, of course there will come a point in the not too distant future where the quality of the format will actually be equal to or surpass the best quality presentation possible, in that case the quality will not advance but the film should still be released on each successive format and made available to the consumer, providing the demand exists. It's up to the consumer on how they choose to keep up with new advances in technology. Where I draw the line is at the multiple releasing of the same title on the one format with only slight variations.

Considering how George has always been so strict with how his films are presented theatrically, making sure that the films are presented with the best quality picture and sound, It's a shame that if you want to see his finest work the best you can do is watch a 9 year old video-cassette or Laser disc ( or a bootleg DVD-R of a laser-disc...... but that of course would be illegal mmmmm.)
and seeing as laser-disc has gone the way of the dodo, and VHS is in it's dying days, there aren't too many options left open to the fans and loyal audience who made the films a hit in the first place.

as far as I am concerned as long as the first (deifnitive) version of the film is available in the most up to date format, George can keep tinkering (spoiling) with it to his hearts content with Special editions, it's up to me where I draw the line in terms of keeping up with each rehash.

An article of lies and disgust - George Lucas talks re the 2004 OT SE DVD release...
Time
this is ridiculous, these movies stood 'half finished' for over twenty years, they won awards, set box office records, made millions of dollars for Lucas and Fox, spawned countless copycats and created a Legacy that inspired a whole generation of film-goers, Yet somehow Mr Lucas is embarrassed by them?

Closer to the truth I think George is reacting to the negative feedback that his prequals have had, considering that these films are supposedly the exact way he wants them to be, his vision , under his total control and without the technical or budget constraints he had the first time around, He's pissed off and probably embarrassed that the public haven't accepted his latest ultimate creation with as much passion as they did for his earlier work (which he didn't as much control over) and the fact he has been knocked off this pedestal as the genius behind the original star wars trilogy, his best work 25 years behind him.

So he's decided to turn on the public who made him who he is "If they don't like my new films, then I'm not going to give them my old fims, which they hold so dearly!" "screw you guys , I'm taking my ball and going home!"

To be fair, "remastering" is not about the new footage. It's about taking each film, in its entirety, scanning each frame, cleaning up the damage done by the years, and creating a high definition digital master. It is expensive, and labour intensive. And, seriosuly, if you think the measure of a mans' life is how many rabid fanboys are at his funeral, you seriously need to rethink your priorities

I'm sure any cost incurred in restoring and remastering the original films would be more than adequately recouped if the original cuts were released, it's not like George would be doing all the work.

does this mean we can now throw rocks at him?

I have a good feeling about this
Time
I agree with you, although I'm no technical expert on filmaking, you would think that it would be better to start with the the original source of the film (in it's purest form) before they added any of the special addition changes over the top of it. so it would make sense that Lowry actually restored the original version cut of the film, even if only for archival purposes .

Good things to say about the PT!!
Time
I always thought Darth Maul was just a good opportunity to create a kick ass villian, that was wasted. apart from the 'cool' fight at the end of the film Maul does nothing and adds nothing to the story of the film, he gets about 3 really lame lines in the film, and even they were dubbed. Maul may have looked scary and menacing, but it's all look and no substance, he should have inflicted a lot more damage in order to be a truly credible villain,

How much more powerful would the first film have been if Maul had been able to track Padme down to Anakin's Hovel and waited in ambush upon their return from the Pod-race, if he'd interrogated Schmi and killed her, it would have paralelled Luke's departure from tatooine in A new Hope and made Anakin's leaving Tatooine a lot more beleivable, instead of the half-assed way they killed off Schmi in the second film, They could have had Maul intimidating the Neimodians, maybe a 'force choke' or two on a few Naboo officials or Neimodians.

When I was seven Darth Vader frightened the crap out of me, I bet the only reaction Darth Maul could inspire in a seven year old would be 'He looks COOL!!!'

PG-13 Revenge of the Sith

I can't say a PG 13 rating bodes well for this movie. I was always hoping that eventualy the PT would capture the magic of the original, but more violence and a PG 13 rating seem to indicate otherwise. Becides aren't these movies supposed to be for kids as well? A movie rated PG 13 is not for kids.

I doubt that a pg-13 rating is going to harm the films box office, considering the damage that dumbing it down for the kids did to Phantom Menace and to the second film, it's about time that George gave the audience that have been with the films from the beginning, a fitting finale.
